Christmas/Winter Prep

December 9, 2024 at 8:00 am by Claudia

Another photo from the other night. Gorgeous.

We got our tree yesterday. It’s really lovely. No decorations or lights yet, as we’re giving it time to settle. Photos will be coming, of course. They’re ridiculously expensive but Don still wants a real tree, so we consider the tree our Christmas gift to each other.

We also removed both window a/c units, which is heavy work. We packed them up and put them in the shed. (Our backs were complaining by the afternoon.) At the same time, we stacked the bins of Christmas ornaments on the floor and we’ll bring them inside later today.

It was a busy day and I’m glad we finally dealt with the air conditioners – something we seem to be doing a bit later every year. I’ll bring the furniture cushions in from the porch today and we’ll carefully move the egg cup cubby so we can stow them under the stairs. Since we don’t want to move the cubby more than twice a year, this will also be the time when Don switches out a guitar (yes, in addition to all the guitars upstairs in the office, Don has a couple stored under the stairs.)

We’ll put lights on the tree this afternoon. Hurrah!

Queen for the Day: Katie.

And four more:

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

A Christmas tree is a nice gift to each other, bringing smiles and warm feelings. It’s always nice to see favorite ornaments on the tree. Sounds like you did have a busy day yesterday with all the moving of things. Enjoy today.

There’s nothing like a crown to make a girl look powerful and beautiful!
You are way ahead of us in the decorating department. I am retiring at the end of this year and can’t wait to create all the sewing projects and garden ideas that are floating around in my head!
    Enjoy your holidays!

do you keep something like a piece of thick wool or felt under the cupboard to make it easier to move? or maybe consider putting lockable casters on the bottom? and do you remove all the egg cups before moving that perfect-for-holding-egg-cups cupboard, or are they all safely puttied in place? either way, please take good care of your backs (especially after all of your work over the weekend).

did a bit of Christmas decorating yesterday. looks festive so am glad we did it. have several presents on hold so will get them (and groceries, birdseed) today. whenever possible, i try to avoid weekend errands and am grateful i can usually do that.

may our two days of sunny 60-degree weather (which were lovely, enjoyed and appreciated) head your way for you to also enjoy and appreciate.

    happy, safe monday to everyone.

It’s not difficult, we just slide it out from the wall at an angle. But one of us has to hold on to it because it’s a bit rickety. No casters, no wool or felt, the egg cups are secure. We’ve done this a lot now.

      Thanks Kathy.

      Stay safe.

Love those dark bare branches against the cold wintry sunset colors.

Queen for a Day! I used to watch that old TV show when I was very small—early fifties, maybe. Do you remember it? What a tear-jerker and a funny old memory. Your girls are much more beautiful queens.

Yes, we used to watch it when I was a kid. I can still see the set!

Sounds like you worked hard yesterday…but checking off the air conditioners must make you smile. There are always so many little chores that need to be done to prepare for winter it seems. I don’t envy you moving the egg cup cabinet.

I was wondering if you ever thought of developing back stories for the girls? I remember you had a back story for Caroline (!) in one of your doll houses. (My memory is failing me today, can’t remember which doll house.). Anyway…the girls all look delightful!

    Enjoy your day! ;)

No more back stories – I can’t even keep track of their names at times. Yes, I have a back story for Caroline, but that’s the only one.

      Thanks so much, Donnamae.

      Stay safe.

Sounds like you’ve got moving the egg cup cubby down to a fine art. Have fun decorating your tree. They are very expensive here, too. Before Covid we used to get a lovely tree from IKEA for $25 plus a coupon to use in January and they planted a new tree for every one they sold. Sadly, they don’t sell trees anymore and we go to a nursery . The one we bought last year was $89. It was a beautiful shape. I’m off to make my shortbread cookies to take to our Antique Collectors Club’s Christmas social on Wednesday. I’ll make peanut brittle and some Ritzy Reeses. These are Reeses peanut butter thins sandwiched between 2 Ritz crackers. So easy and so tasty. You put the Reeses Thins on each cracker and microwave for about 30 seconds until the chocolate is softened. Then you cap each one with another cracker. Make sure you buy Ritz Original not the cheese ones. Nice salty combination of chocolate, peanut butter and cracker. Hugs, Elaine

Our trees cost quite a bit more. Not sure why!

The under cupboard sounds like a very handy spot to have. I’ll be eager to see your lovely tree. All my outdoor stuff is finally in and just a couple more clean-up things to do outside. Our snow melted and though it’s a bit muddy, not too bad to finish off. It’s been warmer and is chilling down over the next day or so, so I need to get going on that!

Katie is awfully cute in her finery!

Hi. We are expected to have a wet winter. It’s snowing lightly right now though (thankfully its light). My diary is a week behind now. Gotta do that.
I’m ready for Christmas except for our tree and cards (who knows when canada post will be going again).
I love your last post, photos of the night sky. The last photo is gorgeous!
I’m going to look through your blog to tell you of my favorite blythe doll. For christmas my blythes will share a nice new outfit and a toque as well.
My husband is a bit concerned about the cost. But he knows I love my girls!
    Take care, keep warm.

Claudia, Imogen is really one of my favs. Maybe with her dark hair. I have a couple friends, one from the Philipines s and one, another friend living now in Calgary, from El Salvador. Maybe it’s Imogen’s little expression. One of shyness, yet you can see that she’s strong within. I can’t but love my first Blythe, Cassie. She has a longish bob like I’d like to have.
I love real trees. Ours is fake and it’s in rough shape.
Found out yesterday our Nissan vehicle may be worth Nothing. Nissan has gone broke. Oh, man. I’m just not to worry too much. I worry as much as my Cassie girl.
What would my days be without your wonderful blog and my friends here

I searched and I haven’t found anything about Nissan being in financial trouble. That doesn’t make sense to me. I sure hope that isn’t true.

      Stay safe, Irene.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
