Day Two in the City

October 5, 2015 at 7:32 am by Claudia

10-5 piano top

It’s early morning and I’m doing my best to get this post up and head on into the city for another day of coaching. This will be a long one, as I have to have individual sessions with all ten actors in the show. It’s the kind of thing I can’t think about too much or it will be overwhelming. I just have to breathe and take one session at a time. I’m grateful, of course, for the chance to do some work and get paid for it and for the chance to be of service.

It’s a talented group of actors. The musical is called Songbird  and it’s an adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull  set in modern-day Nashville. The idea is an interesting one and it really works well. It has great country music sung by very talented performers. They also play their own instruments. I really liked it. As is almost always the case, I walked in the door and recognized someone I knew. The musical director worked on Kiss Me Kate, the show I did earlier this year.

I’m tempted, but only tempted, to go to John Connolly’s book signing at The Mysterious Bookshop tonight. Since the day off in theater is usually a Monday, I never even entertained the possibility that I might be in the city. But I will be.

We’ll see. I might be too tired at that point in the day. When you add in 3+ hours of travel, it makes for a long, long day. But I’ll keep it rolling around in my brain as a possibility.

Don’s box of shiny new CDs should arrive today. He is very excited. Hopefully, he should have them available and on a web site by sometime next week. (I wish I could be here when he opens the box!)

How are you? What are you up to today?

Quick little post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Happy Monday.

Claudia, could you possibly make you font bigger or darker or both?
    Thank you

Hi Sue, it’s already black and it’s a large font size. Do you know you can adjust the size of the fonts on websites on your browser? You can zoom in and zoom out and change what you see so it’s easier to read. I’m not comfortable making it any bigger than it already is.

Okay. I read a very small, light grey from here.

I have a feeling it’s your browser, Sue. Blogs can look different depending on the browser and on the operating system. It’s large and almost-black here. See what you can do as far as adjusting things in your browser – hope it helps!

I have the same problem. Not with the font size, but instead the pale gray print on the white background. It’s always been this way. It’s difficult to read, or even read what I write in reply, so I often just highlight the text which then gives it a colored background, like red. I don’t know anything about browsers so I’ll talk to my husband, the techie guy.

Maybe it’s your monitor? I have a Mac and their monitors/screens are great for color and contrast. I assure you, the font is black, so if you’re seeing it as gray, there’s a problem somewhere on your end. Hopefully you can figure it out!

All too often from a busy weekend, I feel like I need Monday to recover. My husband is a whirlwind and operates at a different pace than I do. His work schedule tends to ruin a quiet, comforting and reflective Sunday; I miss Sundays the way they were when I was growing up, when the whole family would honor the day, do things together, be together, maybe go someplace together. My husband’s employer seems to require more and more of him on Saturdays, evenings (and also the occasional Sunday itself)…so it means Sunday chronically becomes a day of chores at home for him, with the yard, cars, errands (hardware store, etc.). He has a lot of projects at home, so it gets frustrating for him, too (weekend warrior). I like to think that when we’re BOTH retired, our daily life can have more rhythm to it although, of course, we’ll miss the full paycheck. I think it’s possibly too late now to plant bulbs but he did get iris and tulips…also some daffodils…but, then, he had no time left to work with them. We planted bulbs too late last year, too…but, curiously, we have the oddest sort of lily that’s come up just in the past few days from what we put in the ground last October…an entire year ago…and which we thought was a bust, but here it is; such a nice surprise. Our weather here in SoCalif is clearly skewed with the abnormal heat and drought. I now have a riot of roses and a bright-red poinsettia is blooming too early.

We woke today to a gloriously-cool morning here in SoCalif…60 degrees in full sun around 9am. This is so rare, and we’ll be in a heatwave again, according to NWS in 3 days, but I’m basking in the coolness for the moment. Can actually open a window and get in some fresh air, not have on the central air conditioning (for once!!!).

You have such an interesting job, Claudia. I enjoy hearing about the work you do and the places you go. To me, you and Don have a pretty unique life!

I want to go and get busy now. It’s bill-paying day for me; ugh. But, anything to get my mind off that container ship which sank in the hurricane before it could get to Puerto Rico. It’s such an upsetting headline. I feel so badly for them and their families. More and more lately, I wish I could just avoid the daily barrage of bad news in the world. Sometimes being uninformed is easier.

So nice to have a cool morning and a surprise lily, Vicki! I haven’t watched the news and didn’t hear about the container ship…I’ll have to read about it. It sounds tragic.

Have fun in NYC, even though you’ll be working. At least it’s work you love.

It sounds like a very long day!
Steaming and serving lattes and the like to the many thirsty souls who’ve come my way today along with fun time for my furry friend is leaving me more than ready for a sound sleep too! I hope yours will be a sweet sleep when your head finally hits the pillow Claudia!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
