The good news: we never lost power, thank goodness!
The kind-of-good news: it looks like we got under 20 inches, more likely 16 or 17. It’s not always easy to tell on our property because we are on a hilly plot and the winds tend to pile up more snow in certain areas and less in others. But looking at the birdbath, I’d say 15 or 16 inches. I’ll measure when we get out there later today.
It was snowing when we got up and it finally stopped about an hour ago. It started around 7 pm yesterday. It was windy during the night and every time one of us woke up we listened to make sure our white noise machine was still running. It was.
Don will wait a while to use the snowblower as the wind chill is in the single digits. It’s very, very cold here which makes it difficult to be outside for too long but also made the snow light and fluffy and that’s a good thing.
While we were waiting for the onslaught, I worked on the dollhouse bedroom, cutting the acrylic windows (after several tries, I finally got them right) and painting the window trim, then gluing the trim pieces in. Using pieces from another kit in a house that’s already been constructed can make for frustration!
When I do this kind of thing again, I’ll probably use something a bit less thick than the acrylic – something that I can place against the wallpaper, rather than in the window opening. Having to fit the acrylic inside of the opening in a house that’s already been built is not easy. The only thing I have left to do construction-wise in this room is the baseboards – both in this room and the downstairs. I have to order them.
I’m already thinking about another house. I really want a Beacon Hill but I read all sorts of threads on how difficult it is to build (Greenleaf’s instructions leave a great deal to be desired) and how much sanding, etc. needs to happen. None of this surprises me, as I ran into the same problem with adding missing pieces to this house. Building it myself would be a huge commitment. I’d rather run into one that’s already been built and needs some work. I’ve been looking at other possibilities, as well, but the nooks and crannies and many rooms in the Beacon Hill are what excites me.
We’ll see where I am led.
Stay safe.
Happy Thursday.

so glad that you didn’t lose power or get quite as much snow as was predicted. still, 16-plus inches of snow (no matter how fluffy and dry it might be) is a lot to deal with. be careful out there!
everything about and in that first photo is absolutely beautiful.
so is your dollhouse work (no offense, i am just drawn more and more to nature). hope you can find a beacon hill dollhouse already built and awaiting your talents to spruce it up!
no snow here, but the temperatures are significantly colder than they were a week or so ago so there’s still plenty of snow left (from last saturday’s five or six inches of snow) on lawns and streets that lack much sun. and big piles of it around parking lot edges. you’ll have mountains of it! :o
hard day at work yesterday, plus i still don’t have the results of the mris. the procedure was done a week ago today (as of 2:00 pm)! maybe that’s for going “out of network”? i don’t know and either way, that’s too long to make anyone wait for medical results. obviously i am not a patient patient at this point (yes, i’ve called about the results; waiting for a call back)!
today will be better. has to be.
glad you’re doing alright in snowland. hope everyone is safe, warm and stays that way!

meant to say we have no *new* snow here, now or in the ten-day forecast. there’s plenty on the ground, but it’s not quite so pretty there as when it’s falling from the sky.
anyway … happy thursday!

We have more coming next week. It’s supposed to rain on Christmas Eve, but it will be snowing on Christmas Day.
Claudia says
It’s going down to 5 degrees tonight. Very cold here, as well.
It must be frustrating having to wait for your results, Kathy. Here’s hoping you hear something on Friday.
Stay safe!
Marilyn+Schmuker says
You definitely got alot of snow. I love that light fluffy kind of snow. Its so much easier to deal with.
We have only a dusting of snow on the ground and that is going to be gone in a day or two. I think we may have a green Christmas this year.
The Beacon Hill dollhouse sounds interesting. I hope you find what you are looking for.
I am so glad you didn’t lose power. Would you have heat without power? Or water? I imagine you have a well like we do.
Stay warm and stay safe
Claudia says
No, we wouldn’t have heat. Or water, as we have a well pump that is run by electricity.
Thanks, Marilyn.
Stay safe.
Dawn Pinnataro says
Glad you nice and warm and no power loss so that is GOOD thing :) That snow sure is pretty to look at, if you don’t have to shovel it, drive in it, or wait for power to come back on after a blizzard! Be safe, stay warm and cozy.
Claudia says
Pretty, but so exhausting to clear! You can’t really appreciate it until a day or two later.
Stay safe, Dawn.
Ellen D. says
That is lovely, fluffy looking snow! Nice to look at (in photos) but glad I don’t have to deal with it! I am sure we will get our fair share in Illinois but not yet – yay!
I wonder if buying a used generator would be helpful so you would always have power no matter the weather. You could store it in your clean shed?!
Be careful shoveling!
Stay safe!
Claudia says
Generators scare me. I have no idea how to deal with one, especially the kind that isn’t hard wired into the house.
Stay safe, Ellen!
Donnamae says
Quite the snow storm! 16-17 inches is still quite a bit of snow…and it’s still going to be a bear to clean up. Be careful out there! ;)
Claudia says
It was a bear to clean up. We’re still tired this morning.
Stay safe, Donna.

Wow…I remember living in the mountains and having snow October to April. We don’t seem to have as much here in Indy, but when I move to Florida near other family…will have none…probably…be safe please please please…cold and strenuous work. If electric goes off, you lose lights, etc…but does the oil keep your heat on? I have usually had heat pumps/heat and electricity, so I am not intelligent in that area…good luck…again be safe-both of you please…prayers dear one…your blog continues to be a breath of fresh air.
Claudia says
But then you’ll have to deal with hurricanes, as my sister and her family do!
No. The boiler is run by electricity. Same for the water, which comes from a well and is run by an electricity driven well pump.
Stay safe, Brenda.
Brendab says
Family is on Gulf. They have not been bothered so far by weather
I loved South Carolina five years in the 90s…so much easier on me than cold
We will see-I will leave if storms come lol
Moving for family and my health
Stay safe please
Prayers
Claudia says
My family is also on the Gulf and they have had their fare share of scary weather!
Stay safe, Brenda!

