Stir Crazy

February 27, 2013 at 8:37 am by Claudia

rainywindow

The view out my window this morning. It’s a rainy, messy day. It started with sleet last night, then a wee bit of snow and now, rain. There is more rain promised for today and tomorrow.

It certainly gives one pause. Do I really need to go out? No. Does Don? Maybe. Poor Scout has no choice.

I deliberately haven’t allowed my thoughts go there until yesterday, but oh, how I am longing for spring. I need to garden, to put my hands in the soil, to see little green buds everywhere. Heck, I’m even looking forward to cleaning up the garden! Do you feel that way – those of you who live in a winter climate like me? Are you going a little stir crazy? It’s just about the end of February and March in my neck of the woods can be very wintry. Or not. I’m pulling for not.

I need to be outside, working in my garden, witnessing the renewal of spring. I’m tired of being indoors. I’m tired of gray, which is a perfectly nice color, but not in the sky and the landscape. These last days of winter are always the hardest for me. I can see spring off on the horizon, but it’s just out of reach.

So I’ve been crocheting a new flower for some garlands to sell in the shop.

newflowers

If I can’t see flowers in my garden, I can create some with some yarn and a hook. I like this flower even more than the other design I was using. And it’s time for a change, isn’t it? This is a pale pink Debbie Bliss baby yarn I had in my stash. Karen Dunn, if you’re looking at this post, this is the color I was thinking you might like for your garland. If you like this design, let me know, and I’ll make it for you.

Crocheting flowers makes me happy, which is very welcome on a gray, rainy day.

pjparty

Don’t forget about our pajama party on Monday. Today is such a flannel pajamas day! I have no idea how many of you will show up for my party, but I would so love it if you came. Your pajamas can be flannel or cotton or your pajamas can be a nightgown. Just write a post about how much you love them, any adventures you’ve had in them – you get the picture. I have had many adventures in mine. It will be a one-time-only linky party. Put the date, March 4th, on your calendars and we’ll have a bit of fun as we wind down Winter and move toward Spring.

Happy Wednesday.

It’s Monday

pinkclouds

Though I’m well and truly sick of winter, I must admit the beauty of bare tree branches against a sky filled with puffy pink clouds is breathtaking. It’s all in the timing, isn’t it? I just happened to be letting Scout out as the clouds turned pink and the sun started setting.

Speaking of Scout, we had a rather tough night last night. Shortly before bedtime, I noticed she was limping. I assumed it was her arthritis. She seemed to be in some pain. I finally realized, just as I was about to make my way upstairs to bed, that she’d torn a nail. It was still attached, but barely. Whenever I touched it, she started trembling. I called the vet’s – they always have a doctor on call – and he told me to wrap it (I already had) and that it would wait until this morning. Poor baby. It hurts her. I ended up sleeping downstairs on the sofa so I could keep an eye on her.

Not too comfortable. So I’m a wee bit sleep deprived.

Don doesn’t arrive home until late tonight – past my usual bedtime, in fact – after having been in California for nine weeks. He’s excited to be coming back home and we’re excited to have him here once again. Life in the theater sometimes requires long periods away from home. I’ll be gone for five weeks in April and May. And who knows what other jobs lie in store for him? We are truly happy being in each other’s company, so separations are never easy.

Thank you, thank you for all the lovely comments you left on my Five Years of Blogging post. They warmed my heart. If you didn’t happen to see it, you can click on the link or simply scroll down one post. I’m giving away an Obsession Scarf to one lucky commenter. I think I’ll keep the comments open until Friday night. Then I’ll choose the winner. Good luck!

This will be rather short as I have to call the Vet’s and, perhaps, cancel another appointment. I want my girl feeling tip top for her father’s homecoming!

It may officially be a holiday, but it’s a full Monday for me!

Happy Monday.

Snowy Sunday

February 10, 2013 at 8:21 am by Claudia

Greetings on a very cold Sunday morning. It’s currently 2° outside. Don’t worry. It will warm up to a toasty 36º later today.

snowbackforty

We survived Nemo rather nicely. (And by the way, why are we naming storms now? Does everything have to have a name?) On Friday, during the beginnings of the storm, I shoveled a couple of times, thinking that there would be less to deal with on Saturday. Friday evening, around 9:30, I shoveled a path for Scout one more time and I remember thinking that maybe the snow was winding down.

Saturday morning I woke up to at least 8 more inches of snow on top of what was already on the ground. Shoveling a long path for Scout without the benefit of any morning coffee is not my preferred way of starting the day.

snowpaths

I looked at the end of the driveway and saw that the plow had been by – creating a 2 foot high pile of wet snow that I knew was Trouble with a capital T. When I heard my neighbor firing up his snow blower around 8:30 am, I called over there and asked if he could snow blow that area of the driveway, that I could do everything else. Of course, his daugher said. I went outside and tackled the paths and top of the driveway. I dug the car out. I shoveled and shoveled and shoveled. Then, along came my neighbor and his sweet daughter (who has helped take care of our dogs in the past) and darned if they didn’t snow blow (is that a verb?) the whole driveway. I cannot tell you how thrilled and grateful I was. I hugged them both and thanked them profusely. And I smiled.

The shoveling that I did, and there was a lot of it, was exhausting. I simply can’t imagine how long it would have taken me to dig out the driveway and that pile of plowed snow. Or how hard it would have been on my back. As it is, I’m sore today. So thanks and gratitude for good neighbors is the order of the day.

I live in the Hudson Valley of New York. We got a lot of snow but our neighbors to the north and east, especially those in Connecticut and Massachusetts and the rest of New England, really got walloped. This was one huge storm. Our power stayed on. We were safe and warm. I know many others were less fortunate and they are in my thoughts.

Scout loves it, of course.

I cannot watch the Weather Channel during a snow storm anymore. It gives me a headache. “Just bring it down a notch or two” I scream at the television. They are simply too hyped up. I found myself watching my local channel, where the weather is reported in a sane, calm manner.

And I stayed sane and calm.

Don sure is getting out of a lot of shoveling. He comes home a week from tomorrow. He’s in for a shock.

I will try to get around to the links from yesterday’s party, but I’m pretty wiped out. It may take a while or it may not happen for this week. But only this week.

Forgot to add: Dad has been moved to the Rehab facility that is near the hospital (also houses the nursing home my mom is in.) On Friday, he told my sister and me that he was going home – this alarmed us as we didn’t think he was ready to be on his own yet. Turns out the hospital was recommending rehab. I tracked him down at the hospital and spoke to a nurse who told me he had been having a ‘rather hard time’ and had refused to go to rehab. The doctor spoke to him. The social worker spoke to him. Both advised him that if he didn’t go into rehab he might end up right back in the hospital. And then the nurse said, very sweetly, ‘He’s calmed down now and has agreed to go. He was threatening to sue the hospital. Would you like to speak to him?’ Ummm. Yes.  Whereupon I firmly told Dad that rehab was the best thing for him and that he was to do what the doctor ordered. Oy.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
