Disappearing Leaves and Fire Warnings

October 25, 2024 at 8:56 am by Claudia

We raked our tushes off yesterday and our muscles are sore. But the corral and the back forty look better. In the past few days nearly all of our trees have lost their leaves. The oaks are still hanging in there, as are the catalpas, but they’ll soon be bare. This morning, I looked at some photos of trees that I took less than a week ago and realized they are completely bare now. It happened very quickly.

We are facing fire warnings every day now as the humidity is very low and we’ve not had any rain in quite a while. I know I’ve said this before, but this time? I have never seen the rivers so low. It’s very worrying. And there’s no rain on the horizon for at least a week if not more.

A few days ago, these leaves were the only ones left on the big maple. Now, they’re gone.

A photo of the house as we came out of the woods yesterday.

It’s getting cold again. We’ll have to bring the porch plants inside on Sunday and Monday. The rest of that week will bring warmer temperatures at night, so it’s not yet time to let them go.

Lots of chores to attend to today; laundry, bill paying, returning a book to the library, watering all the houseplants, and hopefully, assessing what needs to be done on the Beacon Hill.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Gusty winds have brought a lot of our leaves down, too, but we have a lot of pretty ones left yet. We were also lucky to get some rain this morning which we really need, too.
Hope you have a pleasant weekend, Claudia!

it’s not news, of course, given all you share, but what a pretty place you live in (your home, all those trees …)! i am happy for you and don.

hope you both feel no consequences today from all that raking.

one of those things on your to-do list sounds (to me) a lot more fun than the others. enjoy!

we are back in drought stage again so i was happy to hear we would get rain last night. nope … barely a five-minute dribble. nice thunder and lightning though. may we all get what we need (not just talking about rain here).

time to feed earl, burl and the birds (they have food and water available all the time; daily i put out more for them and occasionally i need to clean out the empty shells. today’s a clean-out day).

hope you all have a great day. stay safe.

May everyone that needs rain, get some. And may everyone who has had too much rain and flooding get some dry weather.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

I’m having a hard time of wrapping my head around how dry it is here. Just a few weeks ago, we had massive flooding and now, as my mom would say, dry as dust.
I keep looking up- such beautiful blue skies, <3
Hope you get a chance to play with the Beacon Hill!

Beautiful picture of your home. We need rain too. The monsoon season really never amounted to anything. Everything is very dry. Just this week was the end of triple digits. Living in AZ it is expected. Did your burning bush give a beautiful show this year? One other question. I haven’t seen any comments lately from Vicki. She lives in CA with her husband who works at a hardware store. Hope she is well.

Yes. The burning bush is beautiful. I have to take a picture of it. Vicki had to take a break from commenting (she wrote a letter to me) because of some physical issues that made being on the computer difficult. Hopefully, she’ll be back with us soon.

      Stay safe, Olivia.

dear Claudia/Don — “all the leaves are brown” totally appropriate for here — zero rain in Oct and only a few drops in Sep — horse people having so much trouble w/dried up pastures, feeding hay but must be careful they don’t eat too much — founder is a horrible condition horses get — one of our neighbors had a horse die last week w/it — usually happens when they overeat. horses will eat, eat,eat until food is removed or horse is stabled away from food. a cow will eat then rest awhile then eat some more later — animal behaviors are fascinating. feeling s o o o anxious re election, people have lost their minds !! OR have I ???? hope your wkend is a good one

Hope you get the much needed rain. A nice fall rain when you and Don are cozy inside. It’s hard to believe we are almost into November and we are still getting temps in the 70s. Perhaps a snowflake or two would not go amiss. But only a few! Enjoy your weekend. Hugs, Elaine.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
