Another preview – another great audience. And simply incredible performances by the cast. I love this musical.
Two more performances to go today and then I’m on my way home tomorrow. As always seems to be the case with me, I’m looking forward to getting back to the cottage, but sad at the thought of leaving this lovely cast and creative staff. I’ll be back to check in, of course, but I feel like I’m leaving my children and I’m not entirely comfortable relinquishing control for a week or so!
Yesterday, I traveled to Union Square and then made my way to one of my favorite shops, Fish’s Eddy. Fish’s Eddy is located on the corner of Broadway and 19th – it’s been there for years. The store is all about dishes and glassware, new and vintage, with a dash of activism and humor.
You know how much I love china.
The activism I mentioned is evident in one of their display windows (if you follow Fish’s Eddy on Instagram, you’ll see more of their activism.)
They recently held a book launch for the new book Why We March. All proceeds, by the way, go to Planned Parenthood. I bought a copy.
The entrance. Don’t you just love the tile?
There’s a lot of treasure here.
Mugs galore.
Gorgeous dishtowels.
New designs like these cardinal glasses. Yes, I wanted some, but I have absolutely no room for them.
Vintage restaurant china. Be still my heart.
I did buy two pieces of vintage china (like I need them!) I’ll show them to you when I get back home. Right now, they’re wrapped up in paper and I want to keep them that way as I have to transport them home via the bus.
I could have gone crazy but I held back.
I remember coming here over 20 years ago when I was living in San Diego. Every year, my colleague and I would go on an ‘audition tour’ to audition students for the MFA program. New York, Chicago, San Francisco. If I had a big enough break in the day, I would dash down to Fish’s Eddy.
Since I’m usually in and out of NYC in one day, I rarely have time to visit favorite shops. This was a treat.
Small world story: This morning, I ran around the corner to the coffee shop to get some coffee to go. There was one other young woman waiting in line behind me. Suddenly, I heard, “Excuse me…are you the dialect coach for Hartford Stage?” Stunned, I turned and answered “Yes!” It turns out she is Olivia, one of the students from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford and she was in one of the Shakespeare productions…Romeo and Juliet? I’m not sure., but it was recent. But as soon as she said her name, I remembered her. What are the odds?? And, she just moved to NYC yesterday! We had a nice chat.
I’m continually amazed at what a small world it is – even in the Big Apple.
Okay. I’m off to get ready for two performances of Anastasia today.
Happy Saturday.

I have to get to NYC one of these days…so many unique shops! And I love unique shops. I haven’t been to NYC since 1964, for the World’s Fair. Has it been a week already, Claudia? Seems like only yesterday you left for the city. Has Don reached La Jolla yet? Safe travels for both of you.
Claudia says
No, he’s in Arizona, I think. He’ll drive through CA tomorrow and arrive in LaJolla on Monday. Rehearsals start on Tuesday!
Vicki says
What’s HIS housing? Did he have to get an apartment? Is it okay to ask this? Just curious, of course!
Claudia says
All theaters have to provide housing for actors who are in the union. He’ll have an apartment.
Shanna says
Love the photo-visit to Fishs Eddy! I haven’t been in over a year and I miss it. A couple of those cardinal glasses need to come to my house! Cake stand? Yes, please!
Claudia says
I love those cardinal glasses!
Mary Vieira says
What an extraordinary place! I would be in heaven too and buy way to much. The tea towels alone, I am a weakling for tea towels.
Claudia says
I like them, too – but they always seem to get stained here at the cottage.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
STORAGEWARE Try to contain yourself……. made me laugh!! What a fantastic store. Fun place to get lost in for a few hours, I’m sure. And you are quite strong to hold back. Knowing you have the bus ride must have been what saved you.
Such good news IN the news yesterday. The lack of vote on Trumpcare made me cry a bit. Tears of joy for the many who will continue to have health care and keep the common-sense benefits which the affordable care act do mandate. It IS the law of the land.
