Dreams, Lists, and Noise

September 17, 2014 at 8:35 am by Claudia

I don’t often remember my dreams, but I did remember a scrap of one yesterday. What it was about, I’m not sure. I don’t remember any details except for the fact that I was a younger version of my current self and my mom was there. The dream wasn’t about my mom, specifically. But she was there hanging out and talking with me, much as we interacted in my teens and early twenties.

That’s all I remember. But it was lovely. I woke up with a strong sense of my mother and a sadness and happiness for days gone by…I miss her.

I probably dream of her more than I know. Many years after my brother died – he’s been gone for 23 years now – I had a vivid dream in which he and I were dancing together. The dance, as I remember, was a waltz. It was joyous and happy. I woke up with a smile on my face. That dream was so powerful that I knew he’d been with me, as sure as I knew my name. I take comfort in that dream even now.

Ah, well.

from the rear rose

Thank goodness for a second round of blooms on my rose bushes. Every year, long after I’ve given up on them, they sneak back in for an encore presentation. Very welcome, indeed.

I ran a few errands yesterday, made more lists, and in a spurt of energy, mowed the entire front lawn. It’s big, my friends. I should have stopped much earlier than I did, but I kept at it, knowing my back would be shouting in protest at the end of the day. It did.

On the other hand, that’s one of the things on my list for today that I don’t have to do. I like that.

And in the same vein of planned obsolescence as the breakdown of the washing machine, the television is now acting up. We’ve been babying it for quite a while now – the sound has a background of crackles and pops. We would turn on the television, then immediately turn down the volume for about 10 minutes, then slowly increase the volume and all would be okay. No longer. Crackles, snaps, and pops are there no matter what I do. And a new wrinkle: the sound cuts out here and there.

I remember asking the cable guy about it and he asked me how long we’d had the TV. I said about 8 years. Yep, he said, that’s about as long as you can expect it to last. Then things start happening.

Planned obsolescence.

It isn’t so bad if I’m watching something with a lot of music and sound effects, but anything quiet, i.e., The Roosevelts, is not at all fun. I end up turning it off.

After we get back: dealing with the washing machine and a new television.

Shiny new pencils for my work in Hartford:

for the trip pencils

I bought a box of Blackwings. The 602. Our local used bookstore is so cool. I told the owner I loved these pencils and he nodded. They are the best, he said.

Yep.

More on the To Do list today.

Oh, Scoutie, I hope you’re up for an adventure.

We did a lot of shopping for a TV. Best deal was WalMart, sad to say! We bought a 32 inch flat screen VIZIO brand and it has been great for 3 years. Hated to buy a new one, but after 20 yrs of four used ones for under$50 each at yard sales, figured it was time! Love the backside of the Rose, unusual view and so pretty. Dreams can be so comforting. It is like a sweet visit from the great beyond.

Don has a television in his apartment that is pretty neat – I’m going to have him find out more about it. The picture was great!

Glad you are getting things done Claudia. I find that chore lists help me accomplish more. My aunt is being transferred to a larger hospital today for her carotid artery to be cleared. Risky but necessary. I am cleaning and babysitting as usual. It’s cloudy and gloomy here and a cool down is coming so we are looking forward to that. I love that your roses bloom again when you’ve almost given up hope.

Dreams. I know my Dad visits me in my dreams sometimes. He is often concerned about my Mom. It’s funny how I wake up knowing he’s around. Glad you are getting things on your list done. Today I take Mom to WalMart and it’s always an adventure.
    hugs,
    Linda

Beautiful rose shot Claudia. Thank you for sharing. Well, the older I get the more I need lists…that’s for sure. I haven’t quite figured out if it is because I have so much more to remember? Or if I am just becoming incapable of remembering as many things? Most likely a combination of the two. I rarely remember dreams, but in the past few weeks I’ve been waking up rembering them — strange. Nothing specific, but they are always making me laugh. I’m thinking that’s a good thing!

If I don’t write it down, and it involves more than one thing to do, I will usually forget!

Well, sounds like good progress on your list. There’s nothing better than finishing items, and even getting ahead! Beautiful rose…pristine pencils…almost packed? ;)

On the way to being packed. I have to take food along, all Scout’s things, my clothes, my research stuff, my books and everything else I might need – camera, chargers, etc.

I understand the dream of your mom and brother. I often feel my mom with me. She was a real stickler for correct grammar and proper use of words. Have you ever had a word come out of your mouth that just totally messed up the sentence you were speaking? It is at those times I feel my mom. I say I just got tapped up side the head. That is what she used to do.
I had given up on any of my flowers for the season because we have had a frost. But lo and behold I noticed yesterday that they are making a comeback! I will need to get out there today and take pictures before they are totally finished.

I’m glad to hear they are making a comeback. I hope there isn’t a hard frost while I’m gone, but….

I know the dreams you are speaking of..they are very real and comforting..Dancing with your brother must have been so wonderful..I love when they visit..it leaves me with such a feeling of peace..It is nice when flowers come back one more time to say “so long..I’ll see you later”..What a lovely picture..how often do we see the beauty of the other side of things..What is it with appliances?..seems like when one goes it isn’t long until another one joins it..lol..At least the price of TV’s seems to have dropped lately..depending on what type you want that is..

They’re much more affordable than when we bought the TV 8 years ago.

My daughter and I were just discussing planned obsolescence yesterday! While cleaning I opened a box that had been taped shut – it had my old printer. “Old”, ha! 5-6yrs. well I need a printer the one bought to replace it quit over a year ago . There were ink cartridges , the drive disk, cords etc. Hooked it up. Turns out it’s not compatible with Windows 7 or newer. :/
The roses are beautiful. And I love seeing ours burst forth late in the year a big hurrah!
It’s nice to mark hints off the list too.

They get you coming and going, don’t they, Pat? Printer works fine, just not with Windows 7 or newer!!

Here is hoping you and Miss Scout get an excellent night’s sleep and happy safe travels! Maybe a tiny bottle to put in the car and snip those last roses and take along to enjoy along the way?

Maybe….but the car will be so full that it just might be the ruin of the roses. And they’ll get Scout’s flying white dog hair on them.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
