This is happening right now, smack dab in the middle of the chunk of time in which Don would be traveling home for a 24 hour visit. It’s snowing in the city as well. Even if he tried to get home later, the visit would end up being so short that it wouldn’t be worth it. I had – foolishly – thought it would just be a dusting of snow that would make no difference, but we got more than expected.
So we made the decision to forego the visit.
I am so over this stuff. It’s been nothing but a pain this entire winter. I know it will melt quickly, but I would have preferred it happening on another day. Who am I kidding? I would have preferred it never happening to begin with! And I wanted to see my husband.
Ah well. And there are bigger problems out there. We’re just disappointed.
I had a quiet day yesterday, with nothing much happening. I finished watching the third season of Broadchurch on Netflix. If you are a fan of that series, watch the newest season of 8 episodes. Truly excellent. I also watched Easter Parade on TCM because I love it. I’m not a fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, so I didn’t watch it except for the last 20 minutes. But that last 20 minutes makes me want to watch the whole thing, so I’m hoping it’s eventually available On Demand. The guy who played Judas is the same actor I saw play Aaron Burr in Hamilton. He’s amazingly talented.
Happy Monday.

I’m sorry…..
Claudia says
It’s okay. Disappointing, but ultimately? OK
shanna says
Oh, pooh on the weather! I recorded JCSuperstar, but haven’t watched it yet. I was never very in to it, either, but a couple of songs I liked—back when music sounded good to me. So, we’ll see.
Claudia says
We’ll see! Thanks, Shanna.
Donnamae says
The ‘g’ rated version is…oh shucks darn….so sorry to hear that there won’t be a visit. We are getting some kind of weather event starting tonight…they’re not even sure what yet, but it doesn’t sound good. It’s very hard to wait for spring, isn’t it? All we seem to have these days are weather setbacks. Hope you have a good day! ;)
Claudia says
So sorry you have a weather event tonight. We are all darned tired of winter!
Tammy S Asad says
My Albany boy’s girlfriend was visiting him from the city over the weekend and they took some gorgeous pictures at a park. She went back yesterday and today they are both getting the white stuff.
Claudia says
Complete change, Tammy! It’s been a rather crazy winter.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
We have a winter weather advisory for tonight. I have been sick of it since October. BEFORE it ever snowed. Just ugh.
Our son was in a HS production of JC so we watched it last night. It was fantastic. The choreography was so good! And each and every one of the soloists were simply wonderful. As was the entire cast! And what a perfect night to watch it.
I’m so sorry that you, too, have this yuk weather. It is sunny this morning, but just knowing what is lurking out there is so disheartening. The only green I have seen in our yard so far are the chives pushing through. It is April for goodness sakes!! Time to get on with it and leave this crud behind. Hopefully it will melt immediately.
Claudia says
It is disheartening. Everyone is more than ready for spring to come and STAY. Hang in there, Chris!
kathy in iowa says
sorry the weather prevented you and don from spending time together this weekend.
hopefully that’s it for snow (until maybe december)!
happy monday.
kathy in iowa
Claudia says
I hope so. Fingers crossed!
Suzan Stoddard says
Perhaps you should prepare for many winters like this- the times they are a changin’ for sure. 90 degrees here yesterday- insane.
Claudia says
I don’t think there’s any way to prepare for it. Each of the last several winters has been wildly different than the others. No pattern!
Karen Milano says
Hmm.. you’re the third person who’s mentioned Broadchurch this week – I’m going to check it out. SO tired of the -Homeland- hyperactivity and violence and backstabbing and distrust, blah blah blah.
Claudia says
If you haven’t watched the first two seasons, go in order. There’s a back story you need to be aware of. If you’ve already seen them, watch the newest season.
Homeland is too much like our present reality, don’t you think?
Audrey Johnson says
We are in Michigan and got hit with severe cold. Kids couldn’t do anything outside. Thank goodness for warm homes. Jesus Christ Superstar was a pleasant surprise for me. I didn’t expect to enjoy it but I did. Man can that guy sing (Judas). Very entertaining.
