Collecting: A Wee Bit of Madness

March 1, 2016 at 9:30 am by Claudia

3-1 white rose 1

This is what happens when you’re completely and utterly enchanted by something…say, Roseville Pottery…and you’re sad most of the time and your back hurts and you’re stuck in your chair and you need something to cheer you up. And you figure that this particular something, which is on eBay and is a new pattern for you, might be a neat addition to your collection. And then you are the only bidder, so, come on ! It’s a no-brainer.

This pattern is White Rose. The vase is 7 inches high.

3-1 white rose 2

The other side. I really love the shape, which is different from any other piece in my collection.

3-1 shelf

On the shelf in my office.

It’s a wee bit of madness this infatuation I have with Roseville Pottery. And I fully recommend a little madness of this sort for everyone. It’s so much fun!

3-1 priceguide

Also in yesterday’s mail was the price guide for Roseville that I ordered through Amazon. It’s clearly self-published and simply lists prices by the numbers assigned to each style and pattern. For instance, this particular vase has “Roseville – U.S.A” and the numbers 983-7 in raised script on the bottom. 983 denotes a specific vase in the White Rose pattern and 7 indicates the height of the vase.

No photos. Just updated, and that’s the key, prices for every item in the Roseville Pottery line. The many reference books I already have are full of gorgeous and very helpful photos, but the prices are out of date. This particular little book is updated every year.

I couldn’t help but check out the pieces I’ve purchased and the amount I paid for them against the price range given in the pamphlet. I’m happy to say I’m doing extremely well! Always less than half the amount given, sometimes much  less than that.

Check out the font used on the cover of the pamphlet. I must admit it makes me chuckle.

We’re most likely heading to Florida sometime next week for a visit with my family. We need a break. We need sun and sand and the smell of the ocean. We especially need my sister and her family, including Little Z and Max, her dog.

It will be nice to have a little vacation. That’s an understatement.

Happy Tuesday.

Happy March Claudia! Love that new little vase – just so cute. What a great plan for you and Don to go to FL. The warmth should help as well as Little Buddy!! And, of course Meredith, Max and all the other family members…but especially Little Buddy. This will be the first time that Don meets him, correct? Excited for you both.

Another beautiful piece of pottery Claudia and to know that you’ve gotten all of them for such good prices is the icing on the cake. A trip to see Meredith and her family! I think it’s just what the doctor ordered for you and Don. After all who can spend much time thinking about themselves when they’re around that little guy? He has so much energy that he’ll keep you running day and night. I don’t know how Meredith does it all. I just know you will have a wonderful time. Give Meredith a big hug for me and tell her to do the same for you!
    Blessings, Betsy

I love your new pottery piece. I don’t know if this is a word used to describe pottery, but it has a softness about it, if that makes any sense. I’m so glad that you and Don are getting away. It will do you both good to be surrounded by love.

A most excellent plan, Claudia. The change of scene and weather will do you good. Will you visit your parent’s kitties? How I wish that you could bring them back with you. Cats are wonderful and gentle companions. The vibration of a cat’s purr is very therapeutic. I know that you have had allergies, but maybe there’s a chance that you’re not allergic to those two. Some cats have different proteins that are less problematic. I know you’re not ready for a dog, but a couple of affectionate kitties might be nice to have around the cottage.

I confess, I’d worried about the cats. What a relief to know that the transition worked out well. This is a very lucky development; it could have been otherwise and you and your sister didn’t need anymore worry than you already had, about everything. I’m so glad to hear this about the cats!

It could happen that, as they say, “The change will do you good.”

It’s the first time you and Don can go away together for any length of time. If you’ve got cleared, snowless highways for your getaway window (and no worry for frozen pipes at home), and you’re both (at the moment) between gigs, why not? Perfect plan; wise choice. Some different scenery, with less tension/stress than your previous (urgent) trips to Florida. You’ve got the newer, reliable car. You can take turns driving. Just get in plenty of road trip breaks along the way so that your back doesn’t get too stiff.

