Glimpses of the Garden

July 12, 2010 at 8:48 am by Claudia

We had a nice gentle rain the other day. Yesterday, the sky got all dark and thundery and we sat on the porch eagerly awaiting a big old rainstorm. We got a few drops. The weather report assures us that there are thunderstorms on the way over the next several days. Please?

Today: 90 degrees. Don’t like.

How about some garden photos? I’ve been walking around the garden the last few days, snapping away.

While I was away, my husband kept telling me about this plant that was taking over the garden. I suspected it was my Jacobs Ladder and I was right. Yikes! When I got home and investigated, I found it everywhere. My first go at the garden was mainly yanking out some of the over-eager Jacobs Ladder. It is a fabulous plant for under my maple tree because it works so well in the shade. It just needs some firm discipline from Mama Gardener – me.

This hosta was already established when we bought the cottage. I’ve added several more since we moved in. The area right by the porch entrance is shaded by the maple and hostas work very well there.

Coneflowers
Bee Balm and Catmint
Evening Primrose
Lady Elsie May rose

Day Lilies
The first bloom on my David Phlox

My ever-faithful companions on porch patrol. They’re on top of things, so don’t try any high jinks on their watch!

Did you have a good weekend? Mine is always good if there is some time with my garden and my loved ones.

Claudia- your garden pictures are gorgeous! I can’t believe the size of your Jacob’s Ladder! I hope the rain finds you this week- stay cool and remember to keep drinking water if you’re out gardening in that heat ♥

    Hi Claudia:
I love your garden photos. So beautiful! Kes said to tell Riley and Scout that she feels their pain. Hot weather and a fur coat just don’t mix well. Sprinklers help.

Your garden is great. I love the Jacob’s Ladder. It hasn’t rained here in weeks, until today and it is pouring. Of course, today is the day I chose to paint the mural on the windows at the nursing home, so no painting today. I’ll sew instead.

Claudia, I was amazed to see some of the plants that grow here in the desert in your garden. Yours is much more lush than mine though. Beautiful. Great watch dogs that you have. They sit on the porch in the shade, watch and relax while Momma Gardner works…

Waiting patiently for the time when the deer move to another planet and leave my hosta alone! They always chew it down the the ground before it has a chance to even look like a hosta. *sighs*

Hi, Claudia… what beautiful photographs! I loved seeing your garden’s flowers. I’m not familiar with Jacob’s Ladder, but it sure is pretty. We have a few roses (that hate this heat) and hosta plants. In St. A, I planted some pintas that seem to be surviving the heat, though I wish I had planted them earlier this spring so they would be bigger.

Loved the shot of your boys on the porch! What sweethearts they are. And they are both so pretty.

We had a lazy weekend, and I enjoyed it. Mr. Magpie went to the beach, but it was too hot for me. So I hibernated in the AC. ;-) We went out for brunch on Sunday and had delicious omelettes made with artichokes, cheese, and anchovies. That was a treat. Mr. Magpie had just finished up a week long trial so it was a celebration of hard work accomplished. That’s about it. It’s fun to be lazy sometimes.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

Your garden is lovely. I bought a Jacob’s ladder from Target and it perished. Guess I should have put it in the ground.

Sending a big welcome home to you from Frog Hollow Farm! How have I missed your past few posts?? I honestly don’t know.
Your packages(s) of embroidery misc. are ready to mail – FHFB should be taking them to the post office tomorrow on one of his many trips to that building during the day.

Your garden is just lovely, I really liked the combination of the bee balm with the catmint – so pretty. We just bought 3 new perenniels that have an anise scent/taste to the leaves, with flowers that look like a small version of a butterfly bush flowers. The bees love this plant. It’s called Anise Hyssop and loves full sun. The leaves can be made into tea, or used in salads for a sweetly spicy flavor. Ciao, bella!

Hi Claudia! So glad you made it home safely and you are where your heart is! I have been playing catch up here. Love your garden flowers. I used to have variegated hosta and stupidly pulled them all up. Big mistake…now I want to replace them! I have daylilies and lilacs and that’s it for flowers that come back every year right now! I used to have many raised beds of both perennials and annuals but got rid of them. I do, however have a beautiful veggetable garden and that is doing awesome! Your little top of the stair studio is adorable! We have had weeks of humidity here in Maine with hardly any rain. I am so sick of it. The air has been running forever! Stay cool and enjoy those wonderful dogs, flowers, and hubby!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
