Counting Sheep

May 18, 2010 at 8:41 pm by Claudia

I was given a special mission today. Drive to Old Towne Orange, find adorable little vintage sheep from previous post, buy 3 for my sister and 1 for me (thanks, Mer), bring them back to MHC West. Mission accepted. Since today’s rehearsals didn’t really require my presence, I decided this was the day. Luckily, the little sheep were still there. Mission accomplished.

Could they be any cuter? They have their original paper collars with ‘Germany’ stamped on them. I’ve done some research – they are called German woolly stick leg sheep or German Putz sheep. They were made in Germany in the early part of the 20th century for putz (landscape) scenes. Pennsylvania Dutch and Moravian families made little putz scenes at Christmas. These sheep are about 2″ high and 2″ from tail to head.

A tad blurry -but there is the collar stamped ‘Germany.’ One of this sheep’s eyes has worn off.

Meredith – I’m taking the sheep with the aqua collar, if it’s all right with you. Thank you to Jillian of Bella Rosa Antiques who left a comment telling me I should snap them up. Apparently the legs are fragile and are often broken – so to find them in good condition is rare.

Lori of My Faerie Window says that sheep like hats…. So I am going to make a little hat for my sheep. I’ll post photos when I have something wearable.

I promised I would share photos of the sale at the Urban Barn. There are quite a few, so I will spread them over a few posts. I will keep my comments to a minimum.

Want Vintage Dress Form. Badly.

By the way, while I was typing away just now, I felt an earthquake. Just a tad unsettling. The local news just confirmed that we had a 5.1 quake. And we can expect more in the ‘near future.’

Gulp.

More photos in the next post.

ewwwe…an earthquake! I think I’d have peed in my pants! How scary!!

Girl, I think you should have swiped that dress form up just like you swiped those sheep up! It’s gorgeous!
And the sheep? Precious! Their little legs look like match sticks! I can see why they are fragile!!!

Well, if you have any more rumbles, be safe!!!!

How cute! As I’m sure you know my birthplace (New Zealand) is famous for sheep and wool exports. In NZ there is a province called Canterbury, when it comes to sports people from any provice other than Canterbury say that Cantabrians are one-eyed so I think that poor little sheep with only one eye can only be called “Canty” ;)

Love your sheep, Claudia. Hate the thought of earthquakes. I like terra firma, not terra quaka. Be well, my friend.

Oh my goodness…those sheep are simply adorable. I’ve never seen any like them. I LOVE the last photo of the vintage dress hanging on the old rusty rake…too cool. I feel like I’ve been MIA. I’ve had my nose to the sewing needle since the last of October. It’s starting to calm down now. xo rachel

Good morning from the East Coast. Yikes, I saw that earthquake notice last night on the 10 o’clock news here.

Those sheep are just as cute as can be – I’d love to see them posing in hats – maybe to match the paper bands? Vintage shops just don’t seem to be so common in northwestern New Jersey. I’ll have to do more research – your photos were great to look through. Thanks, and hope all is well. Sounds like the rehearsals are all going well! Ciao, bella!

I love the bulldog painting – a lot.

I was in San Diego for the earthquake, in a building the renters said is on wheels and never moves during quakes. For the record, it moved.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
