The Siren Call

August 27, 2013 at 9:17 am by Claudia

Oh, Trader Joe’s, why do you tempt me with your pretty packaging and your delectable treats? The other day, I was buying some flowers…only flowers….and I merrily made my way to the cashier. My eyes landed on this:

tjmarshmallows

First of all, the graphics, the colors: who can resist? But let’s get to the real selling point here – dark chocolate and marshmallows. That combination is simply a siren call that I can’t ignore, no matter how I try. Yes, I know. I had vowed to cut out all sugary treats from my daily food intake less than 24 hours before this particular item caught my eye. (We won’t mention all the sugary treats that are regularly in the rehearsal break room. No, let’s not go there.)

I succumbed. I limit myself to one or two a day. That shows some self-control, doesn’t it?

And now, Trader Joe’s, you have tempted me anew:

tjdip

Oh lordy. But wait, let me plead my case! Spinach. Kale. Greek Yogurt. All things that are good for you. And it’s Reduced Guilt! See? 50% Less Fat.

You can hardly blame me.

And sitting at my desk reading your blogs while dipping a cracker or two into that dip? Perfect.

In other news: I rarely buy decorating magazines anymore. Nine times out of ten, the content is either less than inspiring or I’ve already seen it on someone’s blog. But I do buy Flea Market Style because I love that style and I live that style. The homes and rooms the editors choose to highlight are always fresh and new and full of quirky, wonderful ideas.

fms

So I bought the newest edition the other day. It sat around the apartment for at least 5 days before I opened it last night as I read in bed. I came upon an article called “My Favorite Vintage Find” with the subtitle “Our readers spill the shopping beans on the antiques malls, flea markets, and vintage shops where they scored big.” It’s the kind of article I usually skim over, as it lists things state-by-state. But suddenly my eyes lighted on “Use Other Stair” metal sign and I thought, ‘Someone else has a sign like that?’ before I realized it was me!

FMSme

I had completely forgotten about submitting that idea. As I never heard anything back from FMS, the whole thing went right out of my head.

That’s the sign. (Photo from the original post about my find. Pre-new camera.)

It was rather a fun surprise! Thanks, Flea Market Style!

Happy Tuesday.

Rivers, Spring, Scout and Scarves

March 20, 2012 at 8:27 am by Claudia

I live on one side of the Hudson River. Trader Joe’s is on the other side, far enough away that it’s in a different state. Today, I’m crossing the spectacular Hudson River, over this very bridge, on a quick run to TJ’s. The cupboards are bare, my friends.

I need to take a one day break from rock lifting. I started to clean out the garden beds yesterday and saw lots of little green things springing out of the ground. Ah, spring. What is it about it that lifts my mood? Despite all the stress and the worries, I find my overall mood is much lighter, much happier. And the weather has been so beautiful. Believe me, those of us in the Northeast do not take this unseasonably warm weather for granted. No, we bask in it, we play, we garden, we run around with smiles on our faces!

Miss Scoutie on our walk. This girl is love and spirit and joy and fun. She’s 13. She plays like she’s 3.  Every morning she greets me with a smile on her face, happy and excited and playful and ready for a brand new day. How can I not smile and be equally joyful, even though I am far from a morning person? She’s my teacher. So is Riley. I learn from them every day.

There’s that heart on her side. I love my little girl.

Two new scarves are in the shop, if you’re interested. One is in that gorgeous shade of green; I call it apple green or spring green. The other is in a shade of taupe that I’ve fallen in love with. The perfect neutral for your wardrobe. Both are light-as-a-feather blends of bamboo.

I’m experimenting with a larger size photo in my posts. Are they too large or do you like them this way?

Have a wonderful Tuesday.

Adventures in Hot Chocolate

March 10, 2012 at 10:44 am by Claudia

You all know about my love for hot chocolate during the winter months, don’t you? I’ve written about it many times. I even shared the ultimate in hot chocolate with you when I was working in New York City last year. This rich confection was a treat from the City Bakery:

My favorite? Ghirardelli’s. Umm-ummm good!

But Ghirardelli’s is a bit pricey. I usually find a way to validate my purchase: “I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I rarely eat out, it’s cold outside. I deserve it.” But as winter is winding down, I couldn’t quite justify buying another tin. I started drinking Mandarin Orange Spice Herbal Tea in the afternoon. Very nice, but not quite the same as hot chocolate. Yes, it has a pleasant taste, it’s hot, it’s in a mug…but it’s not chocolate.

So, I found myself at Trader Joe’s the other day and happened upon a display featuring their tins of hot chocolate. Perfect, said I, perfect! Because we all know part of the allure of Trader Joe’s is the great prices. The price turned out to be considerably less than Ghirardelli’s. Yippee! And why not try another brand? I was expanding my horizons. I was proud of myself.

Fast forward a few days. Don left for work in the late afternoon. I feed the dogs at that point, make some tea or hot chocolate and sit down in the den. It’s a peaceful time that I look forward to. The dogs sack out after they’ve chowed down. The house is quiet. I usually read some blogs and sip on my beverage of choice.

Ah! This was the time to make that hot chocolate from Trader Joe’s. I warmed up the milk – actually, almond milk – and read the directions on the label which said to add 2 tablespoons of cocoa to warm milk. Hmmm. Ghirardelli’s instructions were to add 4 tablespoons. I figured I’d split the difference and use 3.

Off I went to the den, mug in hand, dogs at my feet. I got settled, opened up my laptop and proceeded to take a sip of the hot chocolate.

My mouth felt like it was on fire.

My taste buds were screaming. It felt like someone had dumped pepper in the mug and mixed it with the hot chocolate. It was bad. I almost did a spit take – had I been in a movie, I guarantee the director would have made me do one. What happened? Had I dumped everything into a mug that had something else in it? Unlikely. Was this a bad batch? Had someone, God forbid, tampered with the hot chocolate, like the Tylenol scare of so many years ago?

I ran to the kitchen and dumped it out. What the ???

Then I grabbed the tin for a closer look.

It was ‘Spicy Hot Cocoa.’

Spicy? Who the heck drinks Spicy Hot Cocoa? Well, obviously people do, but not me! When I told Don about it, he imagined the spices to be cinnamon and cloves; gentle, warm, comforting spices. Well, there’s cinnamon in it, for sure. But the main spice? Cayenne Pepper.

Yes, you read that correctly. Cayenne Pepper.

No wonder I ran to the kitchen, mouth on fire.

I immediately found some sort of generic brand of hot chocolate buried in the pantry and proceeded to drink it. I had to erase the sense memory of that nightmarish taste.

Lesson learned. Read labels more carefully. And pay the extra $3.50 for Ghirardelli’s.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
