Hello garden!

May 1, 2012 at 6:48 am by Claudia

Two days at home = two days of mowing. I’m exhausted. And mowing the front yard is extra hard as we have ruts from all the work on the tree and the septic system. No time to work in the garden, but next weekend I am determined to weed and plant my pots and window boxes. It’s been very cold here at night lately but the week ahead promises warmer weather, so it should be okay for planting my impatiens next weekend.

I’m going back to Hartford to rest!

The garden is starting to fill in – lots of green but not too many flowers yet. I missed the bloom of the yellow daffodils, but I didn’t miss the bloom of my favorite daffodils:

They were already here when we moved in. I didn’t know about them until the following spring and I was entranced.

To tell you the truth, yellow daffodils have never done a whole lot for me but these make my heart sing.

The lilacs are blooming. Oh my goodness, what a glorious scent! My little bush is hanging in there but it only has a few blooms. Anyone know the secret to more blooms? Should I prune it after the bloom is finished? I haven’t been home at this time of year for the last 4 years, so this year I can tackle things like that.

Oh, and look what’s coming!

My peonies are budding! For those of you who are new to this blog, peonies are my absolute favorite flower. I. love. them. This cottage came with two peony bushes that are planted close to the road. I treasure them. And I haven’t been home to see them for 4 years! Yes, I know I’m away in Hartford right now, but I can get home for visits! It makes a huge difference in my life. My garden is my favorite place. Gardening is good for my soul. I find peace there.

So here’s to spring at home, here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage!

Don’t work yourself too hard, and remember to take a few moments to smell the flowers…

I completely understand your love for peonies…missing the 30 year old ones from our old building…

But I do have one here, it’s a joy.

Take good care of yourself, in spring there is always so much to do.

I always go by the rule of thumb, prune after bloom. To be on the safe side you should check a good web site like “Dave’s Garden”. I think lilacs bloom on old wood, so you definitely would not want to prune in early spring or in the fall. Lilacs are my favorite!! Good luck!

    Hi Claudia,
I love peonies too! they are just the prettiest flower I think..and your lilacs are beautiful I can smell them now right though the compute screen.
Gary has been working in the yards while I’m at work. He retired last Oct. and is so excited to be able to spend time during the “day” in the yards for the first time. I love coming home to see what he has planted. Yesterday he planted a orange tree and today he is working on planting five pink heather plants and a red azalea. Also tomato’s.
The thing with gardening is we have to plant either first thing in the morning or when the sun goes down, it just gets so hot and I am just the biggest wimp in the heat.
    Have a sweet day, Elizabeth

Aren’t peonies great? I’ve had one that didn’t bloom the first few years and I’m waiting to see how it does after the long hot dry summer we had last year. Good pictures!

Love that little daffodil! My garden had lots of surprises my first spring. I have one Peony and am in love with it! I hope you won’t miss it this year. Lilacs don’t grow well down here so not sure what you need to do. Hugs, Linda

Peonies have such big lovely flowers and smell so wonderful!

Your favorite daffodils look like Poeticus (a.k.a. “Pheasant Eye”).

Here’s a good link for info on lilacs. It covers just about everything!

How wonderful that you had all those lovely faces waiting to smile up at you and greet you, Claudia! Those daffodils are so adorable — it looks like they have a little rim of lipstick on their faces. And the lilacs are so pretty. Welcome home, however briefly!

I know it was a busy time home for you but I think it was a GOOD busy time home. There is something wonderful and sweet about seeing your lawn whipped into shape. It IS never ending though, isn’t it? xo Diana

Claudia, I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to hear you get to go home for visits! Yay! Now you don’t have to miss the whole spring!
I too love lilacs, and I have a small bush that only had 3 blooms this year…lovely and gorgeously scented, but only 3. I too would like to know how I can help this lovely plant.

i love the true narcissi also – I think yours are named Poet or something like that! Glad you have budding peonies – I missed some of mine while away but more are coming along.

BTW, tell Brenda ants on peonies are normal – they will not open their blooms without them – don’t ever wash them off – they usually disappear afterward!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
