Golden

October 2, 2024 at 8:39 am by Claudia

The vibrant yellow goldenrod around the property is keeping me going in the midst of all rest of the flowers and plants fading away. (Impossible to get a clear photo of it – sorry.) On one hand, I’m ready for autumn and the seasonal change. On the other, I’m mourning the last days of my gardens. This change is never easy for me and – I’ll be honest – it leaves me feeling melancholic.

Because it’s been so rainy, I haven’t been able to mow the largest part of the front lawn. I had to wait a day for it to dry out and I tackled it yesterday. The aim was to cut the grass, of course, but also to chop up/mulch all the leaves on the front lawn. The new lawn mower is too low to the ground, no matter how much we adjust the height. So I used the older mower without any front wheel – or is it rear wheel? – drive. I ended up doing the entire front lawn all the way up to the entrance of the secret garden. Needless to say, I’m feeling sore and congested this morning, though I’m pretty proud of myself for tackling it. There will be more leaves, of course, and I’ll have to do it all over again, but for the moment, it looks better out there.

I didn’t watch the debate last night, though I kept up with it via Threads. (Smarmy mansplaining liars aren’t my thing.) We watched the baseball game instead.

The Canada geese are flying overhead much more often these days. The sound of their honking is one of my favorite things. I often see them in the river when I drive to the library. I saw one catch a fish the other day. I haven’t seen the Great blue heron lately. Is he still there or has he moved on to another fishing spot? To be determined…

To those of you who love Louise Penny, her newest book, The Gray Wolf, will be published on October 29th. I will buy it – an exception to my No Buy rule. I have all of her books in hard cover and I want to continue that. I’m on the hold list at the library for Michael Connelly’s newest but it’s a long  list. So I also reserved it in the Large Print edition because that list is much shorter. Frankly, my eyes will probably thank me for it.

Okay. Have to make our second cup of coffee. I desperately need it this morning.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

I’m impressed with your lawn-mowing stamina, Claudia! I’m lucky that my oldest son takes care of that for me.
I started to watch the debate last night but gave up when J.D. just smoothly spouted his usual lies. I knew it would upset me so and right before bedtime is not good! I heard that Walz held his own, tho.
I voted yesterday and am so glad to have that done! Go, Harris/Walz!

Lucky you! We can’t early vote until the last week of October.

      Stay safe, Ellen.

hope that happy yellow goldenrod, your having done a great job mowing the lawn, a second cup of coffee, knowing the latest louise penny book will soon be yours to enjoy and many other good things all help fight the melancholy.

i have my own list of good things here, too. :)

happy, safe wednesday and thursday to everyone.

This statement from Anne of Green Gables comes to mind this time of year “I’m glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

I always feel a twinge of sadness this golden time of year, also.

    Take Care,
    Kaye

It’s beautiful, but a touch sad.

      Stay safe, Kaye.

Your goldenrod makes a cheery picture. We’re going to need some rain soon. It’s a hot week, supposed to be 102° today. I did watch the debate last night. I’ll just be glad when this whole election is over.

Your goldenrod is a real beauty. This time of year, when the flowers fade is hard. But, I wonder (as a northerner), if I’d appreciate flower blooming season if we didn’t have a period of no blooms. Just a thoughtI’m pondering.

We watched the debate…and I have to tell you, I got up several times in disgust. The lies were just too much. Thank goodness Tim Walz was there to set the record straight. The moderators did very little…but they did do some.
I just don’t understand the constant barrage of lies. As the saying goes…please explain it to me like I’m five years old!

We got our Covid and flu vaccines on Monday, and except for a sore arm, we had no other reactions. Yay.

I am excited for the next Louise Penny book. Thanks for reminding me. Enjoy your day! ;)

They lie as frequently as they breathe.

Glad the vaccines are taken care of!

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

I love the sound of Canada Geese, too, on a fall day. They sound melancholy to me. Sadly, even though I live in Canada we don’t see or hear them very often. I, also, order the large print edition because the hold list isn’t as long and the large print sure helps these 78 year old eyes. The only drawback is they are usually heavier to hold. What a wuss I am, lol. Hugs, Elaine

Claudia, thank you for the reminder about Louise Penny’s new book. I had totally forgotten about it.

Like you, I am ready for the cooler days and beautiful colors of Autumn. However, I always hate to see my flowers fading and the loss of lush green trees and grass.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