Hope it warms up for you soon.
Claudia says
He is so talented! Glad you liked it, Audrey!
Penny Spencer says
Claudia, sorry about the white stuff again. It’s still pretty cold here in Michigan and we got a powder sugar snow late Saturday. ENOUGH. I only saw bits and pieces of J.C. Superstar in the past. Not my kind of production but I do enjoy John Legend’s singing. We watched it last
night just to know the entire storyline. Thought the music score drowned out most of the singing and me being partially deaf have to rely on closed captioning and it was way behind the actual singing. Glad we watched, but it’s over for me. Been watching my many tulips emerge
only to have the deer nibble them down last night! Dang.
Claudia says
Having to deal with closed captioning must have been frustrating, Penny! Sorry!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Oh Darn! Here I was thinking that Don got home for a visit. Darn snow! I watched a little bit of Jesus Christ Superstar but not all however I did DVR it so may watch more. I had a great Easter with the family! Energetic Grandkids, cooking, cleaning and hiding/hunting Easter eggs made for a wonderful day but exhausting! Wouldn’t change a thing.
Claudia says
Glad it was a good day, Linda!
Janet in Rochester says
So sorry you & Don weren’t able to see each other. Sorry about the white stuff too. We had a mild but windy & somewhat sunny Easter here. Rain on Saturday night. What snow we have is melting. There’s a big pond near my grocery store – home to 100s of ducks, geese & other birds most of the year – but right now it holds a MASSIVE pile of absolutely filthy snow from the parking lot. It’s a typical size for the end of Winter at the moment. And it may be June before the whole thing is completely gone [depending on how warm a Spring we have]. Each week I look forward to seeing how much smaller it is. And each year, I welcome the Great Dwindling even more! Hope YOUR white stuff melts immediately & doesn’t return until NEXT Winter. In our family, the annual showing of “The Ten Commandment” is our Easter thing, but I confess I dozed through parts this year. Not enough Saturday coffee, I guess. Peace.

Claudia says
It’s already almost melted which makes me frustrated. If it had stopped earlier, Don could have made it up here. Darn!
Cheryl Lawson says
Hi Claudia,
Snowing here in Southern Maine as well; definitely disappointing. I watched Superstar last night and absolutely loved it. . . the voices, the acting, the stagecraft . . so well done. The music from that show is haunting and both John Legend and Brandon Victor Dixon have beautiful voices. Hang in there; can’t snow forever!?
Cheryl
Claudia says
Hopefully not!
Vicki says
I got caught up in the Kennedy Dynasties series on CNN last night. I can’t imagine what my parents went thru with the Cuban Missile Crisis. And of course nobody who was an ‘ordinary’ person knew what to do or how to prepare (except to die?).
That’s a lot of snow, Claudia. Beautiful but bleak. Does it ever make you start thinking of wanting to move to a warmer clime for the true retirement years? Do you ever entertain those thoughts (like I do??)? If so, does any other state really stand out as a permanent destination?
Claudia says
Sometimes. Not often. If I could afford it, I might choose CA, but we know there are problems there, right? I have no desire to live in Florida, even though my sister is there. And in view of the situation with Trump, I’d rather flee to Canada or the South of France.
Vicki says
Ha! I hear you on Canada. I have my eye out on several places I’d love to visit (if not live) in genteel Canada (and I know you have roots there, too, Claudia).
SoCalif is of course outta-sight on rents and home values right now. Tremendously escalated. The house across the street from me just sold for $495,000 and it’s just a little crappy, 60-yr-old, 3-bed tract house which needs a lot of work in a so-so neighborhood in a equally-crappy small town.
I know you love La Jolla; I think they’re safe from wildfire. There’s always earthquake threat. But La Jolla, from what I hear, is a pricey place to live for all that sunshine. Still, my husband isn’t intimidated by renting in old age, and sometimes you can find just the right place. I know people who rent out places they own and they’ll forego higher rent for keeping/getting a super-good tenant that gives them no problems. They work it out.
