We woke to the news of John Prine’s death from COVID-19. Needless to say, this is a sad and quiet household this morning. This damned virus is taking so many people.
If you’ve never listened to John Prine, listen to Hello in There, and Angel from Montgomery for starters. Then listen to When I Get to Heaven on his latest album, The Tree of Forgiveness, which is on our turntable and has been for a few days. With those three songs, you’ll know his heart, his compassion, his fight for the underdog, and his quirky and wonderful sense of humor.
You are in Heaven now, John Prine. Rest in Peace.
More egg cups.
A rooster from California Pottery (with original sticker), more Walking Ware, two dogs holding up an egg cup, a bunny rabbit, a duck, a pig with an egg cup on his back, cottage ware, a wood/porcelain egg cup (from my mom), a chick emerging from an egg (also from Mom), a pig getting ready to dine on an egg (from Tiffany), two tiny chicks on a teeter-totter, Mama and baby, a square cup from Prague (Don got it for me when he was there), a beautiful flowered egg cup from France, a goose pulling an egg cup cart, a little chick.
More tomorrow.
We watched the Finale of Schitt’s Creek last night and the special that followed. I’ll miss it so. I woke up thinking about it and the message it sends of inclusivity and community. I’m tempted to start from the beginning and watch the entire series again. Thank you, Dan Levy and Eugene Levy. What a gift you’ve given us.
We cleared two more beds yesterday. My back is complaining a bit, but I am taking it more slowly this year. That has helped. And Don has helped, as well. There may be a trip to the storage facility today for cushions, Adirondack chairs, etc. We’ll see.
Stay home. Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.
Dottie in MD says
I was so sorry to hear of his death this morning. Had been praying for his recovery. Such a talented man. This is a terrible disease and the whole thing is being managed so ineptly by The Great Orange Man and crew. Except for Dr Fauci who I love!
Claudia says
It’s shameful. So many people are dying who might not have had Trump acted in January. Thanks, Dottie. Stay safe.
Linda says
Yes we heard about his passing this an on NPR
There are no words for this virus
When will every state shelter in place?
For us there may not be a trip to the nursery as much as I would love it
We are not leaving home just to Whole Foods and home
We went yesterday and stocked up hopefully for two weeks
There is no delivery and the local shops the delivery dates are far out
Good thing we are readers!
Claudia says
There is absolutely no excuse for not sheltering in place in EVERY state. It’s mind boggling.
Stay safe, Linda!
Janet K. says
Hi Claudia, there was a wonderful tribute to John Prine on MSNBC this morning. He was beloved by many. Praying November will give us the true light at the end of the tunnel. Prayers go out to all who have been touched by this horrible virus. Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors when you can.
Claudia says
I will. You too, Janet.
writingasjoe says
Sad here, too. My facebook feed this morning is filled with videos of John Prine.
These are difficult times.
Claudia says
Beyond difficult. Stay safe.
Donnamae says
I was so sorry to hear of John Prine’s passing. We have lost so many other people already, when will this end?
I’ve been upset since yesterday, seeing the lines of people in Milwaukee waiting to vote. Made me sick to my stomach, that they would have to endure that, just to exercise their constitutional right to vote. It is not right! It is not ethical!
Your egg cups are a welcome relief…thank you for that. Congrats on the yard work…that is no small feat. My yard work is progressing slowly, but then I’m not in any real rush. Yes…I’d like to have our gardens all cleaned out, but our weather is turning colder over the next 10 days. So…I think I’ll just take my time…and make it last longer.
Stay safe and stay well everybody! ;)
Claudia says
It made me ill. What the F is wrong with the Courts? No one should have to risk their life to vote.
Stay safe.
kathy in iowa says
i am glad you and don do things that bring happiness and a comfort that some routines (like bringing out the adirondack chairs and working on your gardens) go on, not stopped by all the sad, scary and weird things happening in the world right now. some things must obviously be done differently right now for safety reasons, but otherwise … glad you seek joy and carry on!
i am glad and very grateful to be home today. there’s a place less than two miles from where i work that is quite similar to my work setting and they have 20 confirmed cases of coronavirus. given that proximity, there is a strong likelihood that some visiting helpers that go there also have been or will be where i work. feel like it’s just a matter of time …
praying …
sad to hear about john prine and so many others. hope listening to his music helps you and don.
sorry i don’t have a way to share the image here, but will try to describe something someone posted online … a note written by a younger child that said “to coronavirus – you destroyed my birthday. you are the f-word!” ditto, kid, on that last line. ditto!
hope everyone is safe, well and has what they (you) need. plus treats. now is a good time for some treats.
kathy in iowa
Chris K in Wisconsin says
That is a very frightening thing, kathy. WHEN will they finally let you and your fellow co-workers stay home??
I agree with needing treats. I have given in. Completely. In fact I had a piece of chocolate at 10:35 this morning. It was delicious and I enjoyed it!!!! I recommend treats to everyone!
kathy in iowa says
hi, chris k in wisconsin …
our governor said she talked with dr. fauci and he seems to think her current orders are “functionally like” a “shelter in place” order. she ordered schools, bars and restaurants to close earlier and just this week ordered malls, lodges, etc. to close, but many other places still have the option to stay open. a “shelter in place” order would remove that option, turning a recommendation to stay home into a requirement and we would have to close. i pray she gives that order, but doubt it will happen. there are now over 1100 confirmed cases and 26 people have died from coronavirus. what will it take?!?
i am afraid to go to work. i miss my family very much. and i certainly will not vote for our governor after this (and didn’t when she ran for office).
so many things have changed and postponed in such a short time, including primaries, etc. as they should … health and safety must come first … so i don’t understand the thinking of the two courts that made people in your state stand in lines to vote yesterday during a pandemic.
ugh!
your willpower is stronger than mine, for sure, to wait until 10:35 and then limit yourself to one piece of chocolate! :)
hope your day is easy and good and you have lots of photos of your sweet granddaughter.
be safe and well!

