Early Frost

October 10, 2025 at 9:34 am by Claudia

I walked around the property yesterday, taking photos of plants and trees that would be in peril after the frost. The limelight hydrangea, at its most intense pink color, will turn brown.

The catalpa will drop all its leaves.

The late rose buds are in peril.

Maybe the wildflowers? We’ll see.

Don and I brought in all the porch plants. They’re scattered throughout the living room and den. I had an idea for the morning glories: place our stepladder in its upside down V shape over the morning glories, place a tarp over that and pin it with clothespins to the fence and some other supports in the garden. We also placed a cover over the zinnias as I noticed there are some new buds there.

It’s only 34 degrees at the moment. We slept in today and it was 32 when we woke up. I’m going to wait until the temperature hits 40 before I take the tarp off the morning glories. Fingers crossed! All you can do is try your best, right?

It’s a beautiful morning with abundant sunshine. There is still frost on my windshield. I can see the catalpa leaves falling. Catalpas drop a few leaves in early fall, but for the most part, leaves stay on the tree until the first freeze.

We’ve been watching a lot of baseball playoff games, as well as Alias, so we’ve been juggling high stakes tension-filled programs every night. As a consequence, we have been up a bit later than usual. That’s why this morning’s extra hour of sleep was such a delightful and unexpected surprise. We needed it.

Glad to hear the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to someone who has actually spent a lifetime working for peace in Venezuela. Congratulations to Maria Corina Machado!

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

your plan for the morning glories sounds good. hope it – and the effort of bringing in all the potted plants – pays off for you! good you had some more rest and sleep and some tv shows/games to enjoy, too.

same thoughts here about the nobel peace prize … great if he played a teeny part in bringing even a temporary break in war, but i don’t think someone who spews so much hatred, division, revenge and lies in his own country (and especially as the so-called “leader” of our country) deserves any peace prize.

we are having a (hopefully) brief warm-up here … might reach 80 degrees on sunday, when high temperature this time of year is usually around 65 or 67. i would welcome that frost! :)

hope you, don and everyone else have a great weekend. stay safe.

The morning glories are, unfortunately, in sad shape.

If you were a gardener, you wouldn’t welcome that frost! But it is what it is.

      Stay safe, Kathy!

hope your morning glories surprise you with some rebound blooms.

and you’re right. though i wasn’t welcoming the frost for you or encouraging you to welcome it. i’d welcome it here just for me. :)

happy, safe weekend to you and don.

Good morning Claudia! It froze here too… but I almost consider it a late one! I spent most of my adult life farther north and frost in early September was the rule of thumb. And I had the same problem with morning glories and the first possible blossom falling on the first frosty night! They are a more southern plant, requiring ninety days to bloom (according to the old books) so I was aware I was pushing my luck planting them. My father in law dug his whole plant and potted it on the porch for the fall season in order to get blossoms.
I think your tent will be successful and hope the plant gives you many more blossoms the rest of the month. My first year in this house (nearly 20 yrs. ago!) I planted morning glories and was overwhelmed with blossoms! I’ll never forget that year! But yes, frost is coming and it is on the pumpkin this morning… a neighbor has some growing in her front yard!
    Enjoy the beautiful day!

We’ve lived here for 20 years. I used to plant my morning glories during the first week of May and had plentiful flowers in August and September. But for the past 4 or 5 years, no buds have appeared until October and that’s too late.

      Climate change is real.

When we lived in California, morning glories climbed up two of our fences and bloomed all summer long.

      Thanks, Betsy.

      Stay safe.

Ingenious idea to preserve the morning glories…hope it helped. We had frost on our rooftops, but my plants have been temporarily soared. It’s just a matter of time.

We’ve been watching the Brewers…wasn’t a good game last night. The series is tied. Hopefully, they will rebound on Saturday.

    Enjoy your day! ;)

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. I thought they were okay, but they withered during the course of the day. So sad. There were scads of little buds everywhere.

We’ve been cheering for the Cubs. I’ve spent a lot of time in Chicago over the years and my best friend lives there. But mostly because Agent Orange and his goons are giving them such a hard time. But if the Brewers win, I’ll be happy for you.

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

My gardener neighbor throws blankets and/or sheets over her plants for early frost and they all seem to pull through. Hope your morning glories made it.

So do I, but the morning glories are too fragile. They didn’t make it, even covered and protected.

      Thanks, Jeanie.

      Stay safe.

So sorry your morning glories succumbed to the frost. You and Don put up such a good fight. We’re expecting frost tonight, too. It’s our Thanksgiving on Monday. Sometimes it’s so hot the kids are in shorts but sometimes there is snow. This year will be just about perfect. I agree, the Nobel Peace Prize went to a very deserving person. Happy weekend to you and Don. Hugs, Elaine

Haven’t had frost, actually its lovely out. When I sit down I just fall asleep. Quite a lot of stomach pain. I wish I could stay in bed for a week, get up and feel great.
Mike took out our little tree. We’ve planted 2 trees that haven’t made it past a few years. My neighbor has had the same problems. There are a couple of black walnut trees across from the big Catholic Church nearby. Those trees should have never been planted around this area, but they are old and beautiful. There is a very old tree near there, a heritage tree. Somebody is trying to grow a palm tree in town. That’s pretty cool! Im a tree person.
I really do like your latest doll house. You’re a great designer.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
