Vintage Black Friday

October 30, 2009 at 9:22 am by Claudia

Happy Vintage Black Friday! I’m a tad late getting this post up, but better late than never. I was trying to think of something black and remembered this:

This was my grandmother’s trunk. For years it sat in a storage room in her basement and eventually I asked her if I could have it. I’ve had it since I was in my early 20’s and it has gone everywhere with me. For many years, it served as a coffee table in my various apartments. Now it serves as storage and is situated under our old green farmhouse table.

Now, I don’t know if you can make any of this out, but here is what is written on the top:

It says, in Grandma’s distinctive writing, “Carrie Locke, Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, Ontario.” This is the trunk Grandma took to Nursing School in the early 1900’s. The writing is fading, which makes me sad…but I know what it says.

The handles are broken and it is very worn, but I love it. What a story it has!

Thanks for all the stories about your own favorite things (in the previous post.) I loved hearing them. Some of you mentioned the pillow. I bought two of them in San Diego last summer. I’m crazy about them. They were on a bench on the porch, but now I’ve brought them inside for the winter.

Please visit Jill at Gypsy Brocante to see everyone participating in VBF.

Vintage Black Friday

It is Vintage Black Friday. I’m on my way home from Wilmington so I won’t be able to get around to your posts until later in the day. How about some vintage purses/bags?

A little straw clutch bag – given to me by my friend Lynne.

This antique beaded bag was given to me many years ago by my sister, Meredith. It is so lovely – I keep it safely in a dresser drawer. The beading is gorgeous, and the drawstrings have beautiful silver filligree balls.

Have a great Friday!

Just got home and realized that I didn’t say to visit Gypsy Brocante for a list of everyone participating. (I had a bad night – lots of coughing and not much sleep.) But I’m home safely with husband and dogs.

Vintage Black Friday

It is Vintage Black Friday again!

This sweet hat is one of my favorite things – though I have it packed away in a hatbox most of the time. The hat itself isn’t vintage – though it is hand-made and one-of-a-kind. I found it 11 years ago in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. I loved it so much that I bought a vintage hatbox to take it home in on the plane. I wrote about it here.

The beautiful black lace is vintage. Isn’t it lovely? (The millinery flowers are vintage as well and the gorgeous deep purple ribbon is from France.)

The brim of the hat is beaded. I love that little detail.
Please visit Jill at Gypsy Brocante to see more!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
