It’s that time of year when I can hear the honking of the Canada Geese overhead. If I happen to have a camera nearby, all the better. They gather by the river that’s just down the road; hundreds and hundreds of them.
The other day, we experienced another fall event: a murmuration of starlings. As I was sitting in my chair, I caught a glimpse of several starlings flying and landing, taking off and soaring. Then I heard them. I quickly got up and went to the kitchen window and there they were: hundreds and hundreds of them, landing on the grass, then rising into the trees, then flying in a circular, soaring swirl.
It’s amazing. And it doesn’t last long, so you have to drop everything and watch.
I listened to my husband being interviewed on the radio last night. He was on Radio Woodstock. The show was hosted by Lisa Wexler, a musician and the daughter of the incredible Jerry Wexler, one of the most famous producers in the history of the recording industry. Google him and you’ll see what I mean.
Don was on between 10 pm and midnight. I grabbed a portable radio, ran a bubble bath and listened to a chunk of the show while immersed in bubbles. And then I listened to the rest while reading in bed. It reminded me of those days in my youth when an ever-present transistor radio was at my side, always tuned in to our local radio station. There’s something really wonderful about listening to the radio without earbuds or a computer. Just low-tech. The way it used to be.
Don was great, as was Lisa. He talked about his life, Lisa played tracks from the new CD, and he sang live. He also shared five songs/recordings that had had an impact on his life. In Don’s case, most of them were recordings that he heard when he was 12 or so. It was fascinating. As he said, it wasn’t so much that the records were incredibly good or huge sellers, but that they came into his awareness at a point in his life where they resonated with him on a very powerful level.
I love hearing his new CD being played on the radio. It’s as it should be, especially since the title is Ready for the Radio. I love hearing his voice coming out of my portable radio, knowing that everyone listening is getting the chance to get to hear him speak and share his warmth, compassion, wisdom, and great sense of humor.
Good job, Don!
Happy Friday.

We have been watching the geese fly over since the beginning of September. I always stop what I’m doing and watch them. They facinate me. At the coast this weekend, we watched a group of 10 Pelicans dip and dive in formation over the water, I had never seen that before. Your words about Don give us just a hint of the depth of your love for him. I very much enjoyed reading them. How great that his dream is being fulfilled before your eyes. I wish we could’ve gotten that radio station last night. Have a lovely weekend Claudia.
Blessings,
Betsy

Seeing the pelicans must have been incredible, Betsy! The interview will be available via a link. I’ll post that tomorrow and you can give it a listen if you want to.

Love this post. I would love to step inside that second photo. Such great memories, the days of transistor radios. I felt like the luckiest person, to have my favorite radio station right at my finger tips, especially in a time when everything in our household was shared with my brothers! And those special songs that to this day stir my soul with memories of times gone by. Hurray for Don! So happy for you both!
Claudia says
I remember retreating into my bedroom and listening to the transistor radio. Very special memories!
Dana says
I listen to the radio all day long and would listen to it all night if I could pick up something here after dark! Fall is such a special time of year … today we are hiking in the national park and then having chili at home. I’d have a wood fire in the fireplace if it weren’t going to be so warm today. Your evening sounds perfect, comfy, secure, soothing.
Claudia says
It was lovely, that’s for sure! Have fun hiking, Dana!
Laura Caldwell says
Don’s interview sounds great! It’s not available as a podcast is it?
Claudia says
It will be available on their website. I’ll post a link tomorrow, Laura.

Ah, the ways of nature when seasons change. The best change in Fl has been having windows open so the house can air out. At night we often enjoy a sweet cool breeze. Love that! So happy for your guy about his music. I know you’re very proud.
Claudia says
I am very proud of him! Enjoy getting to have your windows open!

