Garden Gone Ga-Ga

July 1, 2009 at 6:47 pm by Claudia

You are looking at part of my overgrown-garden-gone-wild back at Mockingbird Hill Cottage. Unless you have been ignoring all talk of weather, you know that June was one of the rainiest months on record back East. This has resulted in lush growth. However, that growth along with the fact that my husband has left the gardens alone because he is afraid to pull a viable plant rather than a weed has resulted in a lollapalooza of plants. Don has said to me more than once, “You’ll have a lot of work to do when you get home.” Sounds ominous, doesn’t it?

I will be so happy to get my hands in the dirt again. Of course, I will probably let loose with some bad words when I see it in person. But mostly, I will be happy to trim, snip, pull, yank, and shear back.

I see some bee balm, some coreopsis, some catmint. I’m not sure about the rest. There are also garden beds in front of the shed, on all sides of the porch, on the side of the house and by the kitchen. Oh boy.

No, this is not in my garden. This is in front of the San Diego Zoo. I walk right by these elephants (there are two of them) every day. This guy on the right is obviously tired from a day of walking around the zoo. Good place to rest.

Tonight is opening night for Twelfth Night (my favorite Shakespeare play.) It will be fun to watch it without taking notes – just as an audience member.

Your garden looks perfect to me! I am not much of a gardner, well, I’ll be honest, not a gardener at all, LOL but I enjoy a beautiful one. Love the elephant too! :) Hugs, Marsha

Your garden looks like our front of house beds. We have several rock gardens, too. The rain has been relentless providing us in the Green Mountain state with unchecked growth. I don’t know a plant from a weed myself here so it should be interesting when we can finally attack the growth. You will have lush gorgeous beds to work on, I’m sure.

I hear it is suppose to be dry next week.

    Hope the opening went well.

Overgrown garden, or not, I’m sure you will be so glad to get home. As Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) would say, “There’s no place like home.” :)

Love the pictures of your garden and when it came to the picture of the huge elephant topiary I started cracking up- thought it was in your garden until I read further! Hey- don’t you think it would be a nice addition to the Mockingbird Hill cottage?!

Your garden looks wild but… pretty. On the second pic I see Monarda (red flowers). I love them. They smell so good and they have a very interesting shape.

    Claudia,
I like the laissez-faire approach to gardening. Let the plants go wild like a natural cottage garden! But that is the resistant part in me that HATES weeding! I probably hate weeding because in the part of Texas where I live we haven’t had a good rain in weeks. The grass is turning brown and the ground is so hard that when you attempt to pull up a weed, it just breaks off just above the dirt’s surface!!! You’re lucky to have a lush flower bed in your front yard weeds and all!

Oh how I would love to see that giant Elephant! You simply must send that rain over here as we are in Stage 3 of water rationing. I think your garden is lovely!

Not many people get to see aan elephant everyday, I’d say you are very lucky. My garden is a disaster as the deer have been eating every flower I have all summer long. I have a bunch of cropped off plants and nothing else.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
