Elusive Butterfly

August 15, 2014 at 8:09 am by Claudia

I date myself by using this post title. Does anyone else remember that song, sung by Bob Lind (I had to look it up) and released in 1966? I wasn’t a big fan, but I do remember it clearly.

Anyway, during the past few days, I’ve been looking for elusive butterflies around the property. You remember the huge Eastern Tiger Swallowtail that I sort of missed out on because I had Scout on the leash and no camera? Yesterday, I saw two Swallowtails.

swallowtail black

The swallowtail in black – his wings were fluttering so quickly that I could only grab a quick shot. You can see the amazing colors near the bottom of his wings. One of the wings was torn, but it didn’t seem to be slowing him down.

swallowtail full

This one, on the other hand, stayed still long enough for me to click the shutter on the camera. Isn’t she beautiful? She’s not the same one I saw the other day. That swallowtail had blue markings at the bottom of her wings. This one looks to have a little wing damage on the right.

swallowtail two

It must be this elusiveness, coupled with sheer beauty, that makes butterflies so fascinating. Flitting here, there, and then, before you can snap your fingers, soaring above the bushes and the trees and…gone.

I can’t tell you how many times this week that I’ve seen one and run into the house for the camera. Even Don is trained. He was coming out the door to go to the car yesterday. I was trying to snap these pictures. I held up one hand and he froze in place until I was done.

If only Scout minded so well.

And how about this guy?

W - green critter

He was on the outside of the bathroom window. He was rather long – about 3 or 4 inches – and he hung out there for quite a long time.

Amazing.

I’m off to the Apple Store to have the Genius Bar take a look at my computer. I’m pretty sure I know what’s wrong. I only hope it doesn’t cost too much! Have to have my laptop or this blog won’t get written. Cross your fingers for me. I’m hoping I can hang out while they fix it and that I don’t have to leave it overnight.

Forgot to add: new post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page.

Happy Friday.

Ha! Dating myself as well since I do remember that song (but didn’t care for it). Beautiful pictures Claudia. Butterflies are so, so pretty. Good luck with your computer woes and have a wonderful weekend.

I remember the song as well, I had been out of high school one year in 66. I liked the song, actually! I was working in a flower shop then, saving money for college, and can remember listening while making deliveries! Memories!!

Oh! I loved “Elusive Butterfly”! I was just 11 years old at the time LOL. I must say that I also loved “Like A Rolling Stone” in my 11th year. A hint of things to come …

    Happy Friday!

I’m watching monarch butterflies flitting here and there on my neighbors fence where passion flowers are crawling along. We have had so much rain that it looks like a jungle around here. Everything can only be described as “lush”. Usually in August in Florida the grass is a crispy brown unless it is irrigated. Lawns could be mowed twice a week this year. The flowers are beautiful. Butterflies are so interesting to watch. Last year I had a zebra butterfly come to feed on my red pentas every day. This year I have a big fern in that place and no butterfly, sob.

I don’t know the song…probably just as well. I was more a Beatles girl…and Beach Boys! Your butterflies are gorgeous. All I have around here are our hummingbirds…they bring me great joy! Crossing my fingers! ;)

I do remember the song!! It seems we have had a lot more butterflies and bees this year, and both make me quite happy! Also, we have our first Morning Glory blooms! I don’t know why ours always bloom so late in the summer. I always associate the beginning of the school year with their blooms, while others seem to have them much earlier in the season. Just something to look forward to, I guess, which isn’t a bad thing!
Hope the computer issue is a minimal one. Please tell them they must give you a “loaner” if they need to keep it so we don’t miss a day of your posts! :-) Have a great weekend!!

I remember the song too..not one I was crazy about but it wasn’t annoying to me either..you know how sometimes you dislike a song so much that it just irritates you every time you hear it..Good luck with your computer..if you are missing tomorrow we will know what happened..

So far so good. But the jury is still sort of out. I’m going to monitor it and if it acts up, I’ll have to take it in again.

I’m so glad you love butterflies! The darker butterfly could possibly be a Pipevine Swallowtail. I have a butterfly nursery in my yard, I grow Dutchman’s Pipe for the Swallowtails and Asclepias for the Florida Monarchs. They bless me by creating their chrysalises at different points all over the front porch, and it’s always such a thrill watching them break out and dry their wings before flying off.

Do you have a butterfly bush in your yard? They LOVE those, easy to get good shots when you’ve got a butterfly bush.

Yes, we do have a butterfly bush, which is where I saw the first butterfly. He was huge, but I couldn’t get to my camera in time to get a pic.

I remember that song. I was 10 in 1966, the proud owner of a new transistor radio and just beginning to pay attention to what was on it. Now I hear it every so often on the “oldies” station in the area, along with other 50s through 80s music. But lately, I’m starting to hear 90s stuff on the “oldies” station. Hey, what gives? The 90s??? As Jerry Seinfeld would say – Really???

Love the flora/fauna pix today. As always. Have a great weekend! :>)

Haha. Well, I guess it’s all relative. My niece [born in ’92] tells me the 90s are most definitely oldies to her generation – some of whom are apparently now doing radio-programming! :>)

As always, beautiful pictures. That last guy you pictured looks like a katydid. It is interesting to hear about your morning glories. I have some planted and they flower from spring thru fall. They always go wild with tons of runners and I spend most of the growing season pulling those suckers up to prevent being taken over by vines. Huge black bumble bees seem to love them too. Patty Mc

Where do you live? Here in the northeast it takes a while for morning glories to bloom. They aren’t perennials here (unlike the ones we had in San Diego) so mid-August is when I start to see some blooms.
And it is a katydid! Good call.

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
