Dad and Mom

September 28, 2011 at 6:00 am by Claudia

Mom and Dad – photo taken 17 years ago in San Diego

Today is my Dad’s 88th birthday. My mother had been scheduled to go home today, on his birthday. Yesterday he got the news that Mom has declined in the last few days (which we all knew) and that she isn’t strong enough to go home. She is being moved to the nursing home side of the facility.

Dad was inconsolable and it broke my heart to hear the despair in his voice. I think the prospect of Mom coming home was the only thing keeping him going. Most of yesterday was spent on the phone with my Dad and my sister.

In a perfect world, my parents would age with dignity and then quietly fade away at a grand old age.

But we all know this is not a perfect world.

I’ll be back later this evening with a post for Reality Shot – be sure to link up if you’re interested. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.

My heart is breaking for your dad. Aging is something we all have to contend with at some point, but it’s just heartbreaking when it’s our parents. Sending a hug his way,

Yes, these will be difficult days for your family dear one – as we’ve been in touch you know my thoughts are already with you all.

Thank you for sharing the sweet photo – how we all wish times like that could last forever – sadly aging can be hard. You all remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Heartbreaking news. My mom just had to tell my 94 year old gramma last month she wouldn’t be going home, but instead moving to the memory unit at the rehab hospital permanantly.

These are the moments of life that make it so excruciatingly REAL. I hope your daddy can find what he needs to continue on…

    hugs,
    cindy

((hugs))) it’s very hard watching folks you love age & get frail.

Been there done that with inlaws – we had a granny flat at our home where they lived until coudln’t anymore. Was one of the hardest things we have done having to help make choices for them & hard for them as their bodies let them down & their minds were sharp

I feel for you going through this, and for your folks.

    Love Leanne

You don’t need to post another reality shot, there is no more reality than this. You and your parents are in my prayers, dear one.

It’s sad, Claudia. Life does have its difficult moments and when we’re living through them, we wonder how we will ever get through them. Sometimes, life is nothing but pain and we have no choice but to endure it. We tell ourselves that this too will pass. Nevertheless, seeing ourselves through these moments is pure hardship. It’s hard on the body because our bodies always react to our emotions and it’s hard on our psyche. I wish I could take your pain away. But, I can’t. Only time can do that. Just stand in there, dear Claudia, and the best thing for you to do for the moment is to take it all one day at a time. Try do do something kind for yourself. You know, just a little something that would bring you joy. Moments like these, we need to be gentle with our “self”. May the Lord carry you gently through all this!

As Motherknitter said..there is no more real than the reality you all are facing.

It’a journey we all travel at one time or another, and it is as different and individual as there are stars. It seems very few get to slip away in total peace. We do what we can and simply love each other.

    Blessings to all of you

Claudia, I know this is very hard and sad that your dad got that news on his birthday. The picture you have shared shows what a wonderful couple they are and hopefully those happier times will make these hard times a little less painful. Although, it’s just a rough road, no getting around it. I will be thinking of you all. Ann

That sweet photo reminds me of how my parents are at this time of their life… on the go, living and loving life. My deepest wish is that I could stop time for them.

I’m so sorry to hear about what your parents are going through at this time. They both must be so heartbroken. I know that your heart has been breaking too, sweet friend.

    Sending big hugs your way~

Claudia, I am SO sorry. It’s very hard to watch your parents decline, and your poor dad! I am thinking of all of you and sending my love. If you need to come down with the dogs, let me know. I can come babysit them.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