I think I mentioned this another time but I worked with a gal in Santa Barbara who came from L.A. to SB in her 20s, never owned anything, always rented; now is an aging ‘senior’ in her early 70s and somewhat curtailed activity-wise by a much-older husband. Yet I’ve learned they have a really happy life in the town they just love by the sea. SB is an easy town to get around in once you get accustomed to the one-way streets. There’s a lot of free stuff to do. It’s so scenic and the weather is fantastic.
(In the ‘open’ for the movie, “It’s Complicated” with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, those panoramas of Santa Barbara and its coastline tug at my heart every single time I watch that film; I lived in Santa Barbara for three years and it was a golden time for me; I adored living there.)
SB is a college/university environment like La Jolla, with associated things like plays, concerts; sports events. Of course nothing beats the beach and it’s a beach town. Many places to eat (known by locals, not tourists) aren’t ultra-expensive. This former co-worker of mine has a modest apartment which allows one pet, so they have a cat.
There’s also terrific medical care in SB.
I used to get a little edgy over the proximity to the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant and being downwind of it but it’s being ‘deactivated’ in the next 6 or 7 years (and then Calif as a state won’t have anymore of them).
Anyway, just one example with my friend but it often makes me think, who cares if you rent if you’re living somewhere where you are sublimely happy, you don’t have to worry about maintenance of a home and indeed have every amenity around you that you could want (except maybe a 4th season, ala snow). My cousin just sold his big house with a pool to go into an apartment/condo conversion where he halves his square footage and loses a garage but he’s so excited and relieved to no longer have the burden of yard/pool/McMansion to maintain at age 70. He said he feels ‘free’.
Claudia says
We wouldn’t mind renting. But we also love our house and the Hudson Valley. So, we’ll see. For the present, we’re staying here.
Lisamarie says
I am a HUGE fan of JCS, and I am happy to report that the production was amazing. Apart the Hamilton actor, who was quite good, none of the rest of the cast were really actors, but they did such a beautiful job. The set was fabulous, the choreography crazy good, and the chorus was equally crazy good. I was so impressed, I didn’t flip channels and I stayed up to the bitter end.
I hope it streams on demand and that they make that soundtrack available.
One never knows what to expect with these live televised shows, and in my humble opinion, most miss the mark. This could have been a complete train wreck, but it was so not! You should watch it if you get the chance! (my unsolicited advice :)) I hope your snow melts soon. It is bitter cold here in VT but dry and sunny, thank goodness!
Claudia says
i’m sure I’ll watch it. I’m not a fan of the music – it was big when I was in college and my suite mate had a copy of the album. It was played all the time. But the staging of it looks powerful and I love Brandon Dixon, so it will be fun to watch!
Marilyn says
Sorry that Don could not come. The snow here did melt quickly and before I had to go out and shovel. Hope this is the last if the snow. I watched “Easter Parade” last week. We had taped it a few years ago when TCM had it on. That is the type of movie that one never tires of watching.
Marilyn
Claudia says
I actually own the movie, but somehow it’s more fun to watch live on TCM!
Nancy says
Claudia, I saw the original “Jesus Christ Superstar” twice on broadway, years ago, didn’t think it could be good this way, but boy, was I wrong! I loved it – everyone was perfection!
Please watch it and let us know what you think, you are the “broadway authority”, not me!
Claudia says
I will. Thanks, Nancy!
Nora Mills says
Hi Claudia–we got more snow than we expected too. I’m so sorry it scotched your visit with Don. That’s special time these days (well, it’s always special, but you know). I love the music from Jesus Christ, but I didn’t watch it cuz I’m not. a Legend fan, but I always thought the Judas role was the best. Perhaps this week there will be buds!! We’re still waiting. :-)
Claudia says
I like John Legend – love his voice. He’s not an actor, so it will be interesting to see how he does in the role. I agree, Judas has the best role! (I see buds on my lilac bush, Nora!)
