I’ve got all my ducks in a row.
I know. Groan.
More from Heidi’s shop: these vintage wooden ducks were in a baggie with some other items – most of which I trashed. The ducks were what I had my eyes on. Aren’t they sweet? They remind me of another era, of simple wooden toys, of a non-high tech existence. I had to bring them home. They are safely nestled in with the egg cups that are on display in the den.
This chalkware bride and groom cake topper came home with me, too. The poor things are missing a bit of paint here and there. The bride had a yellow waxy stain on her bodice and in one of the folds on the back of her dress. After using my finger nail to remove as much of it as I could, I grabbed some white paint and her bodice looks bridal once more. This piece is heavy and large.
There they are in the studio cabinet with their new friends. You can see how tall they are in relationship to the others. The cake topper right in front of them and to the right is the very first one I acquired. Also chalkware. I won it in a blog giveaway.
That’s what happens, you know. You get one thing. You like it. You find yourself starting to look for others when you are out and about. I have eight of them now. But I acquire them slowly. There’s no rush. And no eBay this time. I like the hunt. If I happen to see one when I’m in a shop, I examine it closely. If it’s too battered, I leave it there. But if it’s artfully aged, like my newest, I’ll get it.
They need a home, you know. At one time they were on the top of the world, basking in the joy of a celebration, symbolizing a happy union – and now they are sitting at the back of some some shelf in a shop.
Poor things.
And they are just kitschy enough to be fabulous.
Don and I got married in a simple and lovely ceremony with two couples sharing our joyous day. We had a cake, but no cake topper. I didn’t want one.
But now I do.
Go figure.
Happy Saturday.

Your cake toppers are sweet, Claudia, but your shelf filled with your charming vintage egg cups and those darling wood ducks makes my heart go pitter pat!! Adorable!!
Claudia says
Thank you, Vickie! Have a great weekend.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Claudia the little ducks are so darn cute! I can see why you had to bring them home. I love your vintage cake toppers. I think they are lovely and sentimental. Sweet!
Claudia says
Thanks, Linda. Those ducks just stole my heart.

We had a small wedding too. Eight in attendance including us. We took everyone out to dinner, but alas, no cake. I also love cake topers, but don’t collect them. Last thing I need. But I do look at them when I am antiquing. I do understand “The Hunt”. I don’t want anyone getting things for me, but I don’t mind them telling me of something they have spotted. If I can’t find it and purchase it myself, half the fun is gone! Love the ducks too.

I love collecting – and I find that smalls are the best thing for me right now; cake toppers, egg cups, miniature pottery, etc.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Oh, Claudia! Those little DUCKS!!!! For most of my working life I was a trainer. I always felt like a Mama duck leading her ducklings. I remember years ago, bringing my little group of trainees into a meeting with me, and someone said “Here comes Chris w/ her ducklings behind her!” Over the years I have bought several little ducks like that in glass, resin, etc. They are absolutely precious!! The cake toppers are wonderful, too. I know we had a cake topper, but I can’t remember a thing about it. From nearly 42 years ago, it now would likely be called vintage!
Fun finds! Is the store officially closed up now?
Have a wonderful day!!
Claudia says
No, the store is going to be open a few days a week until March 31st. Heidi has a Christmas room with lots of vintage ornaments and she hasn’t even started getting that stuff ready for sale!
Donnamae says
All your ducks in a row? Really? But…they are cuties…I can see why you wanted them. I had forgotten you collect cake toppers…nice to know they have a home now…and I’m sure they are happy too! Enjoy your Saturday! ;)
Claudia says
They are very cute! Have a good weekend, Donna.

Ducks! Oh Claudia, I LOVE the ducks!
I call all of my grandbabbies (and those I am fond enough to give a nickname to) my ‘baby ducks’. It start with my boys following me around in a line like baby ducks and just stuck. What an adorable addition to your collecting and just in time for spring.
You made me smile today. Thank you.

You are most welcome, Cassandra!

I think that you and Don should have a simple ceremony to renew your vows. Invite some friends and have it in your lovely cottage garden. Scout can be your maid of honor. Serve a pretty homemade cake with one of your toppers. It’s a blog post!

