Color Serendipity

November 2, 2011 at 5:00 am by Claudia

I’ve noticed a certain color combination appearing in my home, specifically in the kitchen.

This combination of red and aqua/robins egg blue/turquoise/sea glass – whatever you want to call it.

I didn’t plan it this way. As most often happens in my decorating life, these things just evolve over time. When we moved into the cottage 6 years ago, though I’m not especially enamored of window coverings, I ordered these roman shades. The kitchen has so many windows and Don was going to be away working and I didn’t feel entirely comfortable being on display as I cooked and washed dishes in the evening.

The red came long before the blue.

Then I started to fall in love with blue. But not dark blue. No, I fell for all of the various manifestations of aqua in my McCoy Pottery collection. Those particular blues made me very happy, indeed. Soon, the chalkboard was painted in that color.

Then I painted the hanger for the jumping jacks in a slightly different shade of blue.

And one day, not so long ago, I realized that I had combined it with red. It’s there in the jumping jacks. And the bench. And a pillow.

It’s there in the red chair in the living room that we’ve had for years.

Funny how these things happen.

Then I looked at my blog yesterday.

And there it is again!

Now I see it everywhere. On Pinterest, on blogs – especially this one.

I am officially smitten. And it appeared in my home by happy accident. Serendipity.

Pretty neat.

Do you have a favorite color combination?

Remember tomorrow is Reality Shot Thursday. And once again, I find myself scheduled for 2 posts as I’m also doing a book review. Double the pleasure!

It is neat… sort of like ‘accidental decorating’. The red and aqua if nice and very eye catching… also good during the dark days that winter can bring. It just brightens a person’s life to have appealing colors around them.

It is a happy color combination. And, the most important thing is that it makes you happy.

My “finds” sort of dictate what happens. Our 1960’s rattan porch set with blue and white ticking stripe down pillows took me in an unexpected direction but I gladly went there.

After reading your post, I looked around and found pink, aqua and yellow everywhere, specially in the living room!

I`ve loved all shades of blue all of my life; pink and yellow have snuck in there recently, lol!

I love those colors-especially the pop of red here and there! My decor has evolved over time, it’s the things I love, that I’ve collected or have been given as gifts.

I love your color combination. The aqua with red is unexpected and so fresh. I find that I have a touch of red (or a lot of red) in most rooms in my house. I like barn red with pale yellow. But for the most part, my decorating style is pretty eclectic.

    Good morning Claudia… :-)

Oh how I love EVERYTHING at your cozy cottage. And this color combination is just delish. Just perfect together.

Now, that little white cabinet? My daughter just bought one exactly like it. Does it have a tiny metal tag above the doors? I can’t remember what hers says, but it’s there. She just painted it Annie Sloan Old White. It’s just too cute.

    Huggies to you!

    PS… Having a giveaway! :-)

    Not surprised that you
    are leading the charge
    with this fresh color
    combination, as you
    have a wonderful eye
    for what is lovely. I
    am smitten with your
    jumping jacks hanging
    from the hooks; HOW
    sweet is that?? Looks
    like a serene, cozy,
refuge and I can see why
    you love being in it!

    Happy November, Claudia,

I’ve heard it over and over again: if you love it, really love it, it will work. Your home is a marvelous example of that truism. Love the blues and reds. . . . very, very lovely!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
