The Calm Before the Storm

March 12, 2023 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Late today because of the time change.

The puzzle I’ve been working on is one I took at stab at about 3 years ago. Back then, I started with the borders, as I usually do, and I just couldn’t get them to work. There were a few missing pieces and a couple that didn’t fit anywhere. So I gave up and put it in the closet.

This time, I started from the middle of the puzzle and did the two side borders last.

Same problem.

I’m glad I started with the flowers this time because, at the very least, I was able to see the finished piece. It really is lovely. But I can’t donate this one because it doesn’t have all the pieces.

On to the Renoir puzzle, which is in the ‘find the outside edge pieces’ stage.

Well, my friends, we are going to get walloped by a nor’easter tomorrow and Tuesday. The forecast has fluctuated over the past 36 hours, but it’s starting to look like we’ll get at least 8 -12 inches of heavy, wet snow. There will be high winds. It will be quite dangerous out there.

I pray for the safety of everyone in the path of this storm, for the safety of trees and animals, and I hope we don’t lose power. In the meantime, Don is out right now buying bottled water in case we do. I can hear birds singing right now and it’s beautifully sunny. You would have no idea what’s on the way.

Crap. It’s very worrisome. Don thinks I worry too much, and he’s right.

It starts tomorrow morning, but I should be able to get a post up. Then, we’ll take it day by day.

We watched Everything, Everywhere, All at Once  last night, which is nominated for lots of Oscars.

I hated it. In fact, we didn’t finish it. It was like being assaulted with a strobe light for over 2 hours. I get the message of the movie, but it was all special effects. I’m not even sure why the performances were nominated – how could you chart any through line and character growth with all that going on? Lots of people disagree with me on this one, but both Don and I disliked it. It’s the kind of movie that is so different and edgy that all the critics hop on board and praise it. Bravo to the critics that called it out for what it is – and isn’t.

Wings of Desire  said it so much better. Stranger Things  also has lots of time/place/different world special effects, but the story is enhanced by it, not lost.

Okay. Today is the calm before the storm. Literally.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

The Aftermath

September 3, 2021 at 9:50 am by Claudia

My walk down to what is known as the ‘creek’ but is really a river (we also have another river steps away from the creek) showed me just how bad this storm was around here. I’ve never seen the level of the creek so high, completely covering little trees that were on bits of land within the river. The sound of the water is so loud, even this morning. I stood on the bridge (which has a deepening crack in the road – I called the county to report it) and looked down on the water, stunned. Then I walked down the road that my neighbor lives on, which also leads to a very popular campground. The entrance to the road said ‘road closed’ and it was quickly evident why it was closed. The water from the creek was right up to the doors of two different houses, one of which is a sort of shack, but lived in and maintained by a guy I’ve spoken to before. They weren’t trapped, as they could get out the back door, but it was frighteningly close. And down the road, another home that had been raised with supports (I’m not sure what you call them) under it because of another storm – that storm happened a few months after we moved in – had water covering the entire property.

The road to the campground was closed because water was completely covering the road. At 2:30 am, they had to evacuate everyone camping there. Everyone was transported to our fire station.

Don went into the neighboring town and the river had flooded the area called ‘the flats.’ Roads were closed. Bridges were closed. And this doesn’t take into account the horrific scenes in NYC, the tragic deaths throughout the Northeast.

I’m going to walk down there with Don when I finish this post to see how much of the water has receded.

We are on higher ground. The creek which is across the street is well below my neighbor’s property. And we are at a higher elevation than they are. The elevation changes that make mowing this property a bit of a pain are, it turns out, a good thing.

It’s a beautiful day today. The ground is very soggy, but as so often happens, you’d never guess what was happening two days ago.

After nearly a month of not painting, I did start one the other day. But I haven’t been able to get back to it because of…life. I was supposed to coach Ben yesterday via Zoom, but he asked if we could do it today instead as he’s got a heavy filming schedule and he’s just plain tired. So today, I’ll be working in the afternoon.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

A Thunder-Filled Morning

June 14, 2021 at 9:14 am by Claudia

We woke (a wee bit too early) to the sound of thunder. Big thunder. Thunder that shook the house, along with flashes of lightning. Early morning thunder doesn’t happen very often. As we made coffee and opened windows, the thunder kept rolling; long and loud booms coming from over the mountains.

It was wonderful. There were no high winds; just thunder, lightning, and eventually, pouring rain. We have more coming today and tomorrow.

Sort of a magical way to start the day.

Thanks for all your comments yesterday. I’m not sure what to do. Ad income, by the way, comes to me simply by your visits to my little spot on the Internet. It doesn’t come if you read the blog from an email but don’t come to the actual blog. Anyway, the costs of hosting this blog and maintaining its security are covered by that ad income. In the last month, I’ve had to renew and pay for my host for another year. My security just got renewed yesterday. Soon, another form of security will be up for renewal, as well as the services I use to back up the blog. So I’m in the midst of paying out money for those services and having to make a decision about emails at the same time is a bit overwhelming

Most of you weighed in yesterday on the way in which you visit the blog and I really appreciate it. I think I’ll try a survey of sorts later this week – here and on Instagram – to see just how many people really need that email delivered to them, as well as if they’re even reading them anymore. Then I’ll make a decision based on the results.

I’ve started another Roseville painting. This is where I left it yesterday and I have much more to do. I try to find a balance between being too critical and accepting that it’s all a process. So far, I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve created.

Now to find a tabletop easel. This one is too low and I end up with shoulder pain because I’m hunched over while painting. Shoulder muscles and neck tension are an issue already – always have been – and I don’t want to make that even worse.

Our days lately – we do our usual morning things; drinking coffee, waking up slowly, reading, meditating, Don goes to a virtual meeting at 6:30 am, I make our second cup of coffee and we chat for a while, then I write the blog and have some oatmeal. After all of that, Don goes upstairs to write music and record and I paint downstairs in the kitchen – along with, of course, all of the chores that need to be done on any given day. I like that we’ve found spaces in which to create, spaces that shift and change depending on just what it is we’re working on at the time. Dollhouse? Upstairs. Painting? Downstairs. Don sometimes records downstairs if I need the studio space. We are very sensitive to each other’s needs so we adjust as needed. This is a small house, so we need to be respectful and flexible.

I’ve had a hard time reading lately, most likely because I’m immersed in painting and gardening. It’s fine. I’ll shift back to reading more at some point. I’m not worried.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
