Creature Feature

March 3, 2014 at 8:24 am by Claudia

There are several of us living here, you know.

lambchop2

There’s Lamb Chop, who lives in the studio. She’s my muse.

littlelamb

There’s the Lamb with the Party Hat. She hangs out with her pal Lamb Chop. I can hear them whispering up there.

maggieandwayfrum

And, of course, Maggie and Wayfrum, my traveling companions. When not on the road with me, they like to hang out on the bookshelf in the bedroom.

montywithprint

And Monty, who surveys the downstairs from his perch on an old lab stool in the living room.

There are dolls, more lambs, jumping jacks.

Come to think of it, it’s rather crowded here.

And there’s this girl:

scoutina

She runs the whole place.

We managed to avoid all the dire predictions as to snowfall. For once. I am grateful that I don’t have to shovel today. It is very, very cold out there, however, and tonight’s low is going down to 7 below.

You don’t want to see how much we’ve spent on heating oil this year. The mind boggles. And the price just jumped by 40 cents a gallon. Do you think the oil companies know they have us right where they want us?

I escaped my snowy, icy prison and drove over to Tina and Noble’s for lunch yesterday. Good food, good conversation, good friends – I had a lovely time. Not that I don’t love my conversations with Scoutie, but it’s nice to change it up a little.

Besides, she sleeps a lot of the time.

Happy Monday.

I am so glad you were able to get out. Cabin Fever starts to set in after a few weeks. I know because I was confined with a bad sinus infection all one summer and again this fall after the accident.

Cute companions! Scout is, indeed, the queen!

I don’t think we’ll have anything begin to thaw until next week – it looks like we have pretty cold temps for the next several days.

Cute post, Claudia. It’s always special to see a photo of Dame Scout. Where is her tiara? Was it giving her a headache? Has she lent it to you for awhile?
On another subject, are you aware that there is a movie about a frustrated vocal coach? It’s on Netflix, but not on Watch Instantly yet. Here is a link to the trailer. It looks like fun. “In a World…”

You do have a lot of company but…they don’t talk to much do they? And quite frankly, if they do start talking…I’d start worrying! I am glad that you had a non snow event so you could go to lunch! It’s a gloriously frigid day here in Wisconsin…trying to put a positive spin on the weather. Is it working? ;)

Love the pics of all your roommates! I have visions of them all partying at night while you are sleeping and when you leave the house! Dame Scoutie, of course, keeps them in check so that they don’t get too rowdy, or is she the leader in frivolity! So fun!

So happy that you didn’t get the “s” word! But, this horrid cold blows, too. We went shopping for a few things on Thurs. of last week and it was the first time I had left the house in 11 days. This below zero cold and wind makes me clench up, physically as well as mentally, I think! We broke the record on low temp this AM set back in the late 1800’s. woot???
This winter has made me think about the pioneer women and their isolation. I have read accounts of how some truly lost their minds, and I seriously understand that! The every day work and chores that they had to do to keep their homes and raise a family in this cold and snow is beyond what I can even comprehend. Even though we have TVs, phones, internet, etc. ~ cabin fever still sets in.
Stay warm and give Scout a hug or 3. She is such a good companion. And all of your other ‘friends’ fill in all the nooks and crannies quite sweetly as well.
P.S. I just read your post from yesterday, Claudia, and it was beautiful. You bring the phrase “meant to be” to new heights!! And I am so glad you got out of the house yesterday to spend some time with friends. That does help!

I can totally understand those women losing their minds. To be so isolated, dealing with terrible cold and snow, stoking the fire constantly…oh my. If it drives us nuts, think what it did to them!

I think Nature said, “Oh, they have PLENTY there… that’s enough for now.” Glad you got out for a good time with friends too. What did you think of the Oscar wins, Claudia? I so wanted good old Bruce Dern to get one –

Well, I had a feeling that Matthew McC was going to win. I’m not a fan of his, but I haven’t seen this movie. But when actors lose or gain a lot of weight for a role or have a role like Leto’s, Academy voters tend to vote for them. They may be perfectly wonderful in those roles, but even without seeing the film, I knew they would probably win. I loved the young woman who won for 12 Years a Slave – what a gracious speech. And I love Cate Blanchett. Basically, I wasn’t surprised about any of the awards. Truth is, I haven’t seen many of the movies this year.
And yes, it would have been wonderful to see Bruce Dern win.

So disappointed by Best Actor. Not a Matthew McC fan either. To me he seems like a “one-note” guy. Not much range there. And not serious either. Like the stereotype of someone who once heard, “Gee, you’re really good-looking. Have you ever thought about acting?” But ever since Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand tied for Best Actress, I bear in mind that we don’t know the winning margin for any of these categories. So I’ve chosen to believe that Matthew got only one more vote than Bruce Dern. Grin. Strange that “Gravity” won so many other awards [both creative and technical] yet wasn’t Best Picture. Doesn’t make sense. But Best Picture is often a “message” picture, so I wasn’t surprised by “12 Years a Slave.” Oh well, how is it possible to judge pieces of art against each other anyway? Apples and oranges. And why the entertainment field only? In my perfect world we’d see awards for all types of work on TV. “Plumber of the Year” etc. Those are the people I REALLY respect. Whose work I wouldn’t want to have to do myself. My soapbox for today… I get up on it every year after the Oscars. :>)

Glad you got out for some time with friends, this winter makes us all want to hibernate till spring. It just keeps snowing here, with no sign of it letting up any time soon. The sun is shining but it is deceiving, there’s certainly no warming up happening with it.

We got the snow on Saturday – 4 more inches. And then temps dropped below zero again. Will it ever end? Despite the yucky roads on Sunday, we drove to church and went out to lunch anyway. I wonder what’s going on that they raised the price of oil that much? I noticed yesterday when we were out, that gas jumped to $3.85/gal!

I feel the same way every time the propane guy fills the tank. It’s shocking and not like I can go by price — you have to have a contract with the tank and you have to buy your propane from the “tank owner”. YIKES! Then there is the electric bill in the summer — that one is enough to give you a heart attack some months! I’m sure Meredith says the same thing.

On the other hand ……I’ve never had to shovel snow from my driveway —- just had to locate my shingles that one year of many hurricanes. LOL

Your creatures made me smile on a cold and snowy morning. Here in the Piedmont area of NC, we awoke to 14 degrees temps and a blanket of snow. Unheard of in this neck of the woods . . . and in the first week of March, too!! What made me smile even more was the pink sewing box that Lambchop was sitting on. Where did you get it? The reason I ask is because I have one that belonged to my Mom. Of course, yours is in much better shape but that distinctive pink with the flowers on the top . . . priceless.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
