So close and yet so far!
I added several more pieces yesterday, but it was a slog. After a while, the lines and curves drove me nuts and I stopped. But while I was making coffee this morning, I added two more pieces, just like that. I’d love to finish this today, but who knows?
It’s another gray day here in the Hudson Valley. Lots of gray, lots of snow, lots of cabin fever. But we actually did remember it was Valentine’s Day, though it took us about ten minutes to register today’s date – every day is the same, isn’t it? Anyway, we wished each other a happy Valentines Day. Done.
Thought Don is considering making a Valentines Day sugar-free apple pie. Hmmmm.
We are half-heartedly looking for vaccine appointments, but weather is a major issue for this week and the days we would feel safe traveling add up to exactly three. So we may just wait until later in the week and hope to find something for the following week.
I’m reading Mrs. Tim Carries On, but I must admit that I’ve been consumed by the puzzle and haven’t read as much as usual. I hope to grab some time to read during the day today.
Yesterday was a tough day for both of us. We were very down. Today is better. We just try to stay positive and we’re mostly successful. But every once in a while, we aren’t, and we let ourselves feel what we feel and then start fresh the next day.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Valentines Day. I remember many years when I thought I should have a valentine and didn’t and therefore felt left out. I remember many years when I had grown and didn’t care about that anymore and was perfectly fine being exactly where I was. It’s one of those holidays that can, depending on where you are in your life, heighten a feeling of loneliness. I’m happy that I have Don in my life, of course, but this day isn’t a big deal for us and never has been.
I’d rather celebrate love every day and that means love in all its forms.
Stay safe.
Happy Sunday.
kathy in iowa says
you’ll get there and i bet it’s today!
i’d definitely have to slide some white paper between the puzzle and that wooden board to more easily see those dark squiggly pieces.
and after seeing this puzzle, i’m going to look for more of saul steinberg’s art.
good luck with the weather. being ‘stuck’ indoors sounds good when you have enjoyable things to do and, especially, someone you love. homemade apple pie (especially when a bit warm) is a bonus!
i agree … show love every day!
6 degrees below zero here (ugh) so i’ve been reminding myself over and over that it’s 36 days until the first day of spring. i’ll spend 11 more of them quarantining, so then it’s barely three weeks until spring officially begins! :)
going to do some easy (super-light) things around here, then finish that ribbed hat and start another one.
have a sweet, safe day, everyone!

Glad you’re home quarantining. Stay out of the cold!
I finished the puzzle around 2 pm.
Stay safe, Kathy.
Marilyn Schmuker says
It’s funny how you can search and search for a puzzle piece and you’d swear it’s missing. Then walk away and when you come back to it with fresh eyes, there it is!
I bet you finish it today.
We don’t do much for Valentine’s day either. Usually a card, but we aren’t bothering with even that this year. Apple pie sounds good though.
Waiting for better weather to schedule the vaccine sounds like a good plan. No point in risking your life on bad roads.
Stay safe
Claudia says
I did finish it mid-afternoon, Marilyn.
Stay safe!
Regula says
Puzzles are very very addictive. Glady. there are no side effects. We all know dark days. I felt awful on Thursday and Friday. But there is hope! All the best. Regula
Claudia says
That’s the kind of addiction I can handle, Regula!
Stay safe.
Judy+Clark says
Happy Valentines Day you two!
Claudia says
Happy Valentines Day to you, dear Judy. Remembering your Valentine today – dear John,
Stay safe!

I’ve never been a big Valentine fan but I do enjoy doing a little something for the Grands. They are coming by later for a driveway visit and they made something for GrannyB and myself. I have bags of some little fun goodies and some candy for them. So this is going to be a nice moment in an otherwise rainy day and pandemic world. I’m hoping to hear soon about vaccines but here all roads lead to my health dept and no phone calls and well we are just stuck waiting. Enjoy your day and I hope the puzzle gets finished. Hugs!
Claudia says
So fun to celebrate with the grandchildren, Linda! I’m assuming they’re all well and your daughter has recovered?
Stay safe!
Linda Mackean says
Yes they have been quarantined for weeks and Sara is well. We all wore masks and kept social distancing. So good to put my eyes on them! Happy!
Claudia says
Glad to hear it!
Ellen D. says
You will finish that puzzle today, I think!
Hugs and apple pie wishes to you and Don today!
Claudia says
I did. Very satisfying to put that last piece in!
Stay safe, Ellen!

