Favorite Things

November 14, 2009 at 8:24 pm by Claudia

Time for another favorite thing – our ‘red checked’ chair. I bought this years ago when we were still living in San Diego. I loved it the moment I saw it. The price was great and it was adjustable. But there was another reason I fell for this sweet piece of furniture. My grandparents lived in two different houses during my childhood. Both houses had a den. They had a set of furniture for the den that was exactly the style of this chair. The wood on their furniture was a shiny maple and the cushions were a different fabric, but oh the memories this chair evoked! It was exactly the same style down to the wide arms. One can place a book on the arms, or a drink, or a piece of needlework. I love the arms. (Don’t you wish the arm rests on a plane were this wide?) And I love the red checked cushions.

We had it in our den in San Diego. When we moved East and rented for four years, we had to put many pieces in storage – our little home was too small for them. This chair was stored and we missed its presence in our daily lives. Not long after we moved to Mockingbird Hill Cottage, we rented a truck and drove south to our storage facility. Our round oak coffee table, the loveseat, and this chair were among the things that were packed on the truck and brought to the cottage.

Mornings often find me seated in this chair with a cup of coffee, chatting with my husband. It’s a little worn, there’s a tear in the cushion – but, oh my, is it comfortable and comforting!

    Hi Claudia sweetie…
I love this chair. It is not worn honey it is called loved. Your chair is very loved. My husband calls it broken in. He loves a comfy chair. We had a rocking chair when we first got married with big arms like this. I rocked all three of my babies, in this chair. Sadly when we moved from Oklahoma, it was broken in the move. I have always missed that chair. It had a cloth seat and back that could have always been replaced when it was worn.

This chair fits your cottage Claudia. I just love it.

    Country hugs sweetie…Sherry

I think that looks like the most comfortable chair. And, those “arms” are so perfect and handy! I love the fabric even with the tear. Such sweet memories come with it. Isn’t it fun to remember things from our childhood.

    Happy evening.

Claudia, I love this chair. It’s really neat. It looks like an indoor (modified) version of an adirondak chair, and those are some of the most comfortable on earth. I like the color of the wood and the red checks of the custhions. Neat piece!

BTW, we missed you on Pink Saturday…

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

Having arms like that would be so nice on a chair. I wonder why they don’t make them like that anymore.

Loved this post, Claudia! My favorite chair (which I gave to my son) belonged to my Great-Grandmother. It was a green overstuffed upholstered chair from the 30’s with nicely carved details. I used to sit in it sideways with my knees over one of the arms.

So I understand completely why you love your chair so much! I’m glad it has a special place in your cottage, and that you get to spend time enjoying life in it. :)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
