Endless snow. Remember that song, Endless Love ? Never a favorite. I was forced to sing it at more than a few weddings; yikes, that brings back awful memories. Well, the melody is once again in my head with the lyrics morphing into ‘endless snow.’ Perhaps I should rework all of the lyrics in a plaintive and depressing tribute to the non-stop snow that is falling?
It started snowing late yesterday afternoon and hasn’t stopped. So far? About 8 inches, with the same amount predicted to fall during the course of the day.
Nothing like hauling on one’s boots and jacket and hat at 6 am to shovel snow in Dame Scout’s mini corral. Believe me when I say I’m really enjoying being back in the house sipping some morning coffee!
This is what happened when I aimed my camera out the kitchen door to take a shot of the snow this morning. I rather like it: white snowflakes, shots of gold, the red shed in the background.
We’re over the snow, of course. Yes, there is a beauty in it. There is beauty in any landscape and we try to remember that as we face the endless mounds of snow on our immediate horizon. Nevertheless, the snow, and the feeling of being housebound, along with the colds we’ve both been battling, makes us want to scream. A little.
Will the chairs on the funky patio soon be buried? It’s starting to look that way.
Oh winter, you are no longer fun for me. I try, I do. When you first arrive, you are delightful. That first snowfall? Lovely. Magical. It’s as if we’re seeing snow for the very first time.
But along about February? You have overstayed your welcome. We look at all of the snow and wonder how it will ever melt, especially when we are saddled with below zero temperatures. It seems impossible, even though we know it will eventually melt away.
But maybe not until April.
I have some work coming up in Manhattan/Brooklyn that will require me to be in the city on and off for a week or two. It looks like it will start at the end of this week. The theater company will put me up on those nights when I have to watch evening performances, which is a relief, as I wasn’t looking forward to traveling back home in the wee hours of the morning. I’ve done that before and it’s exhausting. I’ll know more about my schedule later today. I’m working with a company I worked with a few years back when I coached The Merchant of Venice, starring F. Murray Abraham. This production is not Shakespeare, however. I’m going in to listen to the actors as they work on the stage and make sure they can be heard and understood in the theater’s new space in Brooklyn. I’m excited about seeing that space, which opened last year.
There’s a new post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page with more interesting links concerning the newly discovered novel written by Harper Lee, as well as some other links you might enjoy.
Happy Monday.

Wow! That’s a lot of snow. So far, here in normally snowy Alberta, we’re buried but this year, just a bit here and there. Lovely but I’m sure before April, we have a blizzard, long overdue!
Endless Love …. that was our wedding song. And when we renewed our vows, our kids played it. I loved it then but have so many more favorites now. But it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Best wishes with your new adventure coming up!
Claudia says
If it was your wedding song, I will have kinder feelings toward it, Chy!
Chy says
So far, it’s worked. We’ll celebrate 31 years of marriage this summer!

That is a LOT of snow! Maybe getting away for a few days will help. Maybe. There are some signs of spring here which is nice.
Claudia says
Maybe. Though NYC in the winter isn’t always easy…
Eileen says
We haven’t gotten too much snow this year. At least you can look out and see something beautiful..we have a dirty left over snow yard which is a bit depressing although as soon as I post this we will probably get a few inches. I don’t mind snow if I don’t have to drive in it. The neighbors all here snowshoe but ours sit in the basement waiting for us. I think it just something we all need to embrace.
Think warm thoughts,
Eileen
Claudia says
Boy, I hate driving in it, too, Eileen. Remember the days when it was no big deal because we were young and thought we were immortal? xoxo
Linda @ A La Carte says
Love your photos but I remember living in the North and being ready for winter to go away! I’m excited you have some work coming up. Hope the travel isn’t too hard. Stay warm and enjoy the day as best you can. At least all of you are together!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Yes, that’s really nice! Last year at this time, we weren’t.
Myra says
I remember when we put on either snow tires or chains for your kind of weather!!
Claudia says
Neither of which we have!
