Home to a Heat Wave

July 7, 2010 at 2:37 pm by Claudia

I’ve come home to a heat wave. Yesterday it was 99 degrees, but it felt like 103. Today: more of the same. Needless to say, I got to work about an hour in the garden before it became unbearable. The garden looked like a mini-jungle. So I pulled weeds and pruned. There are piles of stuff like this all over the yard:

There is much, much more to do but it’s a start. The grass is browner than I’ve ever seen it – a combination of the high temps so far this summer and the lack of rain. I’ll have photos of the garden when it looks a tad more presentable.

The last opening night went very well and I spent a little time at the party afterward. The next morning, I began my travel day and for once, both flights I was on left early. The flight from San Diego was packed but we still managed to get going and arrive an hour early. Then the connecting flight left ahead of schedule which resulted in my arrival 40 minutes ahead of time. No husband there, as he was in transit; however, we greeted each other on our anniversary. The last few days have been about reconnecting with my husband and my dogs, cleaning and trying to adapt to the time change.

My pal Sue of Vintage Sue read my post about sea glass and said she wanted to send me some. She lives right near the shore. A big, heavy box was waiting for me. If you know Sue, you know she loves to go junkin’ and that sweetie added a lot of fun extras to the box. Forgive the lighting – the room is darkened to save us from the merciless heat.

A close-up of the sea glass.

What the heck is my lens cap doing in this photo? (I’m incredibly spacey the last few days.)

Isn’t Sue wonderful? She’s funny, generous and an inveterate junker – if you haven’t visited her, you must!

My friend Adrian tells me that Ralphie keeps going to the door of my former apartment and looks for me. When he sees the new tenant, he comes back to Adrian with his ears down and his tail stops wagging. I miss my buddy. (Don’t tell Riley and Scout.) I also miss the actors in the company – what a wonderful group they are. But, I am so glad to be home. I’ll have more in the next day or two.

    Claudia, welcome home! :-)

It looks like you hit the mother lode of goodies, and that sea glass is beautiful. I have found bits every now and then, but I’ve also resorted to buying some, too. I love it!

Your yard looks like ours did before it started raining. Now it is a jungle. It’s also not blazing hot, but it is a tad humid out here. Yesterday, it was only 88 on my car temp which is not bad for this time of year in Florida. I deal with summer by becoming an indoor face. I don’t know what people did before AC. ;-)

I had to laugh about your lens cap. I did an elaborate photo shoot, and I noticed afterwards that I had something in the wrong spot which just RUINED the shot for me. LOL! But if you hadn’t told us, I would have been none the wiser!

    XOXO,

    Sheila :-)

I’m so glad you are home and back to work in your garden. Be careful in that heat, though. It’s been in the 90s almost everyday so far this summer here in ET We desperately need rain, too. We may get some this week end. Of course, this weekend we’re supposed to go to the lake.
    Your gifts are fantastic!

Yipppppeeeeee, you’re home, sweets! I’m sure it feels great, but the temps would send me back I think. San Diego is said to be having especially low temps for this time of year.

Welcome Home, Claudia…I’m sure that Don and the doglets are so glad to have you home, but now I’m feeling a bit sorry for Ralphie. Poor guy is missing you now.

How wonderful of Sue to have a homecoming package waiting for you, and all those garden chores with your name on them. Ouch!

Unbearable heat there and here. We know how you feel. Lots of time to catch up on indoor projects for me when it’s hot and steamy like this.

Settle in, my dear. We’ll be waiting to hear from you when you’re ready.
    xoxo

    Welcome home Claudia,

Boy, it’s a good thing you didn’t come to Arizona. We average around 103 out here, but last week we were at 112. Needless to say, it takes watering to keep our lawns green, we just have to resort to really tough Zoza grass so we don’t use too much water. Your treasures are to die for, you are one lucky lady. My doggies are going to the beauty parlor tomorrow, as we usually have them shaved for the summer and we never quite got around to it this year, but they wanted to say hi, and that they are glad you’re with your proper doggies now.

    Hugs,
    Meri

Welcome home Claudia!!! How wonderful that you were able to see your hubby on your anniversary! I echo Julia- be careful in the heat- so easy to get a little too hot and a lot sick! How could the new apartment dweller not want Ralphie to come in and visit them??? He’s such a cutie pie!

Welcome Home my sweet friend. Even though it’s hot, I know you are still glad to be home with your family.

It’s too hot for yard work that’s for sure.

I feel badly for Ralphie… he will mourn the loss of your friendship. Poor baby.

Sorry you had to come home to a heat wave. It’s 99 degrees here in Roanoke, VA as I type this. And our lawn is brown too. So sad.

Glad you are home safe and sound!

    Dear, Dear Claudia,
So glad you made it home safe & sound & even alittle bit early. The pilots must have felt your need to get home to hubby & the doggies so they gassed it!
The 4th of July here was the coldest one that I can remember,
I’m wondering what happened to summer?
Just wanted to let you know that you’re already missed here in sunny, make that, gloomy San Diego.
    Bye for now.

You lucky girl you! You should be getting something from me soon. You guys now know what Texas feels like this time of year, normally anyway. I guess we’re getting the tropical rains. You relax. (I know you won’t. Probably have worn out that toilet brush.)

    Hi Claudia,
So glad you’re home and happy. I feel sorry for Ralphie though, maybe you’ll be able to visit him next time? Be careful in that heat, I worked in the backyard last week when it was hot here and over did it big time. Here’s some nice cool CA weather from me to you, it’s 78 here today. How about a Drumstick to cool you? LOL.

    Hello Sweet Claudia….
I have so missed you. I am thrilled you are back and will be up and blogging soon.

I am still on lockdown to the house. It appears it is going to be another week after tomorrow. Thsi week starting tomorrow will be with NO voice at all. My voice is very hoarse, today so squeaky that hardly anything comes out. The pulmonary doctor sent me to an ear, nose and throat doctor who went down my throat and looked around. That was a fun experience believe me. Well he said everything looks fine except my vocal cords and the coughing has strained them horribly. He says I should not talk for a week. He would confer with Dr. Glover the pulmonary doctor, and they would decide what to do with me tomorrow. July 19th seems like a long ways away, but he say to whisper is worse on my voice than to just talk, so I guess I will follow instructions.

Now, this sea glass is the most beautiful stuff I have seen. I love all the glorious colors. What fun it is. You can use it in so many places.

The spoons are so precious and look at this pot holders, oh what you can do with all these treasures. You are one LUCKY gal sweetie. The little creamer and sugar bowl would make precious pinkeeps. Just the right size for sure.

Stop by soon. I can’t wait to see your pictures of this trip. I know you had a fun time. Did you ship any boxes home?

Many hugs sweetie and so much love, Sherry

Yipeeeeeee. I’m so glad you are safely back home. I was getting a little tired of taking care of the watering, pruning, weeding in both our gardens while you were gone….te-he…. plus, you do a much better job.

Big Welcome home hugs to you. I actually love the picture with the camera lens cap in it. Just like some of the many I have that I don’t share.

Relax, enjoy you time with hubbie and don’t worry the garden will still be there tomorrow…and well, it will probably be hot again.

At least we are getting rain at night. Rainie-ist season since like 1894 here in Chicago for June. Record…

Off to check on those Basil Muffins,
    Kate

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