Wonderful news on the audience response you are all receiving. How fantastic! I asked you yesterday how we get back to happy again, and I have to say yesterday was a step forward…….
Claudia says
The signs around the shop are quite humorous!
Wonderful news about Trumpcare which such an abomination. At least we got to celebrate something!
Mary Vieira says
They have an online store…..I am shopping
Vicki says
Oh, wow, this is good to know!
Claudia says
Have fun!
Deb says
Wonderful news the show is going so well. I love the shop pictures. I would pick out two sandwich plates, because that’s the size I use daily. Then, a wonderful oversized coffee mug and I might “need” a cakestand to come home with me.
Claudia says
I like those choices, Deb!
Donnamae says
That looks like such an interesting store…the kind you could get lost in for hours. I have this thing for dishes, glassware, serving pieces…it’s a sickness I think. And, just like Wendy….I haven’t been to NYC since the 1964 World’s Fair. Ah….that was a long time ago! Enjoy the performances! ;)
Claudia says
I have the same sickness, Donnamae.
Katheryn says
What amazing shops Claudia. Thank you for taking photos. I have always wanted to go to that city and you bring the photos of the cool places to buy so many things..those dish towels were a bit pricey but so cute !
My late daddy born, reared, and always lived in VA or mainly NC said as a young traveler he saw someone he knew everytime he visited NYC, if he stood for a while at a certain intersection in the city. That seemed so odd but someone I knew it it be true. And now that you too, are running into people you know in that very very peopled place= is a big understatement ! I am going to ask Charlie the “camera guy” best friend if he has heard of you; his partner works for a daytime talk show..as a co-
producer. He is freelance as you are. NYC is is home now and has been since he left UNC Chapel Hill yrs and yrs ago. For all I know he has heard of the fabulous Claudia!
Will you be ready to go back to your cottage? I would assume so, but I swear you get to enter two very different worlds.
Claudia says
Same here. I ran into two people I know while there. Out of the blue.
I’m sure Charlie hasn’t heard of me – I work in the theater and not in the television world.
Mare in Oregon says
Your day yesterday sounds wonderful – wish I could have been there with you. Fish’s Eddy looks like a store I could frequent daily. Good to hear that you are so pleased with the play after all of the hard and dedicated work of everyone. I cannot believe your hotel room – is there any way 2 people could survive in it? Safe trip home.
Claudia says
I know that Don and I couldn’t survive in that room. Two tall people? No way!
Betsy says
Lucky you! Seeing and hearing the music of Anastasia over and over must be like a dream. I read somewhere they are putting out a CD at the beginning of the summer. Can’t wait!
Claudia says
They’re recording it in a couple of weeks.
The music is non-stop in my head right now and though I absolutely love it, I wish it would stop!
DONNA says
My kind of store! I wish I lived closer. Yes, it is a small world. I’m actually surprised you don’t have people coming up to you wherever you go, Claudia, simply because your blog is so popular! You are pretty much a star in the blogging world! Enjoy the rest of your time in NYC!!!
(P.S. I loved loved loved those bird glasses!!!!)
Claudia says
Those bird glasses are right up your alley, Donna!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I am so happy the previews are going well. I know you will miss the cast and crew when you head home tomorrow. Oh the shops you love are one’s I would also spend hours in. Dishes! I love dishes and even though I’ve curbed my collecting of dishes I would still enjoy looking and maybe finding a little treasure or two (or three)! I will be buying the cast recording when it’s available!! Hugs!
Claudia says
They’re recording it in about two weeks, Linda. I can’t wait to have a copy.
Vicki says
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it ten times, you have one INTERESTING life, Claudia!
