Flickering

March 2, 2018 at 9:07 am by Claudia

I’m getting this post up quickly as we’re in the middle of a Nor’easter and I’ve seen the lights flicker more than a few times. It’s windy out there. (Not a happy camper.)

It’s a strange storm because it’s impossible to predict whether it will be snow, ice, or rain from town to town. The Hudson Valley is a large area and it has mountains and valleys. I’ve been watching our local website (Hudson Valley Weather (dot) com) which is excellent and incredibly detailed and the two guys who run it say they’re never seen anything like this. Just south of me it’s snowing. Here – as of right now – it’s raining. But it clearly snowed during the night, so it’s a snowy, slushy, icy mix out there. And the winds are picking up. I’ve watched it rain, then snow, then rain again.

Where is Don when I need him?

If I lose power, I lose power. At least I have Stella, who can provide some heat and cook some food.

All in all, it’s a scary weather day and I’ll be glad when it’s over.

I know we can have scary weather in the spring and summer, too, but I’ll be very glad when the season changes to spring. Enough already!

Anyway, that’s all for today, my friends. I’m going to sign off and hit ‘Post.’

Happy Friday.

Wishing you a safe and warm day Claudia. I hope the storm isn’t too bad. We’re in the same situation today. Huge storm warnings, everyone is getting ready to be hit hard but we don’t really know what will come our way. I have to teach a workshop this afternoon so going in to town this morning before the snow hits. Hoping it holds off until I’ve headed home @ 3:30 but only time will tell what will happen. We were having such good weather. Sigh ….

I hope your power stays on as you weather this storm. We had rain for two days but the sun is shining today. I will be staying the night with the Grands while Sara and Blake take a much needed evening off. I’m up to it being evening and then bedtime! Don was so so good on the Today show as was the whole cast! Things to do before babysitting tonight (including a nap before I go over!) Hugs!

We had a couple of episodes of heavy rain but now it’s cleared until tomorrow. I don’t know how I’d cope with your East Coast winters…you’re so brave! Update from yesterday… my kitty’s wound is from a bad tooth root. She has bad bad dental health in the first place from living in the streets before she was rescued and I adopted her and from genetics. She’ll have oral surgery Tuesday.

Claudia, I am back. I wrote you that quick comment about Don, because I was so excited…and a Dr. was coming to my house for a health evaluation(crazy) I will post about that. I didn’t have much time before the Dr. got her. So I came back to read your post. Oh I hope and pray it doesn’t get scary there for you. I just beg you to let your water drip, if you lose power. That way your pipes might now freeze. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Bless you, xoxo, Susie

I always let my water drip when it’s cold. Though, if we lost power, it wouldn’t help because our well needs an electric pump to supply water, Susie.

My husband was never home for the bad storms. When the kids were tiny (4 kids, ages, 6, 4& 1/2, 3 and 1) we had a horrible storm. No husband for thousands of miles. A bolt of lighting hit in the middle of the street and took out the electric box under our stairs. Scary night. The kids slept through it, but I was up all night. No power. But a man from church got the box working. I was so happy to have power. Good luck. Nice to have a stove that works. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

bless Stella! I’m so glad you have her!
I have lived with both types of storms… upstate NY… and about 3 years in Northern Minnesota
when it stayed minus 40 below zero for several weeks. the sun would shine and you could still freeze your lungs if your mouth wasn’t covered! we used to spit to hear it crack! kids you know. they don’t realize the seriousness of it! adults miserable. kids having fun! LOL.
I now have lived in Tornado Alley for years and our ‘tornado season’ is about to start.
reading about your trials makes me realize I would rather live where it can and often does ALL blow away at the drop of a hat during ‘our season.’ yes it’s devastating often here. but still I would rather live with THAT than the constant cold and snow I remember from winters in NY and MN. I’m just not up to that anymore! we have ice storms in winter. but they never last longer than a few days.
    stay warm dearest bean!

Yes, we seem to be getting rain coast to coast. This is our first rain in SoCalif since early January and it’s only been these two storms; we’re dry as a bone; I think I read it’s the driest winter ever here. Yet we have the concern for the burn areas. I’ve called the fire chief and had a chat; so has my neighbor. We’re worried about a debris basin above us but they’ve dug it deeper and enlarged it so that if we get more rain — like a lot; it can still happen in March here — it’s prepped to do its job and keep mud out of my downhill neighborhood. Montecito has of course been evacuated; mandatory. It’s been raining since 6:30 pm yesterday PST but it doesn’t seem like a lot to me; it’s consistent but gentle. Nothing like what you’re getting on the East Coast. Gracious, Claudia; have just been reading the headlines about it; you need to stay inside; it looks so dangerous; I’m glad you aren’t on the seashore with these predicted, massive waves/high tides. Will be thinking of you; no fun to sit out a storm alone; I’m sure audiences will probably be down for the musical because people are being warned to stay indoors and not get out.

Vicki, I hope the basin holds all the rain you may get to keep your home safe. It’s raining so hard here in NorCal. Just buckets at a time then it calms down to a steady rain, and then buckets again. Last night there was so much pounding rain on my skylight I thought it was hail. Be careful when you go out….drivers can’t seem to get used to heavy rain when it happens so inconsistently. Both major freeways through my area were closed yesterday due to multi-car crashes and jack-knifed big wheelers.

Unfortunately, I had to go outside a lot – you’ll see why in today’s post. Out of towners might not make it in to shows, but New Yorkers are tough. They’ll still show up.

The storm hit us Friday night and knocked out our power which was not restored until 21 hours later. Thank goodness for our generator which keeps the refrigerator, well pump and a few essentials going for us. Love also that we have a gas fireplace and gas cooktop. Once the power came back on last night it was like heaven! Amazing the things we are so accustomed to having and our spoiled lives. Stella sounds like a good gal to have around!! Hope your storm has now passed as well. Spring is just around the corner…..xo

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