At my age it is all about family. The kids, my miracles and what we went through to get them, and the five grands…that is why I love life. They FaceTimed and thanked me for cards and gifts…I love cards…and the special cookies they made for me and dropped off at the door. Florida is moving along…one day at a time…I was eager to watch the latest interview with Louise Penny…you tube on my television…just recently recorded during COVID…looking forward to her next book this year. I read over 300 books last year and hers and the one about the lady librarians on horses and the Blue people of Kentucky my two favorites. Yes I enjoyed Hamnet also…have a good day and hope you can get the vaccine soon…maybe there will be money for that and the stimulus now that the trial is ended. Prayers
Claudia says
Thanks so much, Brenda.
Stay safe!
Debbie says
We started our Valentine’s Day in line for my husband to get his second vaccine shot. While waiting I was reading the last few pages of Winter Solstice! I didn’t want it to end. I want to hear how they fix up the little cottage…and how it feels in the spring.
I hope you can get an appointment soon…I don’t think I will be getting mine for a few more months. I’ll be home working on a jigsaw puzzle. Stay warm and healthy!
Debbie
Claudia says
I didn’t want that book to end, either. I felt the same way about the cottage!
Stay safe, Debbie.
Chris K in WI says
We have never been big V Day people here. I always did something for the kids, and this year the grand received a bag o’ goodies via a porch drop off. We haven’t done cards for each other since the first few years we were married. In fact, we used to stop in the store at the card counter around VD and each find a card we would pick for the other and read it, and come home $5 or more dollars ahead!! I think if you don’t live it every day, one day a year likely won’t be enough.
Yes, it was another downer day yesterday due to the idiot, but it is time to truly let it go now. Perhaps someone will finally find the guts to actually take him to a real court where he might not be surrounded with his cult members. Who knows. But I am beyond ready to look ahead.
It is 2:30 and still -2*. No chance of even hitting zero today. Really tired of this, too. Hope you are enjoying your day, by either working on your puzzle, or reading. I just finished re-reading the first Miss Read book, Village School. About to move on to #2, Village Diary. Such easy and quiet reading. Simple times seem to be my lifeline lately. Take care.
Claudia says
It seemed like McConnell was making the case for criminal prosecution. Fingers crossed.
I read Village School but I haven’t read any others, yet. I have one of her books in my TBR pile. It’s cold here and we have a heck of a lot more snow coming this week. Yuck.
Stay safe, Chris.

I had plenty of those days! Back in the 80s a group of us (men and women) had a group called SPIES (Single People in Emotional Stress — or Emotional Sewer, depending on the day). One year we had a Blue Valentine party, complete with Tom Waits music and cards for each other. It got us through! Rick makes dinner (I do dessert) and I make him a “yearbook” (this year it is mostly paintings — my poetry muse is in quarantine). It seems special this year because with all from last year, we are closer than ever. You’re right (and we do) — celebrate love each day because more than ever, it’s to be cherished.
I hope you get your apple pie!
Claudia says
You and Rick are a happy couple, Jeanie!
My apple pie is cooling on Stella!
Stay safe.
Donnamae says
Yeah….,we really don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day either. We did make a big deal when our kids were small, but, I believe in celebrating love, everyday.
I was disappointed in yesterday, but I expected it. I’m holding out for the criminal trials!
Hope you enjoy your apple pie! Stay warm…and safe! ;)
Claudia says
Me too. I expect legal action on a number of fronts shortly.
Apple pie is cooling on Stella’s shelf.
Stay safe, Donna!

I developed bad reactions to my second COVID Vaccine shot. About 18 hours after I received the vaccine, a bit past midnight, I woke up with a high fever (near 101) and body aches. I couldn’t close my hands into a fist. I’ve been out of it for two and a half days, feeling like I was hit by a truck and the flu atthe same time. I finally feel normal this morning, with my temp back to normal.
Good job on the puzzle, as I read the comments and you said you finished it. Have fun with your next puzzle.
Daughter made sourdough pancakes with cooked cinnamon apples for breakfast….akin to a deconstructed apple pie! Hope you get one!
Claudia says
So sorry to hear of your bad reaction, Wendy. Very happy you’re feeling better!
Stay safe.