Claudia says
I don’t know about that. Maybe at the twenty year mark – which will be in 4 1/2 years.
Janet in Rochester says
Cake toppers – what an original thing to collect. I don’t know anyone else that does that, although there aren’t a lot of collectors in my crowd. It must be fun, seeing all different kinds from times gone by. Your new one looks like it may be from the 50s – the dress looks a lot like my mom’s. PS – I MUST possess those ducks – please send ASAP! LOL and have a great weekend.
Claudia says
A friend of mine who owns a vintage shop in San Diego has the most incredible collection of cake toppers – she has gradually been selling them off in her store. She gave me one of those toppers.

Claudia, I adore those ducks! How cute they are! They are perfect with the egg cups.
And I enjoyed seeing you add to the cake toppers, they really are fun. So glad you rescued them. They are a bit like shooting stars, but you have made it possible for them to continue glowing. just look at those happy faces!
I read the other post, but wanted to be sure you saw this so will respond here. I am so sorry about your BIL’s loss and the fact that both mothers are in the hospital. Prayers to all of you.
Oh, and I nearly forgot… I like the flowers on the wall next to your desk and under the frames.
I am so glad you got out and had fun. I sat with a friend in her shop yesterday afternoon as she is on crutches after a bad accident and has trouble getting up and down. We had a lovely visit, and I bought a small bunny she painted. It was a good day. That and lunch with an old friend who was back in town. I know your friend who had the shop loved having you there with her.

Thank you, Sheila! It was good to get out and do something other than shovel and worry. It’s always a good thing to help someone, too. Gets me out of my funk and that’s a good thing. You sound like you had a lovely day yesterday, Have a wonderful weekend.
Melanie says
Love the little ducks – they are so cute and charming! Since you didn’t have a cake topper and now want one, why not bake a cake (or have one made) for your next anniversary and use one of your cake toppers? :-)
Claudia says
Oh, I just want them to collect. I don’t need them on a cake! xo
nancy says
I just love your wedding couples! Imagine the stories they could tell if they could talk….what the bride wore, how was the food, what kind of music played, big or small reception, happy day, rainy, sunny, any secrets told nearby the cake they were on!!!
ps. can you tell me what kind of egg is sitting in “Mr. Humpty Dumpty” egg cup, it’s interesting to me because I make Ukrainian pysanky. Thanks.
Claudia says
Don bought them for me in Prague when he was there working last year. I don’t know anything more than that, but I would assume they are done in somewhat the same fashion as Ukrainian eggs.
Joanne says
I love your collections. ….I still have my cake topper….There is still time Claudia you can get a topper for yur next anniversary. Love love love the ducks!
Blessings, Joanne
Claudia says
No, I don’t want or need one for our anniversary – I just want many of them for my collection!!
Betsy says
I’ll admit the ducks are cute, BUT, I adore the cake toppers. I’m glad to know someone is rescuing them from a life on the shelf, or worse, the trash bin. It saddens me to think of the happy day that they helped to celebrate and the myriad of reasons they may be consigned to a sales store. I just may have to take up the task too!
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
I know! It makes me sad. They all have stories to tell, of that I’m sure!
Laura says
I love those ducks. I feel like I am right back in the 50’s. I didn’t want a fancy wedding when I was young. I went for simplicity. I like that you are rescuing those sweet toppers. xo Laura
Sally says
I love your ducks Claudia! I would have snatched those right up too, so charming. And I love your wedding cake topper collection, you have so much fun stuff. I especially love your new one – so hard to find two brunettes (David and I are two brunettes), almost always, it’s two blondes. Bah humbug.
Thinking of you xo
Spencer says
I LOVE your bride and groom(s)… ADORABLE! My daughter has wanted to collect ’em for many years… She’s going to love seeing your collection.
So good to hear from you. I’ve been out of the loop for so long, it’s hard getting re-acclimated.
Blessings!

What a dear collection, Claudia. And I LOVE those little ducks! I think it’s important to be a caretaker of the past and treasure those items that are cast aside or forgotten by others. When I go into an antique shop or a second-hand store, it feels sometimes like a rescue mission! Wishing you a lovely week ahead.
