Cleaning & Rediscovering

November 14, 2010 at 2:30 am by Claudia

While in the midst of cleaning off the porch, putting things in the shed for the winter as well as rearranging said shed, look what I found:

I forgot about this shelf! It is a little fragile, but I think I can use it. The scrollwork is so pretty.

I want to paint it a creamy color. Maybe it can go in my studio?

Then I found this:

This little glass lamp was my grandmother’s. I’ve never been enamored of the brass finish, but the hand-painted glass? Love it.

Pink roses – perfect!  I’m going have it re-wired. You are all so crafty and savvy – any ideas on what to do with the brass? Suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I’m not even sure it is real brass, it may be ‘faux brass.’

This came in the mail yesterday. It is a little 3 x 5  oil painting by Lara Harris. She painted several of these to help raise money for her cousin, Holly, who needs to travel to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore to be treated for a debilitating disease involving the inner ear. Her cousin’s husband will have to take unpaid leave in order to be with her and care for their 4 children. I checked Lara’s Etsy shop and there are at least 3 still available.

Isn’t this beautiful? Lara is a very talented artist who lives in my home state of Michigan. Someday I hope to have her paint my doggies – Lara specializes in pet portraits. Stop by and visit her and if you’re inclined to donate to a good cause, her dress paintings are very reasonably priced.

My back is getting much, much better. Thanks so much for your concern. I am being careful, I promise.

I’m so glad your back is better. I think you should get your dogs painted! What a great idea! By the way, I love the brass and wouldn’t change it. That is just me. I think the lamp looks beautiful as is. I also love the scroll on the side table. Hmm. Hard to tell in the photos if the color or treatment is right. I might strip it and then consider. I love the look of natural wood.
I miss you and our long conversations. I just talked to a mutual friend of ours who called me out of the blue. Made me miss all our old days together and our conversations about the work we were trying to do better than anything done before.
That last year… my last year, Charlie and I tried to live in the moment, the moment that was perfection. And it was perfect.
I looked back and realized you were there, sharing the perfect season.

Nice shelf! It will look great in cream.
And about that lamp. Just spray paint that brass. Rustoleum White would be pretty. Just remove everything that is removable. Tape of everything else and spay the heck out of it. Works great have done/ seen it done 100s of times.

Hi Claudia, what wonderful finds! How about painting over the ‘brass’ with a soft pearl-finish paint (if they make it) – to work with the painted roses? I stopped by Lara’s site and love her paintings – I’ve asked her if she has the bird nests in smaller sizes – I hope that she does! Ciao, bella!

I actually like the old (brass?)… I don’t think I would change it. LOVE that globe lantern.. my grandmother had three or four of them, which my mother has now. They DO need rewiring!…

    Claudia,
What fun to rediscover “stuff”! I think the lamp is gorgeous just the way it is but that is just my opinion… The shelf is wonderful and creamy would be beautiful. We went “antiquing” yesterday and saw lots of Roseville and McCoy. Came home empty handed. I need to reorganize before I try to stuff one more thing in this house!

    Hi Sweet Friend,

How fun to discover forgotten treasures, I love the shelf and would be perfect painted a creamy color. What a beautiful lamp and the roses are stunning…as far as the metal, they have products at Michaels that create different finishes to metal…maybe they have something that would be more to your liking.

What a beautiful painting by Lara, I have long admired here work.

    Enjoy your day!!!

Like the others, I am an antique brass fan, not the bright shiny color.
I am in the throws of cleaning too, getting outdoor things under cover and moving in the filing cabinets I have been picking up. For now they have to live in my breakfast nook which mean the furniture there had to move to the basement. In an older white cabinet I also found a vintage hand painted oil lamp and chimney. I had carefully hidden it so it would not be broken. Time to find a display spot.

I love that shelf and think a white finish will do it great justice. The lamp is lovely. I’ve seen many bloggers give things a zinc finish and it looks very nice and time-worn. Not sure how it would look against the lovely roses tho.

When I go out to my shed all I find are things like a lawn mower, hedgeclipper, etc. Hmmmmmm, I have the wrong type of shed, I think. But my attic often yields fun, forgotten finds when I can get up there and make my way through the forest of stuff.

Looking forward to see what you do with your lovely finds. Ann

Isn’t it fun when we “happen” upon things we forgot we have? I’m so glad you’re feeling better, Claudia.

Happy Sunday. What fun to discover a forgotten treasure. The lamp looks like real brass so you may want to consider keeping it original (I wouldn’t even polish it). Love the painted glass. And the shelf will be perfect for one of your collections. Have fun whatever you decide to do (:

I remember that lamp. So many wonderful things Grandma had that we will never see again. I broke the top of a lamp she had horsing around in her living room. She was so mad. I think she probably is still mad about that incident.

must have been the day for cleaning and discoveries. I found a few projects during my cleaning frenzy that were only partially finished. Some I completed and some are still a work in progress. I finished a big pile of mending which will be welcome this winter most were long pants. I almost finished a small wall hanging quillt of blocks with hand painted sun bonnet suzies on it I will take a picture when I get it hung. I love the lamp It resembles a set of lamps I have in my living room But they are green. I would keep it as is, it really is lovely.

I’ll second, third or fourth everyone else suggestion to spray paint the brass- you might want to spray it with a primer first. When I’ve had newer brass that I want to look old, I’ve colored it with a black magic marker and then wiped off the excess- the dark color stays in the cracks, giving it an aged look.

I love the potential of a new unfilled shelf- what to put on it?

    Hi Claudia,
Oh thank goodness your back is feeling better! My daughter is going through the same thing with her back right now she has two slipped disks..
I love your pink lamp, its really pretty! you could always take the lamp apart and spray paint the brass maybe sliver. But the warn brass looks vintage along with the lamp..so maybe leave it as is..either way its a beauty!
and what a great shelve! I love the scroll work.
Have a sweet day and hugs, Elizabeth

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
