Friday Bits

February 2, 2024 at 9:11 am by Claudia

♦ We woke up to the smell of propane. When the tank is running low, the smell becomes more intense. I quickly checked  when the last delivery was. It was on November 21st. Since we get it every two months, it turns out the delivery is ten days late, as it should have been on January 21st. So I was on the phone at 8 am and we are now on the schedule for today. I guess I have to go back to calling them to make sure we’re on the schedule.

We were awakened by the sound of a truck backing up at 5:45 am but thankfully, after a half hour or so, went back to sleep. So we got up later than normal and that, coupled with the propane problem, has thrown me off. It doesn’t take much these days!

♦ I’ve done more research on the Shirley Temple doll and she is definitely a knock off, or ‘clone’ as I see in some eBay listings. The middle of her body is cloth and Shirley Temple dolls were all composition – no cloth. And the face molds of the Ideal dolls looked much more like Shirley. (I can see why my mom was pissed off!) Her hair is a bit more blonde, as well, though all the Ideal Shirleys were honey-blonde. Her hair is a bit brighter. She has the dimples, though. I took the rollers out and she’s looking okay, but I had to reset a few of them, so I’ll have a photo for you tomorrow, after I’m sure the curls are dry.

♦ One of my Blythe friends had some extra Mickey Mouse mouse ears, so I bought a pair and Chloe is modeling them. Too darned cute! I remember watching The Mickey Mouse Club every afternoon when I was a kid. I thought wearing one of those white sweaters with my name on it and a pair of ears would be the coolest thing in the world.

♦ I’m not sure what Lucy and Zoe are looking at, but they look disapproving. Shortly after this, they disappeared for a while. I have no idea what they were up to. Suffice to say, they returned with a look that said they’d dealt with whatever was troubling them. There’s a lot of activity here during the course of a day. With 18 girls, you can only imagine!

I suspect they’ve been in the kitchen checking out Shirley’s transformation and peppering her with questions.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Are you thinking you might sell your Shirley Temple doll after she’s rehabbed? Just curious. I wouldn’t be the buyer, but you might have others.

No. She’ll stay in the family. I’ll leave her to my sister.

Well, propane is not the best thing to smell in the morning…or any time! Good thing you were able to get on the schedule. Those Mickey Mouse ears are darling! We are having lots of rain right now, expecting more for several days. Happy Friday!

We’re supposed to not have any rain, but it’s rained a bit every day. But you guys have a LOT of rain coming.

      Stay safe, Barrie.

I love how your girls all interact with each other. Eighteen girls is almost like a boarding school, lol. No telling what shenanigans they can get up to. Fun! Chloe, Lucy and Zoe are so sweet. Looking forward to seeing Shirley’s curls.
Hope you and Don enjoy your weekend. Our nearest groundhog, Wiarton Willie, has predicted an early spring. It feels like it’s already arrived. Blue sky and sunshine here today and a few degrees above freezing. Hugs, Elaine

glad you caught the odor of propane and will get a quick refill. not a fun way to start the day, but it’s taken care of so hopefully that feels better to you and don.

with your attention to detail, i am sure shirley’s curls will be fine. the blythe girls look darling, even with a bit of disapproval (maybe they were caught in the middle of some mischief planning and are trying to hide their guilt?) or jealousy. glad you have them, too.

been feeling like spring around here lately. more snow melting, more sunshine and pretty blue skies. more birds and deer. more squirrels joining earl on the deck … burl (baby earl) and merle. easier and less scary to walk outside (though still careful about the melted stuff re-freezing). feeling a bit more inspired yesterday and this morning to get some things done and have ideas to work on. think i’ve been needing a break so i took one. now at page 488 (of 1353) in “war and peace”. knitting another hat … in december i bought a bunch of chunky yarn at a great price and am determined to use it all up by the end of this month (i love to knit, but less so with this thick yarn in hot weather). if someone needs a hat, they can have one; otherwise these hats will go to my church’s sale in december.

hope you, don and everyone else have a great, easy day and stay safe.

    kathy

dear Claudia/Don — so glad you all still have a good sense of smell — really takes something strong to get our attention — like a choc cake baking, haha!! your girls are all so cute — really you have 18 of them now?? I think they could really keep you busy — especially with your creative ability — glad you have them and that you are willing to “share” them w/all of us. Thanks. Stay safe/healthy

Chloe makes a cute Mouseketeer. I was also a huge fan of that show. And, whoa, waking up to the smell of gas is scary. Got a feeling you’ll need that newly full tank for February. To me it’s the worst month of the year as far as cold weather and blizzards.

This morning we got a “frosting” of snow. Disappointing because of all the melting that went on this week. It was so thrilling to see the grass again after so many weeks being buried in white stuff. The longer hours of daylight, and the spring flowers in pots at the grocery store, are making me anxious for spring.

    Take care,
    Kay

Kay, the propane is for our vintage stove. The heat is powered by heating oil and a burner.

      Stay safe, my friend.

Your first comment “woke up to the smell of propane” put an image of Robin Williams in my head. His famous quote from Good Morning Vietnam “I love the smell of napalm in the morning. I know your situation is not funny and glad your oil is on the way. One thing good today if you believe the legend about Punxsutawney Phil we are in for an early spring.

Yes, I read that! i don’t know if I believe the legend, but Elaine, a reader from Toronto said that their local groundhog prognosticator, said the same thing!

      Stay safe, Olivia.

Its too tall a shelf and there’s not enough room in the den to get all of the shelves in the picture. There are one or two videos on my IG account where I show them on the shelves. It’s “sophieandherpals”

      Thanks, Gayle.

I watched Mickey Mouse, every day. With ears. I wish I still had the originals!

The girls all look darling. I think Lucy might be my current fave! Love her wild and crazy long curls!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