Maybe you can see something new you’ve never had a chance to see before, or revisit somewhere you enjoyed but haven’t been to for a time; a little side jaunt.

You can’t beat the healing light of a good-weather beach environment (perfect time of year to go to our southerly Atlantic/Gulf state, right?); artists have been drawn to that light over the centuries but few can capture the real thing. Nothing like being right there, to experience it…and be tantalized; mesmerized. Healed by it. And, of course, the warmth of the sun; the heady scent of sea and breeze; the sound of the waves and gulls; salt spray on your skin; soft blues and beige, a feast for the eyes. The feel of sand sifting through your fingers and toes…muted human voices absorbed by the steady, hypnotic roll of waves. Even food tastes better when you have a picnic at the beach; just pack a little lunch and take it all in. Land’s End. A tonic. Breathe deep.

We will. The temps up here look like they’ll be good enough for us to leave without worry. The weather on the trip? We’ll see, but let’s face it, that’s always unpredictable. If we have to stop and stay someplace, we will.

I have a friend who, some years back, took an early summer vacation to the Cape Cod area. When they were on Nantucket, a huge nor’easter blew in and they were stuck, for a few days. I can think of worse places to hole up. It enhanced their vacation rather than mucking it up or delaying anything. It’s good you and Don can go to Florida with no pressing deadlines so that you both can do just that…get off the road, when you want to, or need to! I’m so happy you guys are doing this next week.

Exactly. We have an idea about when we need to get back here, simply because Don had to let his agents know he’d be unavailable, but even that can be flexible if necessary.

After reading so much about pottery on your blog, I noticed that my neighbor and friend (by whom my daughters at one time or another were employed to take care of his menagerie of guinea pigs, Belgian hares and Duchess rabbits) has a very small collection of pottery, some of it Roseville! I would never have known that if not for you, Claudia! I’m glad you will be in Florida soon. Your last trip was so tinged with sadness. I hope this one will immerse you in positive memories and experiences, laughs, and lots of hugs.

Very glad you’re getting the opportunity for a change-of-scene. You need a respite from your sadness. Grief is bad enough, but grief in dull, dreary, gray, cold Winter is just adding insult to injury. Sun, warmth, a beach, the perpetual sound of surf. Maybe even a grapefruit plucked fresh from a tree [which is MY idea of Florida heaven]. And the chance to breathe slowly and deeply and to just “be away” from your grief. Not to mention being with your sister and that adorable nephew of yours. Hope you get to enjoy a nice long visit….? ?

Claudia, I can see why you love this vase and these pieces. They are really quite wonderful. The only piece of Roseville I had was an urn that got broken. :-( But I do have a piece of treasured pottery from each grandmother. One is a handled vase (Hull), . and one is a bowl (Rookwood) which was on my parents’ breakfast room table as long as I can remember. It had faux grapes in it and still does. I couldn’t bear to part with the grapes. They heard many a lively conversation as we always ate at the table together.

That blue color is particularly wonderful, and I can understand how collecting Roseville could become addictive. Of course, eBay makes collecting even more attractive. I’ve managed to snake some outrageous deals on china over the years. I would rather have something lasting than clothes that go out of style. You can share china, but not shoes. That’s how I justify my collection… or rather, obsession. ;-)

I am thrilled you and Don are going to Florida next weel! It’s just what the doctor ordered, and we have had nice weather this week: blue skies, cool to warmish temps, and sunshine. Plus, it will be great for you to spend time with your family. A win/win for sure!

I will be down in Central Florida next week and would love to treat you and Don to lunch or dinner on your way to your sister’s. No pressure, but if you come through and it works, I would happily treat you. I know you are vegetarian, and I would research those options. A friend owns a health food restaurant, and the food is quite good. There are orher places as well. Just know the invitation is open. Could also take you to some antique shops. :-)

    xo
