Cover for Office Chair & a Sunset

January 26, 2010 at 10:35 am by Claudia

We have an office chair in the guest bedroom/office/music studio that has been around for years. It is covered in that kind of nubby fabric that draws dog hair like a magnet, trapping it there for all time. If you have long-haired dogs like we do, you know what I’m talking about. Endless rounds with the lint brush and vacuum never really got the job done. Exhibit A:

You see, I’m going for total transparency here (as they say in politics.) Hair. Everywhere. I have this panel of vintage curtain fabric that has been hanging around here for years. The other morning, while Don was in the city for the day, I grabbed the staple gun and the fabric and went to town.

Much better! I suppose I could have made a slipcover for the chair but it is used by my husband and he doesn’t care that much how it looks. I just wanted it to look better – quickly. If you look closely at the chair back, you will see staples. So what? It’s working for me. And for my husband, who remarked on how much he likes the new look.

Yesterday it rained and rained and rained – the kind of windy, sideways rain that is just plain messy. I had to go out and run several errands. Even with my oversize Ikea umbrella (which constantly popped inside-out) I was soaked – jeans, shoes, hair, jacket – completely soaked. I was not a happy camper.

But at the end of the day I saw this spectacular sunset:

Okay, Mother Nature, I get it…it was all worth it.

…your chair looks great, and maybe it will no longer be a magnet for pet hair! (then again, maybe you’ll never get to sit in it again…what?! yes, pets like pretty things too ~ te,he!) And oh what a glorious sunset! Thanks for sharing it with us. xo

Muuuuuuch better without all the “fur” on it so apparent, honey. ;-) Nope, hubbies don’t really care that much what we do as long as we feed them and give them lots of “loving” is what I’ve found out after 49 years of marriage. Works every time with Jack!

Love the chair redo, Claudia! You always use the nicest fabrics!

Okay, we had the same weather here. Amanda and I ran to AC Moore before she had to go back to the city and my umbrella turned inside out in the parking lot.. and then my glasses blew off the top of my head (grrrr…) stooped to pick them up and the umbrella blew inside out again… While trying to position the umbrella to “right” itself, I think I lost my glasses again because I haven’t found them since. Good thing I don’t need them for driving, only for reading… And good thing they were just cheap magnifiers… We didn’t get the beautiful sunset that you did as it rained until after sundown… Donna

I’ve got some fur-magnet pieces, too. With all the time I’ve spent de-furring the chairs, I could have just shaved all the animals and been done with it. LOL (not really….my cats would be pretty peeved if I shaved ’em….and I don’t ant to wake up with a surprise on my pillow some day…)

    HI CLAUDIA,
LOVE THE CHAIR, IT HAS THAT VINTAGE LOOK, VERY NICELY DONE. WE ALSO HAD THAT RAIN, PART OF OUR WHITE PICKET FENCE BLEW DOWN, AND THERE WERE TREE BRANCHES EVERYWHERE. HOW BRAVE YOU WERE TO GO OUT IN IT. I LIVE 45 MINUTES FROM LONG BEACH ISLAND, I WOULD HAVE LOVE TO SEE THE OCEAN IN ALL THAT WEATHER, BUT THE DRIVING WOULD HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE. TAKE CARE, RIZZI

Isn’t it amazing what a little bit of fabric can do. Of course it can’t do it alone, It takes a talented lady too!

I had to giggle….I KNOW just what you mean about that dog hair….I have to roll people down with the lint roller when they leave my house. And If I see them arrive and they are wearing black….oh boy…big SIGH.
I LOVE what you did to that chair! Now those little hairs sticking straight out won’t make you cringe everytime you pass by……

What a beautiful awe-inspiring sunset and you caught it at the perfect moment. You would swear the branches were blackened limbs against the backdrop of a blazing inferno.

I had a similar desk chair. It was always covered in cat hair during our pre-dog life. It went to the landfill. I wasn’t so thrifty or nifty back then, but recently I have learned much. Thank You.

Hi, I stumbled upon your blog, and was happy to see your chair cover. It is something that I have been trying to figure out on that exact style I found at Ikea for 14 dollars. But I just didn’t know how to go about it. Thanx, for this inspiring idea.:D I will come by again to see what else you come up with “D
Thanx, Have a Happy Day filled with Smiles!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
