Frigid Weather = Nesting

January 27, 2022 at 9:53 am by Claudia

It’s very, very cold this morning! I’m wearing my flannel pajamas and a thermal top, a hooded sweatshirt and heavy socks and I’m still cold. This is an old house and it takes a long time to warm up on mornings like this one, where the temp is below zero.

It’s been a strange January. In the earlier part of the month, the temperature was warmish for this time of year, but that soon changed. It’s been frigid for most of the past two weeks. We’ll have some relief next week.

And we have a storm coming up the coast, but there’s a lot of uncertainty about just where the snow is going to have the most impact. As of this morning, all we’re supposed to get is wind and an inch of snow, but I suppose that could change depending on the storm’s track. Our snowblower is currently giving us problems, so we’d prefer the current forecast.

Hard. Darned hard.

It’s not helping that the other side of my lower back is giving me problems. I’m sure it’s exacerbated by working on the puzzle, so I’ve been working on it for 10 minutes at a time only a few times a day; sometimes standing, sometimes sitting on a cushion and limiting my work to the lower part of the puzzle which is closest to me.

I’ve started Julia Dahl’s book but I’m really just at the beginning. We’re watching something called Archive 81  on Netflix – a sort of supernatural/horror series. It’s pretty good. Last night, we realized that we knew three people in it – one is an actress that Don has worked with, and the other two are actors I have coached rather recently. That was fun!

Thanks so much for all your comments yesterday. I intend to have one of these ‘What are you reading?’ posts at least once a month. I sure learn a great deal and I know you do, too.

Stay safe (and warm.)

Happy Thursday.

If you don’t want a small woodstove, maybe a small electric radiator to take the chill off. We have one on our bird porch, which is heated, but sometimes needs a bit more heat for the parakeets. It’s adjustable, has a timer . It seems like an easy solution if you’re freezing every morning. When not in use, store it in a corner.

Thanks, Barbara. We’re not freezing every morning, only when the temps are extreme, but your suggestion is a good one!

      Stay safe and warm.

I have a Vogue puzzle of a different cover and it was so hard. When I got to the background, I gave up which I never do. I may try it again now that I see you doing yours.

I’m going to stick with it though I may scream during the process, Julie!

      Stay safe.

That IS a toughie but it will be beautiful. I just got a new New Yorker — “The Art Store” — that I will probably start today or at least by the weekend. We just started the new season of “After Life” and I watched the new Netflix movie “Munich” — which really was disappointing. It was no “Darkest Hour,” that’s for sure. I want to watch “Passing” and “The Other Daughter” soon enough. And less so “The Power of the Dog,” only because it’s not totally my thing but it has a wonderful cast, director and buzz.

Our wind is terrible. Our temps are low teens but with the wind chill the temp feels 0 or below. My birds are packing it down! A good day to be in and read or maybe even bake and warm up the kitchen!

For some reason, and I love Benedict Cumberbatch, I’m not into The Power of the Dog. Maybe that will change, but now? No.

It’s cold here, though a bit warmer than it’s been, and we have snow on the way.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

I know just what you mean about The Power of the Dog. I love Cumberbatch, too, and I’d love to see his other film (about cat artist Louis Wain — if I remember correctly and I might be way off!). But this one? Not so sure.

Good luck with the snowstorm coming your way. I hope it’s neither too deep nor too windy.

The previews I’ve seen make me uncomfortable for some reason…go figure.

My husband has lower back pain from sitting and purchased an Xtreme Comforts lumbar support pillow from amazon. He says it helps and I’m pretty sure it’s returnable if it doesn’t work. that type of pain is the worst.
We are hoping for 2-4 inches of snow vs. 6-8! Fingers crossed!

That puzzle does look hard but it’s beautiful.

It sounds like your house probably isn’t insulated very well. Old houses generally aren’t. It reminds me how much tougher life was then.

Speaking of a tough life…we are watching 1883. Its on Paramount + and it’s really interesting about the pioneers traveling the Oregon trail. It stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill along with Sam Elliott. You would never recognize Tim, and Faith looks pretty rough too. It’s a prequel to Yellowstone. I would never have survived traveling by covered wagon and all the hardships they endured. They have tried to make it as historically accurate as possible.

I also just finished binge watching Brother and Sisters on Hulu. It’s an old series, probably 15 years or so. Sally Field is the mother to 5 adult children. I don’t recall watching it before. I thoroughly enjoy anything with Sally Field. I envy you getting to meet her.
    Take care

It’s the basement and crawl spaces that aren’t insulated very well – the rest of the house is fine. Mice get in and eat the insulation. But that’s life in the country.

I watched parts of that series when it was on. I loved working with Sally.

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

My Google emails are doing very strange things! I will not rely on finding your blog in my emails any longer, in fact I can’t rely on my emails for anything? I found most of them in spam and now they’re gone! Go figure.
I just finished reading Something to Hide by Elizabeth George. It was a long book, 675 pages, but well done. And, actually, an easy read. An interesting subject that I had previously known very little about .

I love Elizabeth George – she does tend to write long books, but they’re worth it.

      Thanks, Suzanne.

That puzzle looks like a real killer to me. Good luck with it.

I have back problems as well, so on the advice of my doctor I started stretching exercises. They are simple, and seem to be helping. I haven’t had a muscle spasm in months.

I laughed when you described what you were wearing this morning…sounds like my outfit Monday through Wednesday! Stay warm! ;)

And I stay in it for hours…

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
