Crabapples

April 26, 2024 at 8:52 am by Claudia

Last night the temperature went down to 31 and there was frost on my car windshield this morning. Tonight? 34. On Saturday things will get back to normal and I think we will have officially turned the corner into Serious Spring.

I can’t wait. My sinuses can’t wait, as well.

I’m going to do some mowing today. Same mower as last year – with the real wheel drive broken. When we can afford to, we’ll replace it. But with Don’s car repairs and some other expenses needing to be dealt with first, we’ll just have to work with the mower as is. We have to mow in smaller increments, but we get it done.

As far as I can tell, we have two different kinds of crabapple trees on the property. You remember the crabapple that was cut down by an overzealous county employee? That was my favorite kind of crabapple and I miss that tree to this day. But I have discovered at least two younger trees that are the same kind as the one we lost. They are now blooming. They’re on the far side of the house.

The blooms are a deep pinkish red. As they begin to open, they turn pink.

The flower is white and pink.

Aren’t they lovely? I’m so happy to have found them. Actually, I found them last year. This year they’re larger and there are a lot more blooms. They bring a smile to my face, which is much needed as I read the news. Enough said. You know what I’m thinking.

There are lots of dandelions on our front lawn which also makes me happy, as bees depend on them in the early spring. And even when we mow, they come back very quickly. Speaking of bees, I’ve been keeping an eye on the catalpa tree where the honey bees often reside and I haven’t seen any so far.

I’m seeing more and more green on some of the trees in the distance. Hurrah! And I’m certainly seeing buds on all of the trees. The catalpas are always the last to leaf out.

Once tonight’s cold temps are a thing of the past, we’ll be saying goodbye to winter for good.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

I’m so happy to hear you found some more crabapple trees! Gorgeous flowers, and I love how the blossoms change colors, ending with that beautiful pink. I remember when you wrote about the trees that were cut down. We’re having cooler weather today, but our highs will be in the low 60s, possibly with a few sprinkles. Happy Friday.

Love your crabapples….always a sign that spring has arrived. Hope it’s the serious kind…lol!

We did a ton of work outside yesterday in preparation for a weekend predicted to be soggy and stormy, but, so far…not a drop. We transplanted a large panicle hydrangea yesterday. It was a beast, but was interfering with a prized evergreen, so it had to be moved. Fingers crossed it adapts to its new home.

I, too, am anxiously awaiting Serious Spring…hopefully, starting soon. Enjoy your day! ;)

Yes…we all have. But…isn’t this what we wait for during the winter? ;)

Your property is so beautiful!! I love seeing your photos – thank you. I live in Illinois and have had to bring potted plants in twice so far because of overnight freezes. I don’t usually buy potted plants so early, but some of the beautiful days we’ve had tricked me into it. I hope you and Don have a lovely weekend!

It’s so easy to be tricked. I certainly have been tricked in the past.

      Stay safe, Jenny.

i am very happy for you that spring has arrived and you can get outside more often. that you have two more crabapple trees blooming is like frosting on a cake, isn’t it? same with dandelions being good for bees (there’s lots of dandelions around here … and hopefully more bees than we’ve seen so far). :)

    thanks for the beautiful photos.

had a very busy, bittersweet day yesterday so am glad to have an easier day today. right now i am enjoying a wonderfully dark, off-and-on rainy morning. we need rain, a lot of it. just too bad it’s happening when my brother and sister-in-law have to drive several hours (hopefully not in a hard rain) and for athletes and attendees at the big track-and-field drake relays going on today and this weekend.

    happy, safe friday to everyone!

Beautiful pictures of your crabapple blossoms. Do the trees bear apples? My husband made crabapple jelly from crabapples he picked from a tree in front of an antique shop in the country. The owner kindly said pick all you want. We took her a jar of the jelly and she was quite surprised how good it was. She had a treasure in her own yard and didn’t even realize it. Enjoy your weekend. We’re supposed to be in double digits next week. Hugs, Elaine

No apples yet. They’re relatively young, though we do have a couple of large trees. Do all crabapple trees produce apples? I’m not sure at all!

      Stay safe, Elaine.

Those crab apple blossoms are just beautiful. I love that all the trees and bushes are in full bloom now. It’s so fleeting so I’ve learned to pay extra attention as I drive around the village. So glad they invested in so many blooming trees to line the medians and neighborhood terraces, what we call the area between the sidewalk and the curb.

The cold has been especially hard for me to take after we had a few 70 degree days a few weeks ago. Earlier this week, I brought two trays of pansies I just bought in from the front porch. The next night though I forgot. I was awake around 2 a.m. and checked my phone. It was 29! Still, in the morning those hardy little buggers were just fine.

Next week’s forecast for this area shows 60’s every day so hopefully we all will be enjoying spring at long last.

    Take care,
    Kay

Very fleeting! You blink an eye and the blossoms are gone.

I have yet to buy my pansies. I think I’ll get them on Monday. The weekends at the nursery are too busy with all the weekenders buying up plants.

      Stay safe.

A local supermarket chain has them here every year, They are big and beautiful and the first sign of spring for me. You have to grab them because they go fast!

Crabapple trees are so beautiful. I had one once that came down in a storm — or rather, enough of it came down that there was no rescuing it. Sigh. But my neighbor has one so at least I get a hit of pink during the season!

It’s warming up here so I hope it is coming your way! Maybe this time it will last!

They seem to multiply around here. I think we had just one when we moved here and I mistakenly thought it was on the neighbor’s property. Now we have at least 7 or 8.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