Doris says
Snowing here also in Ct. This is the third Monday we don’t have school. I will enjoy my day off by shovelling and getting to sew. I can’t complain. Doris
Claudia says
Enjoy that day off, Doris!
Vicki says
I’d read about the next storm and my heart sank for you. It’s A LOT of snow, it seems to me. Similarly, I had two unrelated acquaintances who faced the same thing in the states of Washington and Oregon who got to the point of barely being able to cope with another rainy day and a complete lack of sun. One of those people did leave and return permanently to Southern California…21 straight days of heavy rain and gray took its toll on him, even though he was a young career guy who was ready for anything. The other had no choice due to a work assignment of her husband’s, and I think the only thing that helped her get out of bed was that she had, at the time, little children who needed their mommy to be up and functioning. Maybe this will be the last big snow of the season…wouldn’t that be a beacon of hope! Just stay warm and safe. Wish you didn’t have to travel in it but your work sounds exciting, Claudia. Will look forward to your future ‘reports.’ You’ll have to tell us how your new bag works out, carrying all of your ‘stuff.’ Glad Don can stay home to look after Scout and the house. Try to visualize the beautiful flowers in Spring…it’ll be here before you know it! I’ve loved your recent photos of the bluebirds; you take exceptionally good photos!
Claudia says
Thanks, Vicki! I don’t think I’ll be in the city until Friday. I’ll know more later today.
Cross your fingers the weather allows me to get into the city!
Janie F. says
I can’t imagine having to go out in the cold and snow so early in the morning. Dame Scout is very loved! Hope you and Don get over those colds soon. I’m feeling much better today. The new mattresses may just be the best purchase we’ve made in years. No more aches & pains that keep me from falling asleep or wake me up.
Claudia says
I well remember that feeling, Janie. Actually, there’s not a day that goes by that we don’t thank our lucky stars for the new mattress. So glad you’re enjoying yours!
Donnamae says
Half of that snow you have, rightfully should have been ours…we have very little snow, compared to our norm….I’m so sorry…and thank you! If you feel you need to scream….open a window or door and scream…it’ll feel good! This winter has definitely been an unusual one…interesting effects of climate change…but difficult ones to live through. I have a feeling this will be our new norm.
Well, at least a change of venue should perk you right up! It sounds like it couldn’t come at a better time! ;)
Claudia says
I do feel the need to scream and might do when the noise of the snowblower drowns it out!
Donnamae says
Go for it! ;)
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, that 6:00am photograph of the falling snow is stunning. It looks like Fine Art photography. Amazing. You are gifted.
Claudia says
Oh, thank you so much, Nancy!
Vera says
Hi Claudia, So sorry that you are getting dumped on once again…but, your pictures are beautiful. I especially love the first one with the golden color. My car was covered in ice this a.m., but the roads were fine. We are forecast to get sleet/freezing rain/snow later today and tonight. Waaahhhhh!!
Claudia says
Waaaahhh, indeed!
Betsy says
I am so sorry Claudia. Normally we’re right where you are at this time of year, buried in the snow. But this year. Not so far anyway. We’ve had an inch or so here and there, but yesterday it was 63F! In February! In the mountains of Washington State! Unheard of. We’ve broken records for warm temps the last three days. But I feel for you because I know that eventually we’ll be back in the thick of it again. Also, I’m heading your way next week to visit our daughter. I sure hope the snow will be gone by then. :-) Hang in there, spring is coming.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
Not soon enough, Betsy!
missy george says
For some reason, I think of you as being in NC !!! Duh!! With day trips to NYC and all that snow, you must be in New England…Double Duh !! Sometimes it takes awhile….Have a wonderful week..We lucked out and got a little rain.
Claudia says
Nope. NY. It would be hard to commute in and out of NYC if we lived in NC, Missy! xo
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Oh, I am so sorry you got even more of that 4-letter-word stuff!! Keep that picture of your little patio space so that in July you can show us a side-by-side shot. Just keep dreaming of the flowers which will replace what you see now.