Thank you so much for highlighting a ‘local’ store in NYC. How would the average tourist ever know about a store like this? If you ever have a list in your mind of stores you want to go to there, or have been and loved them, like this one, please do a list for us! I can’t imagine being able to have accessibility to all kinds of wonderful shops and stores in such a vibrant, humming place…and then there are the museums, the parks, the restaurants, the buildings/architecture; too much to detail on what I’d enjoy. It would be wonderful to be able to go to NYC and stay for a couple of months so that you could do everything you’d ever dreamed of there but, alas(!), few people can ever come up with that kind of opportunity. (Although, ‘if you dream it, you can make it so’ – don’t know where that quote came from but it sticks in my brain…)
An aside: When you leave your car at the train station for several days, back nearer to home, is the parking fee astronomical? Just thinking of the costs for same, say, when leaving a car at LAX for a week or two…
Claudia says
The only way I can stay there is when I’m working on a show and they put me up. Otherwise – too expensive!
I didn’t take my car. Parking in town, near the bus station, is hard to find. So my neighbor drove me there on Tuesday and I took a cab home yesterday.
Debbie in Oregon says
I’m so glad Anastasia is going great. It must be so exciting to be a part of such an amazing production! I hope they have a very long and successful run.
I’ve never even heard of Fish’s Eddy … what a fun looking store. I know I’d go nuts there. The picture with the cake stands … oh my goodness!!
Claudia says
I know that tickets are sold through December and they’ve opened up ticket sales for January 2018.
monica says
What a nice store. I could spend a day or two in there with no problem. But at this stage in my life I need nothing from there, but would still find an excuse or two. :)
The tile in the entranceway has to be the original. Do you know?
It was close to 80 degrees here today. My winter coat went back in the closet for good this time.
You are so lucky to be able to enjoy and spend time in NYC while you are working. That is such a plus.
Have a safe trip home,
Monica
Claudia says
I think the tile is original except for the tile that says the name of the store.
Melanie says
What a fabulous store! As I was going through the photos, I thought to myself, “I could go crazy in there.” Then I saw your sentence – “I could’ve gone crazy but I held back.” lol
You sound upbeat and in your element. I can just tell from the tone of your writing. :-)
Claudia says
Thank you Melanie. The week was very tiring, though, so it’s good to be back home. The energy of NYC is wonderful but it’s also draining after a while (if you don’t live there.)
Nancy Blue Moon says
What an amazing store..I would be wandering in there so long that I would probably get locked in at closing time…lol…don’t laugh..That really happened to me at one time!
Claudia says
I can see that happening very easily!
Regula says
It is my mother’s wish and plan to go to New York with my sister and me. :-) If we go, I must have a look at this store. I’m following on Instagram, so I don’t forget about it. Have a safe trip home! Regula
Claudia says
Thank you, Regula!
Julie says
Hi Claudia. I loved the photos of that gorgeous shop. I’d kill for one of those divine blue glass cake stands!! Love Julie
Claudia says
Beautiful color!
Debbie says
When I started reading this, I thought “Wow, Fish’s Eddy is really built up since I’ve been there”, then I realized you were in a store and not the little town up on the East Branch of the Delaware!
Claudia says
A longtime store – Gosh I think they’ve been around for 25 years – maybe more!
Dianne says
Congratulations on this wonderful show and on all that brings to it’s lucky audiences. Exciting happiness all around!
That store is amazing; not something I could manage in one day. It would take multiple trips for me and would love getting lost in this Nirvana. So much to see and purchase decisions wouldn’t be easy! Dianne
Claudia says
No. I was tired that day, and I needed to get to rehearsal, so I had to be efficient with my purchase decisions.
Teresa Kasner says
That china store looks amazing.. I’d be naughty if I went there. If I ever get to NYC there is one place I’d like to visit — The Fountain Pen Hospital – 10 Warren Street, New York, NY 10007. You can get vintage pens and all kinds of inks there.. I bet they have stationery too. Have fun getting back home. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
Claudia says
That must be near The Mysterious Bookshop – which is also on Warren St. I’ll have to look for it, Teresa!
