Easy DIY: Make a Table Runner from Vintage Napkins

June 4, 2012 at 7:30 am by Claudia

While looking for something I had misplaced (still haven’t found it) I came across a set of 4 vintage napkins that were given to me one Christmas by Heidi’s daughters, Whitney and Aubrey.

Obviously, I swooned when I saw them. I love everything about this sort of vintage linen: the colors, the design, the thickness of the fabric. I tend to think this design comes from the 50’s – what do you think?

Anyway, they’ve been sitting in a drawer for a long time since Don and I rarely use cloth napkins. I know; we should be the kind of people who always set a beautiful table, with napkins in holders, and flowers on the table. We aren’t. 99% of the time, we eat our dinner on trays in the den. We like it.

Why not make them into a table runner? (Because even if we don’t eat there, I like the table to look pretty.) I’m sure I am far from the first person to come up with this idea and it’s awfully simple and straightforward.

I love it. So quick, so easy. I just pinned them together, making sure they were nicely aligned, fired up the sewing machine and there you have it. Now I have another shot of aqua in the kitchen and I get to see that fabulous pattern every day.

It’s a great way to use vintage napkins and linens. I have a whole slew of them and I just might have to make some more of these.

Happy Monday.

Last year I took 4 antique dinner cloths and sewed them into a table runner for a friend. I used a stitch on my machine that didn’t make a seam…just joined them together without having that thickness. Your table runner is so pretty with the design! I love that turquoise color!~Hugs, Patti

The runner looks wonderful and so pretty with the aqua jug and bowl sitting on it. Sure beats having the napkins tucked away in a drawer, Claudia. (I hope you are feeling better today.)

I just did the same thing with linen tea towels and didn’t even sew them together. I laid them end to end and had an instant, vintage runner! ~ Maureen

So pretty! I’ve been collecting vintage hankies to do the same thing. Now you’ve got me inspired to get them sewn! I love the pattern and color of your runner– you can’t go wrong with aqua!

Great idea Claudia, and so pretty.

I especially love how you have echoed the turquoise/aqua color with the bowl, and the pitcher.

A simple idea (so simple that I’m sure many of us wouldn’t have thought of it!) that turned out to be really wonderful, the runner looks fantastic and now you can enjoy the design (and remember the kindness of the gift) all the time, way better than them being hidden in a draw.

That is lovely Claudia. I really like that blue. I also like to use vintage napkins for pillows, they are just the right size.

So much nicer to have those pretty napkins where you can admire them every day rather than having them tucked away in a drawer. That shade of aqua is just perfect and they look great as a runner on your dining table. Best wishes, Tammy

P.S. Your pups are so sweet. I hope you are feeling better. Lots of colds have been going around at school, hitting folks hard. Thankfully my family has managed to keep those yucky viruses at bay. Take care!

This turned out beautifully, perfect for your kitchen table Claudia. If I could just get Bob’s work off my kitchen table (grrrr – hear me moaning here!) I might consider doing this with pretty cloth napkins I have and seldom use.

Off in a few days so may not be able to comment for a while – Internet not available in the remote camps! Will be thinking of you dear friend.