Yay on some new work which isn’t too far away. I’m sure that will help a bit with the cabin fever we are all experiencing. The walls seem to creep in a bit more every day. For the shortest month of the year, February always seems to be the longest to me.
Claudia says
It is endless, Chris. And we’re only in the beginning of the month!
Barbara W. says
I love your photographs of the shed – some of them would make really lovely Christmas cards.
I’ve never tried endless Christmas, but I’m kind of done with the whole endless winter thing.
Staying indoors by choice is one thing, but having to stay in starts to wear a bit. I look forward to more of your pictures of the big city!
Claudia says
It wears me down a lot, Barbara!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I was hoping that you wouldn’t get so much snow this time..but what can we do about it??..I hope it doesn’t keep you from getting to your work in the city..Love the pictures Claudia..Stay warm and safe friends..
Claudia says
Hopefully, all will be fine when I have to hop on the bus or the train, Nancy.
Annie Graham says
The snow does look so beautiful and magical, however I’ve never lived anywhere where it snowed for long. I don’t like to drive when the roads ice up here and/or bad rain storms. I never thought twice about that when I was young either.
Your photographs are gorgeous. I hope the weather holds up enough so your travel back and forth to NYC isn’t too bad for you. Enjoy the process of your interesting sounding job at the new theater. Annie
Claudia says
It will be very, very cold this weekend, but hopefully, no snow.
Janet in Rochester says
I’m done with the snow too. Weather forecasts are boring – same reports day after day. And after getting a later-than-usual start this year, it’s really piling up here in Rochester. We’re running out of places to put it. The drifts/snowbanks are getting so big they’re hard to see around when you’re pulling out into traffic etc. Can-Not-Wait until the Great Melting begins!! This year, even drippy greenish-brown mud will look good compared to endless towering mountains of white! PS – love the little section of picket fence against your shed. The perfect little “composition” piece – you should always leave it right there. Hope you & Don are both feeling much better. Enjoy your day!
Claudia says
We do always keep it there, Janet. I think it’s been there for over five years – put there on purpose by moi!
Janine says
Absolutely love the stunning photo of the snow you took. I have never seen snow and here where I live in South Australia we are about to have a heat wave. Your photos are wonderful and greatly appreciated on an extremely hot day. Love Janine
Claudia says
Glad they help to generate a ‘cooling’ feeling, Janine.
Susan says
Speaking as an Australian whose country is experiencing record breaking temperatures (up to the high forties celcius today in parts), and fires that destroy thousands of acres of land, destroy homes and kill or maim livestock and wildlife, I think I would like to experience the challenge of snow just for a change.
Claudia says
I imagine you would, Susan. You are certainly dealing with terrible extremes there.
But remember, snow falls such as this one and the Nor’easter we had recently result in terrible accidents, multi car pileups, with loss of life, no shelter for the homeless, loss of electricity, and frozen pipes, which cause great damage to a home. Not to mention the horror stories of roofs crashing in from the weight of the snow, which now is measured in feet and multiples of feet. Wild animals starve because the winters are so brutal. We are suffering through bitter cold right now, which is only going to worsen as the week goes on.
The snow is pretty, yes, but it can also be deadly. Both the heat and the cold have consequences, I guess.
Trudy Mintun says
I feel for you Claudia. I truly do. Most of our winters are like the one you are experiencing. This winter we are worried about the lack of snow and what it means for drought conditions in the Spring.
Cabin Fever is the worst sort of winter ailment. Other than the colds of course. Colds you recover from but, cabin fever lingers until the snow starts to melt. UGH!
I bet even Scout gets a bit of Cabin Fever.
Tana says
Your red shed was just meant to be photographed! The pictures are just beautiful. Looking forward to pictures of NYC in the snow. If you get the chance. This time of year the only pictures I’m taking is my feet next to the furnace vents and we don’t even have snow. Just rain and dark clouds. You three stay safe.
