Day Three Hundred Seventy-Three

March 21, 2021 at 10:24 am by Claudia

Yesterday was lovely; warmer, sunny, and a definite bit of spring in the air. We sat on the Funky Patio for quite a while. My shoulders dropped as I felt the warmth of the sun on my face. Today promises to be even warmer. I walked up and down the driveway several times and then I noticed that my day lilies in the bed underneath the living room window have emerged. They are always the first signs of spring for me and the easiest to see as that bed has no leaf cover over the winter. I know there are signs of life in the other beds, but I deliberately leave them under cover until mid-April or so in order to protect the young plants. Spring weather can change on a dime here.

Anyway, that made me happy.

Two egg cups – one lustre ware, one from Prague – covered in little cozies that I knitted a few years back. The pattern was from Little Cotton Rabbits on Etsy. She makes the most adorable patterns, so lovely and so whimsical. I think Don was away at the time – maybe in Boston? Or La Jolla? Who knows? But I remember sitting in my chair during the winter, working on them.

Gosh, I love their faces. So, so sweet.

We’ve only got six more episodes of A French Village. I would say this brilliant French series is in the top three of any series I have watched in my life. It’s stunning. I have learned so much. Everything about it is impeccably done. I’ll truly be sad when it’s over. (I may have to watch it again.)

And I’m about to finish The Sentence is Death  by Anthony Horowitz.  He’s such an inventive writer. Now I have to figure out what I want to read next.

Other than that, I plan to work on the new puzzle and spend some time outside today. Huzzah for warmer weather!

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

I looked up “A French Village” on IMDb and it seems to be in French. I didn’t see that there were subtitles. (I’m not a fan of them anyway)
So, I have a question… Do you and Don speak French fluently enough to watch the episodes? My husband and I are always searching out WWII movies, series, shows and this one looks intriguing, but we wouldn’t be able to handle it if it is in French.

    Thanks for your reply.

There are subtitles. Indeed, there are subtitles on every foreign series or film we come across. IMDb wouldn’t necessarily tell you that, but Amazon Prime would. We don’t mind subtitles at all. Our experience is that after the first five minutes, you don’t even realize they’re there.

I speak French, but not fluently enough to understand everything by a long shot. Don does not speak French.

You will miss out on an incredible series if you don’t watch because of the subtitles – just saying!

      Stay safe, Karen.

sounds lovely except for the wind and almost-running-out-of-a-favorite-show parts. :) i am not a gardener (never really had a good place for one as an adult), but i enjoy the results of other people’s hard work, am so happy to see buds on the tree in front of my parents’ home and feel better for being out in nature … so i can imagine how happy you (who loves to garden) must feel to see first plants popping up. especially after such a tough year and extra-snowy winter. huzzah for sure!

your little bunny egg cup cozies are so sweet. and i always enjoy and appreciate seeing what’s on the bookshelves. thanks for all you share.

hope you enjoy the new puzzle. is this the “darker, moodier” one you mentioned a couple days ago?

i got a few things done around here last night before i conked out and a couple more this morning. nothing “big”, nothing sewn yet and maybe no one else would notice them, but still pleasing to me. now i am off to the hardware store before getting to visit with some family members.

hope you have a nice day.

Yes. This one is darker and moody, so it’s challenging!

      I love the hardware store!

      Stay safe, Kathy.

Claudia….when you and Don finish watching the French Village I would be interested in your impression of the final three segments. I too feel this is the best mini series in a long long time. I did not mind the subtitles and prefer them to dubbing. I will watch again at some point. Now I am left wondering what to watch. Have to go back in time and dig up some of my early likes. Well, I am too restless to stay indoors….going to drag my husband for a walk (masked) to a little park nearby. We will be planning (fingers crossed) a visit to see our sons and grandkids soon. They haven’t been vaccinated so we most likely will be masked around them. Haven’t worked out the details. Doug and I take rides but this will be a long one and frankly we do not use public restrooms now so….Yesterday I managed to wash some windows and for a couple of hours they appeared sparkling clean. This morning I saw the streaks…so much for perfection. Have a safe and good day.

I can never wash my windows without streaks! Never! And because it’s so windy around here, they get dirty again very quickly.

I can’t stand to watch something that’s been dubbed. I can’t concentrate because I’m watching the lips of the person speaking. Subtitles don’t bother us at all.

Tonight we start the final season, so I’ll let you know what I think about those episodes when we finish.

      Stay safe, Maria.

Just a side note…..Have you and Don ever taken a ride to Lake Minnewaska near New Paltz? I worked at Cliff House the summer of my freshmen year. I think the main houses were destroyed in a fire but the park is beautiful and the mountain lake is incredible. I miss upstate and the antiques in Hudson, the theater in Rhinebeck, and the gallery at Bard….Woodstock and the endless roads that don’t all lead to highways and developments. We never thought we would end up on Long Island but my husband has become an avid racer…Sailboats and we have to be near the water. He is calling me now…once again. Have a great day.