also, though it took a long time, my boss now appreciates the severity of the situation and finally cut hours (as of monday last week). i am grateful for that … hopefully that means less risk.

Claudia says
She should do even more than that, Kathy. She missed the ball on this one.
kathy in iowa says
i agree …
thanks, claudia.

Claudia says
I am sick that you have to go in, Kathy. To have this fear hanging over you is just plain wrong. Your boss should be fired from her position. She is risking the lives of her employees.
Stay safe, Kathy.
kathy in iowa says
thank you, claudia.
it took her a while to see the severity of the situation, but i think my boss is now doing what she can. i know she’s not getting support from the higher-ups about the coronavirus situation or anything else (they are off-site and not very director-y). been that way as long as i’ve been there … many years. lots more i could say, but will leave it at this: i am only still there because i believe God has me there for the people. and i completely understand why the navy’s captain crozier sent out his letter.
i hope he heals quickly and gets whatever job he wants.
thanks again, claudia. i very much appreciate your support!

kathy, Did I just hear that your Gov is doing a “poll” (seriously??) of the people of Iowa re: the shelter at home order? Did you call in to cast your vote? We can’t make this stuff up!!
kathy in iowa says
what?!? a poll for the governor about whether or not we should have a “shelter in place” order?!?
she is ridiculous.
that is news to me. i will check into it and call in, if that’s possible.
thanks very much for letting me know, chris!
hope you and your family are well!

Claudia, thanks again for sharing the egg cups. There are a couple of my favorites in the posting today!!
It is a cloudy day today, which sort of matches my mood. After 76* yesterday, it is supposed to go down to the 40’s and 50’s for the next 10+ days. Hopefully, at least some of those days will be sunny. That always helps.
Hope you get to your storage unit and are able to get your chairs and cushions out so you can start using them soon! That would be fun.
Claudia says
Cloudy here, too, and rain/wind on the way for tomorrow. Stay safe.
jeanie says
I saw about John Prine last night before I went to bed on my newsfeed. He fought hard — I was hoping he would make it. Indeed, a sad day for those of us who loved his music.
Your egg cups — again — are wonderful. I loved that sweet goose pulling the cart. But they are all so dear. That little pig made me smile, too. How fun to revisit them this year!
I got the herb bed cleaned out yesterday and the yard sticks picked up, a few plants taken outside that will be able to withstand the cold weather expected later this week. Today I’ll get the lettuce in. Some hyacinths have popped and the mini-daffs so bright with their sunshine yellow trumpets. It’s a good day. Be well.
Claudia says
Glad to know you got some things done outdoors, Jeanie. Stay safe.
Connie says
I cried thru the last episode schitts creek and the 1 hour special. I’ll miss that show so much. Definitely watching it all again some day.
Claudia says
I am so sad. Stay safe, Connie.

