Day One Hundred Sixty

August 20, 2020 at 9:19 am by Claudia

Overgrown, late summer. I love this stage, when everything is looking kind of wild and a little bit past its prime.

Our mornings have been very, very cool this week. It feels like fall. Such a strange thing to happen in mid-August, which is usually very hot and humid. But everything is topsy-turvy nowadays, we’ve had hot and humid most of the summer, so we’re getting a little break now. Perfect weather to mow, which is what we’ll be doing later this morning. Don is at the grocery store right now; I’m writing this post rather quickly so I can help him wipe everything down when he returns home.

I’m up far too late in the evenings during the Democratic Convention, but it’s worth it. Barack Obama’s speech last night was one of the best (in a long list of bests) that I’ve ever heard. It was powerful, hopeful, and chilling at the same time. He didn’t mince words. This is what we’ve been waiting for him to say and he chose the perfect moment in which to say it. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you to find it online. We are fighting for our democracy and if we don’t elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we will see it disappear.

Kamala Harris’ speech was excellent.

I should finish Hamnet  today and then I’ll move on to James Lee Burke’s newest. He’s a mystery/police procedural writer who is, at heart, a poet. I love every one of his Dave Robicheaux books and I’ve read them all.

That’s all for now, my friends. I have to wrap this up and get moving – again, sleeping too late because I’m up too late!

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

I very much got that Barack Obama is WORRIED. And Kamala’s speech was the bomb; I love how she spoke to the uncertainty we’re all feeling. “It’s a lot.” Amen.

Wow, do I envy your cool weather. Send some my way.

I’m feeling so “Fall” but I tried a pumpkin dish yesterday, and … nope; not yet.

Are you two no longer doing curbside pickup but instead are doing your own shopping inside the store, and also more frequently? Is it okay to ask? I just try to get a ‘gauge’ on these things with people, always wondering exactly what I should be doing, too.

Don favors going to the store and this time he went by himself. I went with him the time before that. It’s very safe there, everyone is wearing masks, and we go early enough that it isn’t crowded. We just feel more in control when we’re actually in the store, we can make last minute substitutions, we can put things back, etc. When you have to rely on your list, the substitution possibilities are quite limited or not possible.

      Stay safe!

enjoy that cooler weather and what sounds like a good book!

the few police-procedural kind of books i’ve read were by henning mankell (with the main character being detective kurt wallender) and i enjoyed them. still working on that agatha christie book. i am not a fan of short stories, but i am not giving up on it or getting reading back into my daily life!

safe shopping, sanitizing and mowing to you and don, then i hope you get to call the rest of the day your own and do whatever you want!

ps: your description of those flowers fits me: “kind of wild” (my pixie-style hair that i cut at home in about five minutes and my mood for when 4:00 pm and friday can’t come soon enough at work) and “a little bit past its prime” (how very, very much older than 62 i feel some days after being out in the world that is so crazy, stressful and dirty-feeling right now).

Yes, I’m not a real short story fan, either. I like to be in it for the long haul.

Today is a day that I feel more than a little bit past my prime. Mowing was exhausting for some reason and I’m reminded that I don’t have quite the stamina I used to.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

yes … the long haul! if i like the characters and story by page 20, i want another 200 pages to read and enjoy!

hope you have been taking it easy once the mowing was done and don’t have any pain. and sleep well!

hey … i apologize if i offended anyone (especially those my age (62) or older) by words in my last paragraph today. i was most definitely not saying people 62 and older are “past their prime”. not at all! i was just trying to say i feel that way a lot and it has a wee bit to do with my job and a whole lot to do with covid-19 and people not wearing masks or social distancing … not being older.

hope you all have a nice night and stay safe!

Oh you didn’t offend anyone! Somedays I feel that way, for sure. On others, I feel vibrant and powerful.

As a Canadian, I loved Obama’s speech last night. You Americans have an elephant in your living room and Obama was willing to call that elephant by name.

Yes but he was only willing (being very careful about it) to do it now. He has spoken out before, but not to this extent. I think he knew that he had to be strategic about timing. And he finally laid it on the line. Very grateful for that.

      Thanks, Brenda. Stay safe.

What a speech it was!! One could tell it was sincere and from the heart. It is what we have missed the past nearly 4 years as the idiot doesn’t have one.

Sounds like Don has been cooking up a storm this week!!! Fun! Glad he is feeling better. We have another beautiful day as well. Just watched the news and they said upper 80’s to low 90’s starting this weekend. Since it is August, guess it is expected. The past many days have certainly been a wonderful reprieve.

Hope mowing went well and you are ready for some reading this aft! Take care.

He’s feeling much better, especially the past few days. Gorgeous here. I don’t know what the longterm forecast is, but we’re sure enjoying it while we can. We were both exhausted after mowing. Turns out we each took a little nap which is good because we’ve been up later than usual watching the convention.

      Stay safe, Chris!

Oh yes…Pres. Obama’s speech was terrific…really speaking truth about the current occupant of the White House, and what needs to be done. Most importantly, his calling on all of us to do our part. What a night! After his and Kamala Harris’ speech…I felt sincere hope.

Hope the lawn mowing goes well. Enjoy your cooler days. Unfortunately, ours are heating up again…which will be fine as long as that blasted humidity stays away. Stay safe! ;)

He was emotional, too, and we needed that.

Mowing went well but we’re really tired out. We’ve been up later than usual with the convention!

      Stay safe, Donna.

We’ve been watching the whole two hours every night too. The speeches have been excellent and even more enjoyable without all the superfluous applause from the delegates every few minutes. Makes each speech concise and to the point. And President Obama’s was pitch perfect. I laughed this morning when I found out that Trump had begun all-caps hate-tweeting even before Obama was finished speaking. And he’s been told once again to hand over his taxes. Donald is not having a good week.

We are enjoying cool weather in the seventies – gorgeous sunny days and no humidity. Maybe since the start of the school year will be very different this fall, the annual start-of-the-school-year heat and humidity that always accompanies those first days won’t happen this year. I’d like an entire September of this kind of weather, please. This year, our local school district is offering parents a choice: they can send their kids to school or have them learn remotely. I thought that was pretty enlightened compared to those who have been telling parents “send your kids and let’s just wait and see what happens.”

    Take care.

I think they should do it this way from now on. I usually get bored by conventions – all the hoopla seems to be too much. But this, this is great.

Yes, and Steve Bannon has been arrested. Not a good day for the Orange Man.

I’m so glad they’re offering a choice – much appreciated by parents, I bet.

      Stay safe, Kay.

Both those speeches took my breath away.

And yes, I’ve been noticing cool mornings and evenings, warm days. Definitely the sign of fall. I just got north — it’s super windy and while I’m sure it’s hot in the sun it’s just windy-pleasant on the porch. Feeling a little safe and isolated and it’s mighty nice!

Those speeches, and the people who gave them, are fantastic!

We dvr CBS Sunday Morning. This past Sunday, their lead story took our breath away. It’s about the President’s Secret Powers. Watch it. And be very afraid.

On a much, much brighter note: We are enjoying our garden! Some plants have stopped
flowering, but they are still very leafy and green. We had our cool weather, here in Minnesota,
but it is warming up quickly. The tomatoes have been wonderful, this year. I am hoping that
summer will hang on for a long while………

Yes, someone else told me about it. I just can’t go there right now. I already know far too much!

I, too, am not ready to say goodbye to summer. I need it to hang around for another month.

      Stay safe, Susan.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