We had some power problems in earlier years. We got independent from that concerning at least the heating and purchased a wood stove, which is anyway a very pleasant form of warming.
You know, I bought a ready-built Beacon Hill from a private ad in early 2019 (rare to find and not quite cheap). The builder was a retired person, who did a quite good job. He needed 2 month hard work to built it from the kit. To modify, repaint and refine it, according to my ideas, takes another 6 month, actually until today. That just only means the shell. I think I could have built it from the kit. Someone who don’t have two left hands can make this. And you can make that for sure too! You can make all refining and modifying from the beginning and you don’t have remove things what means double work.
You can make paper templates from walls, floors, doorways or things you want to change or double (some walls need that) and save up laborious measuring before building it together. That makes things much easier to try out. You wouldn’t have this with a ready-built house.
To buy this dollhouse is like learning to play a good quality music instrument. You get tired of all the struggle if the instrument don’t sound good. The beauty of this house keeps you going and gives you the motivation for many years. You see, I’m still enthusiastic. Keep on building and stay safe!
Claudia says
I’m thinking about it, Helga! I’m weighing whether I want to spend all that time building, but you make it sound worth the effort. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. They truly help.
Stay safe!

The snow is beautiful but so much of it! Stay safe and warm.
Claudia says
A lot of it.
We’re very tired.
Stay safe, Linda.

OOH, my favorite view from your house. New snow is pretty to look at, but work to clear out. Be careful! We have a small amount of snow here in southwestern Ohio.
Claudia says
A tremendous amount of work. Especially in the country with no pavement and a long gravel driveway!
Stay safe, Jan.
Roxie says
I wish I could say we had some snow overnight, as the overly-optimistic weatherfolk predicted. So I’m enjoying yours instead.
Alas, no white Christmas in our foreseeable future. Yeah, I’m one of those people who adore snow! Rosy cheeks, the crisp sound of snow, the exertion of shoveling, greeting neighbors, the glitter of snow under the night lights, icicles dripping.
Relieved that you retained power and the stuff is fluffy! Your dollhouses are a continuing delight. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been fooled into thinking they are full size!
Stay warm and cozy, Claudia.
Claudia says
We will definitely have a white Christmas. It may be dirty white, but it will be white. It’s supposed to rain on Christmas Eve, but snow on Christmas.
Thanks, Roxie.
Stay safe.
jeanie says
Well, better your yard than mine today, but I know I will get more than my share in due course! Be careful out there. That’s good news about the power — and also good you got to work on the doll house! All’s well? I think so!
Claudia says
All’s well, if you don’t count being exhausted!
Stay safe, Jeanie.
Chris K in WI says
So glad the electricity stayed on for you. I would love to tell you how pretty it looks, but all I can see after 71 years of dealing with snow, is the work ahead, the way it starts to look after a few short days as vehicles go whizzing by on the roads and the pristine snow turns dirty black, the piles to deal with in parking lots and at intersections when one can hardly see on-coming traffic…. etc. etc. I am jaded, I know. But, yes, in that pretty picture, it would make a lovely Christmas card!!
Hope the two of you didn’t over-do it today. The cold and the snow removal process can be brutal. So glad you have the snow blower as that certainly is helpful. May you get some good and peaceful rest after all the work. Take care!
Claudia says
All I see is the work, as well. And I’m feeling it today!
Thanks, Chris.
Stay safe.

Assuming you are working in snow
Of course it is 2020 so has to be one of the worst storms
Claudia says
We are okay. But it was exhausting dealing with all the snow.
Thanks, Brenda.

Happy to hear about the power staying on. What a relief! We got 13″ here, so not as bad as we’d been warned. Still, we were indoors all day and I was jonesing for some fruit cake. LOL. I know it’s a controversial food, but I’ve always been a fan. Never tried figgy pudding, and I wonder if it is similar. Anyway, we made it and you put new windows in, which look great.
Claudia says
Thanks, Nora. We got about 12 – 14 inches here, as well. We’re tired!
Never was a fruitcake fan. I tried, but I didn’t take to it. Did you have some on hand?
Stay safe!
Donna says
Boston and Providence broke previous records with their snow amounts today. Here in Plymouth, we woke to about 8″ on the heavy, wet, cement like snow…..ugggh!!! Finished doing all the vehicles clearing, and all the shoveling and was drenched when coming back in. Took a hot shower and thought, at least that is behind us until I was asked if I looked out the window. The snow had started back up!!! Probably got another 3-4″ which this time was a bit drier, but by then, everything had started to freeze over. I hope this is not an omen of how the winter is going to be. Keep in mind, it is technically still Fall! Stay safe!
Claudia says
Heavy and wet is no good!
My fantasy is that this is the big snow and that virtually nothing happens the rest of the winter…a girl can dream!
Stay safe, Donna.

Still behind with my blog reading but finally the suspense of the snow saga is over. Wow, that looks deep. But beautiful. I can’t imagine the texture.
Since you’ve already told me that you ordered Beacon Hill, I’m adding links here in case you don’t know about them yet.
This is the blog that first started my fascination with Beacon Hill. She discusses all the snags and workarounds so maybe read it before you start building:

And here it is constructed in three weeks. That would never happen to me!

It arrives today, by the way!