We’re still humid with a lot of clouds where I am in SoCalif; we almost reached a sunny 80 degrees this afternoon, yet it was 39 degrees about 4am (and indeed, the daily March wind is still cool). For the past two evenings, when I go outside with the dog before bedtime, I can smell the citrus blossoms on the breeze after nightfall of several hours (I have, at the base of the hillside, a couple of producing orange trees right now [mandarin and navel {and a meyer lemon}] but I’m also surrounded, in my town, with vast avocado groves [avocado is of course a fruit and, although it seems crazy to me, their bloom is as citrusy-fragrant as the oranges and lemons]); it’s when I’m grateful to live in an agricultural valley, to look forward to ‘my’ sign of ‘Spring has arrived’, the fresh-clean “heady” citrus scent in the air. For some reason, it doesn’t bother my allergies.

It’s so intriguing how, in diff parts of this big ‘ol USA, there are so many springtime indicators totally unique to where in the country we live. For my husband having grown up in the Midwest, he always remembers his mother’s lilac bushes coming into flower (AND heavenly scent) in May of the years, whereas I don’t recall ever seeing a lilac in my entire life (I know they need winter cold [and that’s not SoCalif]). I’ve always wanted to see the cherry trees in bloom in Washington DC, which I think is earliest April. (Like, when I’d hoped to take a trip in 2019 [but then my husband didn’t retire after all that year], I’d wanted to hit DC for a visit precisely at April 1st; I’m not giving up the dream to see all that bossom-y pastel beauty in person, just am on pause for when we can hopefully plan again post-Covid!!)

I’ve been to DC but never during cherry blossom time. Traverse City, in northern Michigan, is known for its cherry blossoms, as well.

I’ve just looked up ‘A French Village’ and realised that it has two of my favourite actors from another excellent French series ‘Spiral’, a gritty police drama set in Paris

They are Audrey Fleurot – Hortense Larcher and Thiery Godard- Raymond Schwartz.

Gardener’s World started on Friday evening so hopefully I can feel inspired to start planting soon.

    Happy Sunday

You’re the second person who has mentioned Spiral to us! I wonder if it’s on Prime? I’d sure love to see it.

I read that GW has started! I going to see if it’s on Britbox now.

Audrey Fleurot made a guest appearance on Call My Agent (Ten Percent) another series that we loved.

      Stay safe, Dee Dee!

your bunnies are so cute — love their ears, face expressions — we have had sun today w/little wind, hard to believe that our mean winter left so quietly — I dare not say it is over b/c we’ve had some really cold Mar/Apr. BUT enjoying our good fortune today. stay healthy, safe

Yes, I always knock on wood when I say things like “Spring is here!” because I know we can still get slapped with snow.

I have a friend who, several years ago, thought it was a good idea if they’d fly from SoCalif to ‘Cape Cod’, beat the summer-break folks, get there (and be gone) before Memorial Day (so, this was early-to-mid May, probably more like ‘early’) and, wow, were they surprised, because Nantucket got hit with a not-too-usual-that-late-in-the-year (they said, ‘just our luck!’) BIG blizzard/storm (‘nor-easter’ [I don’t know how you spell that]), they were stuck in a pricey hotel (ouch); couldn’t get off the island for a few days!

We had a lovely weekend with temps in the lower 60’s both days, AND sunshine! Today it got really windy though. ugh. It was our daughter’s BD yesterday, 1st day of Spring, and today was the wee-one’s 1st BD!!!! They did a “smash cake” with her on a live Facebook feed, so that was fun. Next Fri we are 2 weeks post our 2nd shot, so we will get to actually be with her on Saturday!! Can’t wait! Will be fun to do presents with her. I can’t believe it has been a year!! We missed so many 1sts with her because of this crazy year. Here is to hoping it will be better going forward.

Hope you had a nice day! Take care.

It was 59 degrees here yesterday and 63 today! Just glorious. I sat outside on the front porch this morning with my cuppa tea. Put my face to the sun, eyes closed and just soaked it all in for a few minutes. Birds were chirping all around, robins chasing each other…love this so much every spring. Clouds roll in tomorrow and then looks like much cooler temps (only 40s and 50s) and lots of rain through the entire extended forecast. Boo! But like you said, the weather can turn on a dime. We could still easily have some snow.

Brian and I were interested in watching A French Village, but decided not to because of the subtitles. That’s something neither one of us have ever been able to get past and find it distracting. Oh well. We’ve been watching something very lighthearted and fun instead…Kim’s Convenience on Netflix.

    xoxo

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
