Hostas are filling out in all the garden beds. I love them. I can imagine having a shade garden comprised of only hostas. There are so many varieties and they’re such dependable and sturdy plants.
It’s raining again. Sigh. Apparently there was a loud thunderstorm this morning before I woke up, but I didn’t hear it.
I’m a bit behind on my gardening “To Do” list, because of my sprained hand. I can only do the kind of thing that I can easily pull off with my left hand. Yesterday, I donned my “poison ivy clothes” and yanked a whole bunch of it. And then, later in the day, I used my pruners to trim some brambles/wild roses that had grown by leaps and bounds. I am going to have to ask Don to help with weeding the garden beds where I will soon sow zinnia seeds. And I will need his assistance when I plant the pots for the secret garden – which I plan to do in the next couple of days.
He is in charge of all the mowing. But I’ll soon be back at it. I miss it!
A week from today we’re going into the city to see the matinee of Mother Play, starring Jessica Lange, Celia Keenan-Bolger, and Jim Parsons – all of whom have been nominated for Tony awards for this production. We’re really looking forward to it.
I just heard some screeching noises and, sure enough, the two eagles are perched on top of my neighbor’s tree. We rarely see them, let alone see them twice in a week’s time!
Let’s see, what else? I just finished The English Spy by Daniel Silva. I’m going to return it today and pick up another Silva that is waiting for me, however, I might have read it already. We’ll see.
The peepers are winding down for the season. I guess their mating calls are no longer necessary. Last night, one lone peeper called occasionally – that’s it. I’ll miss them.
Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.

hope your hand heals quickly and in the meantime there’s something to relieve the pain. and of course it’s your dominant hand, right? ouch!
more rain might be a message for you to take it easy, read a book (i hope this daniel silva is new to you after all).
those hostas are beautiful and look well-loved. what a pretty picture.
a play sounds fun, something to look forward to and then experience. hope you’ll get a chance to visit with your friend jim, too. :)
wrote a very big check on monday afternoon to cover my final earthly arrangements. not fun, but good to have in place and paid for.
on a happier note, no raccoons have been found on the deck the past several nights. i think sweeping the dusk just before dusk is helping. i do hope they find food and that it’s elsewhere.
we’ve had a bit (maybe half an inch?) of much-needed rain here and i’m happy about that, too. this morning it’s nice and cool and that feels good to me.
heading out to the stores in an hour or so. hope to beat the after-work crowds (most grocery stores around here have sales on wednesday or that start on wednesdays so people can get ready for the weekend). then i can spend the afternoon and evening with members of my family. :)
hope you, don and everyone else have a fun, easy day. stay safe!

I’ve been weeding a lot this week because there are a lot of weeds! I just try to do 30 minutes to an hour each day as it makes my back stiff. I’m getting there, tho, and I will be so proud when it is finished and, hopefully, looks nice.
Hope your hand is better soon but don’t rush it!
Stay safe, Claudia!

A little at a time sounds wise, Ellen!

Hostas are just fabulous. I have a small hosta garden in the back (though it rarely lasts the summer as the deer love them as much as I do! Rick’s are enormous and ready to be divided. I might see if he can transplant some at the lake this summer.
I’ll be back to weeding today too, after back issues kicked in. If I can get just a little more done, I can start doing some mulch, and maybe slow the weeds a bit.
The play sounds great — you’ll love it!
Claudia says
Mulch may not be happening here this year…we’ll see!
Stay safe, Jeanie.

Beautiful shot of the hostas….they do look very hardy. I pulled out a bunch of old geraniums, so I need to finish getting all the tangle of roots. We’re supposed to be near the 80s by the end of the week so I’ll wait till then. It’s a small area so it shouldn’t take long. It’s great you got to see the eagles again. Hope your hand is feeling much better soon.
Claudia says
Thank you, Barrie.

Your hostas are lovely. They just look so cool, calm and collected. Lovely you’ll be seeing Jim again. We had a thunder storm last night around 12:30. The rain is making the rhubarb grow. Time for a rhubarb and strawberry pie. I’m having trouble finding the frozen unsweetened apple juice and I’d like to make Don’s pie. It is so delicious. Pamper that hand. Don’t over do with the weeding and be careful in the poison ivy patch. Hugs, Elaine

Thanks so much, Elaine.

I’m a fellow hosta lover. Yours is lovely! While I started with only one forty years ago, between splitting and buying more varieties I have quite the hosta collection now. And, always willing to add more. Fortunately, I have several gardens in which to plant them. It’s an addiction I think. Agree?
I’m glad you have a play to look forward to….and to personally know some of the cast….what a bonus.
I’m happy to hear that Don is willing to lend a hand with the gardening chores lol. Hope yours heals soon. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Yes. I have them by the shed, on the other side of the house under the kitchen window, and in the front garden beds. One of them was here when we moved in, so it’s been around a long time!
Thanks, Donnamae.

I sure hope your hand heals very soon. My sciatica is keeping me from doing the outside work I need to do too. It’s frustrating when you’ve waited all winter to get out there.
Some of our hostas, of which we have many patches, are quite far along in their growing. Last night we had a hailstorm and, as I viewed the damage this morning, I was dismayed to see lots of hosta leaves with holes and shredded edges. Last year deer ate our biggest patch in May so that was it for the year. Grateful the other patches are just beginning to poke up.
Just as I’m doing with my back, you must rest your hand as much as you can so it heals quicker. Meanwhile, I guess we give the husbands “to do” lists of stuff we’d rather be doing ourselves.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
I’m so sorry about your sciatica, Kay.
Thank goodness for husbands who are ready and willing to help out!
Stay safe.

Hope your hand is 100% really soon. We have returned from our Boston/Philly trip and have to do some catch up with spring planting. It’s a hot (for us) week with day temps in the high 70’s. I’m loving it after cloudy days back East. The day we flew out was the only day with clear blue skies but it was also the start of a short heat wave in Philly.
My daughter has tried hostas and they didn’t take where she put them. We’ll try where we had to take down a Japanese maple. I was so sad about it. The stone pines on the other side of the fence blocked most of the sun and my maple wasn’t happy at all.
Claudia says
I’m so sorry about the Japanese maple, Wendy. They are truly beautiful trees.
Stay safe.

I wonder if the eagles are nesting nearby? In the town I lived in most of my life there was a wooded area with a pond. Two eagles started showing up there, and eventually built a nest. A local couple who lived in the area monitored the eagles for one of the wildlife organizations. The eagles kept coming back year after year.
I love hostas too. If I had a large shaded area I would have a whole collection of them.
I hope your wrist feels better soon.
Claudia says
We’re pretty sure they’re nesting nearby – we have a river across the street from us and another just down the road.
Stay safe, Denise!