Hi,
I was lucky enough to see John Prine in concert in Salt Lake City. He was preforming with The Cowboy Junkies. They have turned out to be one of my favorite groups ever.
Take Care,
Kaye
Claudia says
Don has seen him in concert twice. He’s very sad today, Kaye. Stay safe!
Cara (S. FL) says
I really like The Cowboy Junkies– interesting that they performed w/ John Prine.
I was so sorry to hear we lost him. Poor man, he had a lot of recent health problems and this Wuhan virus was apparently the last straw. So unfortunate he is gone.
On a more upbeat note,,I’m enjoying your eggcup pictures.
Best to everyone.
Claudia says
More importantly, he beat cancer – twice. That he was brought down by COVID-19 breaks my heart. Stay safe.
Deborah says
John Prine’s death is so sad.
Claudia says
Very sad. Stay safe, Deborah.
Jane Krovetz, NC says
My husband and I learned of John Prine’s death last night as we sat on our back deck, ready to go in to bed. We spent the next hour out there playing and singing some of our favorite songs of his. He will be sorely missed!
Claudia says
He will, indeed. Stay safe, Jane.

Bonnie Raitt’s album (1977), “Sweet Forgiveness”. On my living room floor, laying on my tummy, elbows propped, memorizing every word of every song on that LP, having no knowledge of John Prine but loving his song and his words of ‘Angel from Montgomery’. And this from him, pure poetry, searing into your being:
How the hell can a person
Go on to work in the morning
Come home in the evening
And have nothing to say
Yes, heavy hearts today. And we know it’s going to keep happening, which makes the load of grief even heavier. This damn epidemic.
Claudia says
So sad. Thanks, Vicki. Stay safe.

Claudia, enjoy your photos very much. Don and I haven’t gone shopping in over 3 weeks. Why do we seem to run out of EVERYTHING when we don’t/not supposed to go out? I haven’t slept for 2 nights just anticipating going to our local Kroger on Senior Friday morning. We haven’t seen the final Schitts Creeks. I want to save those episodes for a special day. It took us a couple of episodes before we were hooked! Love it and will miss it, and why do some crappy shows stay going for years? Boy, I need to sleep tonight, getting testy these days, but enjoy working outdoors and daffodils. Take care.
Claudia says
Stay safe and take precautions, Penny.
Marilyn says
There is plenty of blame to go around concerning the pandemic. Congress is saying The World Health Organization allowed China to give out lower numbers of death and people with the virus. Italy and the United States did stop flights from China in January. Unbelievable some officials did not like that at all. Hope your back feels better. Rest in peace John Prine.
Marilyn
Claudia says
WHO does not work that way. They don’t lie about disease statistics. They are not political. Trump, however, is trying to politicize a pandemic. Of course he is. WHO responded to Trump’s attack with facts, something Trump has been ignoring from the start.
It’s appalling that this has become a talking point generated by Trump and his supporters. Trump is trying to blame China and WHO for his own lack of action. Trump has known about COVID-19 since SEPTEMBER.
Stay safe.
Kay Nickel says
OMG! John Prine. I am glad I heard it from you. How sad. I thought he was recovering. So hard to lose him.
It is good you can get out and do some work. I am so lucky to be enjoying beautiful weather.
Stay safe.
Claudia says
You too, Kay.
Kay says
It is sickening to think of all the good people suffering and dying because this country was not prepared. What a legacy John Prine has left.
Today we found out our youngest and his girlfriend voted yesterday. It was their first foray out of their apartment in almost a month that didn’t involve the grocery store. Guess we did good with the “civic responsibility” part of child rearing. His older brother in downtown Milwaukee found out he had walk 45 minutes to vote since his regular polling place couldn’t open. Figuring most likely he’d stand in line for a couple hours as well, he didn’t have time before work.
We have daffodils about ready to open and a few crocuses have popped up. So exciting!
Claudia says
Good for your son! That’s a good and brave citizen. Stay safe!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Kay, that is so awful to hear your son wasn’t able to vote. This whole thing was such a cluster. I am sure you have seen that picture of Robin Vos telling everyone how safe it was to vote …. in his surgical gown, mask, and gloves. Seriously. In our little village my husband said that it was very orderly and went well. There was a National Guard person at the door who, he said, was a joy to talk with during the day. There was so much wrong about the whole situation.
Kay says
Yes, Chris, just another way the Republicans succeeded in suppressing the vote in another election. Normally our eldest would have been able to vote AS he walked to work (he doesn’t want a car living downtown) had all the usual MKE polls been open.
To quote “Morning Joe:” Vos is a clown.
