Vignettes, Part One

April 26, 2010 at 6:59 pm by Claudia

My one and only day off is today. I ran some errands and then drove out to Ocean Beach to visit my favorite antique stores. After a somewhat stressful week, I needed to treat myself. Of course, I stopped in at Vignettes and took some photos to share with you.

A fabulous prom dress and a cabinet full of sparkly things.

Look at this mirror – it’s huge! You can see the reflection of a gorgeous settee, as well.

The cherubs remind me of the ones in my cherub painting – bought last year at Vignettes. I love, love my painting – it is hanging in our bedroom.

There are so many gorgeous mirrors here. I’ve been looking back home for one like the rectangular gold mirror or the oval white mirror in the upper left hand corner…to no avail. I’m afraid to buy one and ship it back home. Darn it! It would so wonderful over my piano. I’m also thinking about a hanging a lot of mirrors on our stairway wall – they would reflect the light from our skylight. Several bloggers have done that and it so striking.

The chair and the painting are fabulous.Do you see the chandelier? Lori just got it – it is Italian and exquisite. She has two. This one has pink glass and

this one has aqua (be still my heart.) As I said to Lori, “Why aren’t I independently wealthy?”

Speaking of Lori, who says she is my ‘friend’ – why did she schedule an afternoon with Rachel Ashwell one week to the day before I was to arrive in San Diego? Anyone? Yes, Ms. Ashwell came to Vignettes and everyone is raving about what a wonderful experience it was. Except me.

Boo hoo.

Lori gave me some of these chocolates – she had wrappers made up for them that were a miniaturized version of Rachel’s book cover. I’ve already eaten one, I confess. But I saved the wrapper.

I have more photos to share with you. I will save them for another post in the next few days. Truly, if you are anywhere near San Diego…you have to visit Lori’s stunningly beautiful shop. Everyone who works there is wonderful. It changes constantly…lucky for me!

Another Early Morning & Vignettes

April 20, 2010 at 9:19 am by Claudia

This morning I bounded out of bed, so happy that I had slept until 6:30 am.

It was 5:30 am.

And so the adjustment to the time change continues. Another sunrise for you – each morning view has been very different.

I drove out to the beach and dropped in on my favorite store yesterday – Vignettes. No sooner had I arrived then my friend Joy appeared. What a happy coincidence! And then Lori, the owner, appeared. And then we talked non-stop. I took a few photos but since so much chatting was going on, I didn’t get as many as I had planned. Plus, my camera batteries conked out half-way through the visit.

I also lost my favorite sunglasses and no amount of retracing my steps through Rite-Aid, the antiques mall and Vignettes uncovered them. I’m sad. I really loved those sunglasses.

On my way back home, I got a call from the company manager saying he was at the apartment complex. I hastened home and began my search for the board. I spoke about it yesterday – I need a board under the sofa cushions or I will be hobbling around like a very old lady. Last year’s board wasn’t there. I found another that seems to work just as well. As I watched 24 last night (why oh why was it canceled – what am I going to do?) my back thanked me for the support.

I’m homesick. When I’m home, I talk to the dogs constantly. They are always there. Here: it is just me. Today I begin rehearsals and that will help. The director is still stranded in England. I’m sure I will have much to share with you as the week progresses.

Have a wonderful day.

I am Loving Vintage Dress Forms

September 27, 2009 at 11:04 am by Claudia

I have a serious case of the I Wants. I have wanted one of these vintage dress forms for so long! I see them everywhere in blogland. My fellow bloggers are so creative – they adorn their dress forms in jewelry, hats, clothing, you name it. The one pictured above is from the Barn Sale back in San Diego.

Of course, I have no idea where I am going to put it in tiny little Mockingbird Hill Cottage. But why bother dealing with such a silly worry? I would find a place…I would.

My preference would be vintage, but I have seen a few wonderful tutorials on aging a new dress form. That would certainly cost less and the ‘aged’ forms I have seen are wonderfully vintage looking. There is even a Vintage Dress Forms Flickr group. Such eye candy! (The forms pictured above are from Vignettes.)

A girl can dream….

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
