My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird –
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast, there the blue plums.
There the clam deep in the speckled sand.
Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,
which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,
which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.
Mary Oliver, from Thirst: Poems
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Don and Scout. Have a wonderful day. I am only going to eat a half plate of food. I hope.
We’ll see how well I do with all the yummy food, Tana. We were good and didn’t make or buy a dessert.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I love Mary Oliver. This is the perfect poem for Thanksgiving. I love the idea of our work being to simply appreciate all the magic around us. Your blog does a great job typifying this view. Today a special thanks to you, Claudia, Don, and Scout, for making every day special, thoughtful and inspiring.
You are most welcome. I think this poem says it all for me. Mary Oliver knows the secret part of me, I think.
