This morning: I woke up before Don, came downstairs, drank some water, started the coffee, and slowly opened up all the blinds in the den and the living room. Then I decided to open the cloth blind in the kitchen – something I don’t usually do that early in the morning.
There was a huge black bear walking in the corral. I gasped. Huge. I thought he/she might be headed for the trash can but, no, he was walking toward the parking area. I ran for my phone to take a picture. By the time I got back, he had passed Don’s car and was walking toward the lilac side of the lawn where he disappeared. I’m sure he headed into the woods.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Talk about being jolted awake!
And last night, after thinking the wrens weren’t nesting in the birdhouse, I heard them singing on the porch. I paused the program we were watching and looked out at the birdhouse and I saw two wrens – one in front of the house and one that flew behind it. This morning, I heard one of them again. He was on the porch and briefly flew up to the perch in front of the house. He didn’t go in.
So. Are they here nesting or are they just hanging out? I’m still not sure.
I dressed a few of the girls yesterday.
Pip. I like her in red.
Maeve, Pip, and Imogen.
All of the girls have been dressed in a fresh outfit. They’re ready for Spring.
Except for Wren. I’ll take care of that today.
You know, a lot of Blythe owners/collectors routinely sell one of their dolls in order to buy another one or to pay some bills. I get it; I’ve briefly considered selling one or two of these girls. But then, I pick up the doll in question and look at that beautiful face and I can’t do it. I’ve bonded with them. I’d be abandoning them.
Just now, Don brought me some coffee and as he left the room, he said “Hello, girls!”
Don has to go to the eye doctor this morning. I have to run to the store.
We’re still resting our muscles and will probably take it easy today. Well, Don hasΒ to. He can’t do any heavy physical activity after getting the shot.
Has anyone seen the May issue of Country Living? I haven’t seen it on the stands yet. I’m curious to see how they styled my two egg cups.
Stay safe.
Happy Monday.

Seeing that bear would have scared me! Good you were safe inside and the bear didn’t damage anything!
Claudia says
Didn’t scare me, though it does take your breath away. We’ve come upon one in our woods. We just backed away.
Stay safe, Ellen.

dear Claudia/Don — WOW !! just about the only critter we have never seen in our yard — a bear!! hope it was passing thru–guess it is waking up, hungry!! glad you don’t have outside pets. have a good day, stay safe/healthy
Claudia says
We wouldn’t leave our pets outside – never have. Bears are spectacular. And the black bear won’t attack unless you get between mama and her cubs.
Stay safe.

In my almost 30 years in upstate NY,I have yet to see a bear in person…since I’m such a fraidy cat that’s probably a good thingπ
Girls look lovely in their Spring outfits.
Claudia says
They’re really beautiful. Although it wasn’t quite light out yet, so I didn’t see details. A couple of years ago, we came upon a bear in our woods. He/She was gorgeous.
Stay safe, Pat.
Verna says
Hi Claudia. Wow, a bear. Used to that here in Colorado, but in your neighborhood? Spring has definitely started!
Our library does not have the May issue of Country Living as of today. They do have the UK issue. Strange.
We had our first hummingbird 2 days ago. And now we have a male and a female buzzing all over the place. Maybe those wrens are just taking time building their nest. If they are staying around, good chance something will happen soon. Our doves have investigated their normal spot, but havenβt started a nest either. Hmmmm. Nature. I love it.
Have a great day!
Claudia says
We always have bears in our neighborhood, Verna. We’re surrounded by woods and mountains.
Oh, how lovely to see a male and female hummingbird, Verna!
Stay safe.
Dee+Dee says
Gulp indeed! I couldn’t envisage seeing a bear on my property. We think it’s exciting if we see a hedgehog!
I’ve looked for your American version of Country Living as if I wanted to subscribe from the UK and the May 2022 issue isn’t published until 27th May which seems really late (and a bit pointless because folk would be mostly likely reading it in June). Weirdly, the April issue came out on 8th April. So, no consistency thereπ
Happy Monday
Claudia says
I doubt whether that information is accurate. Maybe not until the first week of May, but it wouldn’t come out as late as the 27th.
I wonder, though, whether they’re in trouble. Martha Stewart Living just published its last print version.
Thanks, Dee Dee.
Stay safe.

Well, I’ve seen some ‘wildlife’ in my yard for sure over the years (the mountain lions coming into town was just the worst [2009]) but I can definitely say that I have NEVER seen a bear (except in Yosemite National Park); now THAT is a little concerning to me for you two, but I’d have to just understand more of where you’re situated which seems close to open land/farmed land as well as woods. Wow. Ah gee, ‘if only’ you’d been able to capture him in a photo, but at least you actually got the sighting! Gosh, you sure must have to be careful as to where your outdoor garbage/trash receptacles are (with secure lids).
Claudia says
We’re surrounded by mountains and woods. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a bear. There was one in our woods last year that we came upon. We’ve seen cubs. Our neighbors have had mama bears and cubs on their property. This is nothing new, it was just a bit closer to the house than usual and it wasn’t completely light yet.
We’re not concerned. More accurately, we’re in awe.
Stay safe.

Yikes. A bear?! Well, that’s a tad close for comfort, though quite a sight! (I think Maeve might be my fave — that red hair! Smiles!)
I hope Don’s appointment went well. I’m really annoyed with Country Living. In January I paid for (and was cashed shortly thereafter) an $8 subscription (for a year) — how could I refuse such a come on? All that and a tote bag. Well, it’s almost May and I finally did get the totebag early this month but no magazines yet. How long does it take to get on the list? I did complain and they said the subscription would begin in April. So I suppose they still have four days to go. I don’t even like the magazine that well — I just thought for that price, why not? If I get it I’ll let you know — and also, I can send you the pages after I read them so you’ll have extra if you want/need them. Just let me know where to do it!
Claudia says
I wonder if there’s something going on with Country Living? When I wrote to the woman who contacted me initially about the egg cups, asking her when the May issue would be on the stands, I received no response at all. It seems strange to me that the May issue hasn’t been seen anywhere. I mean, May starts at the end of this week! I’ll keep watching and I’ll send another email to the editor at CL.
I just have a feeling that something’s up.
Stay safe, Jeanie.

Oh my!!! I’ll stick with our small animals. Must have been quite the surprise.
I’ve been checking for the magazine here in Seattle also. Not a thing
Claudia says
It was – almost like a dream, especially since I’d just got out of bed and was groggy.
Stay safe, Stacy.
