Egg Cups, Part 10

March 27, 2023 at 8:00 am by Claudia

I’m writing a couple of posts ahead of time and this is the first: part 10 of our little tour.

• The egg cup on the left was a gift. It is Holland mold egg cup, one that would be distributed for customers to paint and decorate by hand. This one is beautifully painted and the painter’s name is on the bottom. It is one of my largest egg cups. One-of-a-kind.

• This little one is much like the bunny I showed you the other day, the one who reminds me of Scout. It’s tiny and made in Japan.

• One of the first cups I purchased, by Holt Howard. It’s quite large. It was in mint condition until, several years later, I knocked into it and it broke. Sigh. I have glued it back together and, fortunately, the damage is in the rear of the cup. These still pop up fairly frequently on eBay.

As you read this, I’ll either be on the bus headed to NYC, or in the rehearsal space meeting the cast and listening to a first read-through.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Good luck as you travel to your new gig and begin working with the cast. I like the idea of owning the egg cup that someone lovingly painted.

Claudia, I don’t comment often, but I don’t feel my day is complete until I’ve read your post.
I never get tired of seeing and reading about your egg cups.
After all these years I’m convinced that this is what my next collection will be. I’m enjoying it already. Thank you!

These ceramics (vases, figurals like a dog or a child, etc) which customers would paint and decorate by hand … they always intrigue me. No egg cups here, but I do have several pieces I’ve picked up at estate sales, secondhand stores; inherited in the family. Some are fairly large pieces. I’ve been surprised how un-amateurish a lot of it is; the unknown artist really painstakingly did some good work, just like your egg cup. Was this a fad in the 1940s-50s era?

Hope wherever you’re sitting at this moment finds you in good commuting weather, Claudia. We had WIND start up hard about 5:30am PST. Something ahead of the storm/rain that’s coming in later tomorrow I guess. Yep, just saw the wind advisory on the nat’l weather service page; will be windy til 3pm today; oh well, I hate the wind but can endure it if it’ll only last that long! But it’s chilly right now outside, in the 40s. Cold wind.

Strangest sound just now: Train. We never have trains in this town anymore. Til lately. (At 6am, some people aren’t liking being awakened! I don’t mind.) Something to do with them carrying rock and gravel to repair where a creek washed out track and trestle a couple of months ago, or so I hear. All that wild Southern Calif weather we’ve been having (L.A. has now had 26 inches of rain!). Freight cars open at the top carrying one heavy load after another. It’s the sound of my youth when we had so many fruit-packing houses going strong day and night, mostly in summer, the trains pulling up, all those fruit crates being loaded aboard (oranges and lemons). Rumble on the track; the sound of the engine horn at the crossings. Love it.

Hope you’re having a good, productive day. I’m about finished with the spring cleaning (and my husband is so glad). But then we get to move outside and start there, if the weather cooperates!
Can you rest on your way home after work? Have a good rest of the day.

It’s such a delight to see your egg cups. I notice new things every time. I must admit that the Disney set has a special place in my heart! Collections built over time are my favorite too. Is it that we appreciate each acquisition a little more than if we were able to get them all at once?

I hope your coaching is a delight. It’s fun to get away and be productive.

Spring and winter are still volleying our weather pattern here and we never know what to expect from day to day. Will we awaken to snow or sun or wind? It’s a pretty standard high desert spring, really albeit with more snow than usual. I’m taking advantage of the springlike days in the garden and holing up with art and crafts on the inclement days.

    Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
