I’m writing this post on Sunday night because we have to get to Don’s appointment early Monday morning. Fingers crossed that the bandage is removed, stays removed, and all is well. Mr. Don has been doing a bit too much on his own today and his hand hurts. I was groggy from taking a nap and I didn’t grasp what he was up to or I would have stopped him. Sigh.
On Saturday I was looking outside one of the kitchen windows and I saw two chipmunks running around. Don said he’d seen them lately. You know I’m a sucker for chipmunks, so I ran for my big girl camera and lens. (They were awfully cute.)
He’s right outside the window on the strip of concrete that runs from the door to the entrance to the secret garden. There are a few openings in the concrete like the one you see here. Remember, there used to be planter under that window? The wood deteriorated and we finally removed it.
The other chipmunk joined this one and before I could blink an eye, he went down into that hole. Thankfully, I clicked the shutter at the right time.
Right after this, the other one also jumped down there. Now we know where they hang out.
I love this time of year. There’s so much activity around here: bald eagles, groundhogs, robins guarding their nest, chipmunks, bunny rabbits. I should just station myself at that window, camera in hand.
The robins will be glad to see us drive off tomorrow morning. A respite for them. Don was sitting on the porch and one of them flew into the maple tree and stared at him. Making sure of his whereabouts, no doubt. We also have more honeybees than ever. (I had to rescue one from inside the house this afternoon.) When you walk over by the catalpa there are hundreds of them swarming around the opening. The buzzing sound is quite loud. I was over there trimming poison ivy on Saturday and one buzzed by me, but immediately moved away. So, they’re not aggressive.
Okay. Time for Sunday night dinner.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

praying for don to get good news today from the doctor and most of all to feel that way … good. you, too.
great catch in the photos … chipmunks are little and fast! not sure where it came from, but in my family we call them “squinnies”. maybe that’s a regional thing? whatever, they sure are cute!
lots of birds and earl the squirrel here. cardinals, blue jays, three kinds of woodpeckers, robins, rose-breasted grosbeaks, starlings, etc. though they spend summers all over iowa (per a great bird book), only twice in my life have i seen a baltimore oriole … including one last week on the deck of my parents’ townhome. not very often do we see rabbits and deer, but always happy when we do. lots of cows and horses seen on rides in the countryside, also hawks and sometimes wild swans and wild turkeys. only rarely have we seen any bulls, sheep or pigs. did see two peacocks once … all fun. a few wasps and flies, too. all creatures big and small, the Good Lord made them all. :)
happy, safe monday to everyone.

I really hope all goes well with Don’s hand! It would feel so much better to have that bandage off and to use his hand just a little more!
It’s so nice that you can see those animals on your property…and that you enjoy seeing them!
Sending lots of good thoughts for both of you today!

Chipmunks are my favorites. I never kick them out of the bird feeder (unlike the squirrels!)

Hoping by now Don has bandages removed and is free to do the things he wants. I know what you mean by all the activity outside your door. Each time I’m at the kitchen sink there’s something happening in the backyard. Gray and red squirrels and chipmunks going after the peanuts I leave out for them. Indigo Buntings popping in to sample one of my feeders. A guy in lumberjack equipment taking down the neighboring pines…oh, wait.
Sorry. I don’t mean to be still harping on that, but boy do I miss seeing those huge trees from my kitchen windows. Yesterday’s super warm temps jump started the leaf growing. Once everything is fully green, including the fast growing maple we planted several years ago to replace a diseased Ash, I’ll be able to think beyond what’s been lost. Unfortunately, I know there won’t be replacements for the pines. There’ll be a trampoline sitting there. I told Dean we need to plant another tree out back now. I firmly believe if you take a tree down you must plant a replacement.