I live just outside of Boston and the pine needles are what’s flying here!! Can’t keep them off the driveway. And everything else for that matter. Just got back from the store and thought of you….., Mallomars are in. Had to buy a box. Best wishes to Don. I know he’s having such fun!
Claudia says
Mallomars were my weight-gaining downfall last winter. I’ll still have some, but I think I have to cut way back!
Margaret says
Eagerly awaiting the link for Don’s interview.
When we first lived in Texas we could hear the Canada Geese flying over in the middle of the night. With climate change, that has virtually disappeared. Pelicans, on the other hand, we have in abundance.
Claudia says
Too many things have disappeared since climate change, Margaret. It makes me sad.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I love seeing the birds like that…amazing to me! I know I will love Don’s CD since I listened to the preview songs! Waiting for it to arrive. I love how proud you are of him!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Can’t wait to hear what you think of it, Linda. I know Don is so grateful that you bought a copy!

What a wonderful evening listening to your hubby on the radio. Life IS good, isn’t it?
I have such fond memories of those portable radios. I remember (back in the 60s & early 70s) taking my radio to bed and trying to find radio station broadcasts from far far away. From KC, I could find stations in Chicago, New Orleans, Dallas. I had stuffed poodle radios….knobs on their noses and I think the tuner on their tummies. All so simple – and so magical.
PS…Here’s hoping my KC Royals can meet up with your second favorite MLB team in the World Series!
Claudia says
Oh, me too! I loved to listen at night because I was told that AM stations could be heard from a great distance at night. Magical hearing broadcasts from far-away places! A stuffed poodle radio is the coolest!
Game tonight, right?
Deb says
Yes – ALCS Game 6 tonight at 7pm CST here in KC. Royals lead series 3-2. Royals must win tonight or my nails will be gone tomorrow night during Game 7!

The weather is so mild on average here that the geese no longer migrate. They stop by for a flying break, experience how nice it is to live here, and never complete the migration. I have heard of the swooping a and fly-boys of hundreds of starlings, but have never seen it. Sounds wonderful. I love birds.
What a calm happy evening of bubble bath and radio. I have a couple of radios my late Uncle used to own. He even built his own radio out of a cigar box. My Mom has that one.
Claudia says
That is cool – a radio out of a cigar box. I know that building radios was a big deal in the 30-50’s. I think my brother tried making one and my grandfather built a shortwave type of radio. My sister has it and gave it to me, but I forgot to bring it up with me when I drove back from Florida.
Barbara W. says
‘Murmuration’ is such a great word!
I wonder if all the Canadian geese from our local conservation area are stopping in New York to catch a show before their yearly vacation down south. We’re expecting rain/snow this weekend, so I look forward to your posting the link to the radio show.
Claudia says
I love that word. I don’t know who thought of it, but I think it must be a poet!
Janet in Rochester says
Your husband is becoming [even] more famous, Claudia! That’s so terrific. Just promise us you’ll be the same wonderful, down-to-earth person now as when we see you two on the Red Carpet in the future! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Claudia says
If I EVER get on the red carpet, I’ll be sure to stay the same, Janet!
Donnamae says
I would imagine it would be thrilling to hear your hubby on the radio…not just talking, but singing as well. Do you still have your transistor radio? I don’t think I do….but wouldn’t it be fun to hear Don on a transistor…just for fun? ;)
Claudia says
I don’t have that radio, but I do have a small portable battery operated radio that also has shortwave. That’s what I used to listen last night.
Sue says
How wonderful for Don that he is finding continued success in something he obviously loves so much!
Love the pictures you posted today. Your beautiful photos are one of the reasons I stop by each day. They often put me in a great mind-set for the day ahead.
I hope you both have a wonderful fall weekend!
Claudia says
I’m so glad you like them, Sue. And if they put you in a good mindset, all the better!
Doris says
It’s wonderful the radio time Don is getting. Sounds like a lot of fun for him.

It is. He is really relaxed about the whole thing. He has a lot of fun there.

More Fall-ness tomorrow, Vicki!

Your geese have been flying by our Texas home every day around dinner time.

How can they be there when they’re here? I think they’re everywhere!
