How to Make a Safety Gate for your Porch

April 16, 2012 at 7:30 am by Claudia

I wrote about this for the first time 3 years ago. Since that time, my readership has increased and I thought it was worth a second visit. I think it’s a neat idea. Like many of you, we have a porch and our dogs love to be out there. Sometimes, when I’m working in the garden or mowing, I put the dogs on the porch so they can be ‘with’ me. But we had a big archway/entrance onto the porch that needed to be secured. We needed some sort of gate.

A baby gate? No, although I thought about it briefly.

Here’s how we solved our problem. Our porch has white columns and a white, almost picket fence-like railing. So we took a trip to Lowe’s and found a piece of picket fence that was a bit damaged and asked if we could have it. I think we paid about 5 dollars for it. (We had already measured the opening and knew it would fit.)

So you see how the rails extend a bit beyond the actual pickets? I had an idea. I bought a couple of these metal pieces (don’t know the official name of them) and attached them to the columns that create the opening to our porch.

If you know the name of this thingamajig, let me know, please! Anyway, I figured I could just slip the ends of the rails right into these slots. And it worked.

The gate is secured, the dogs are safe, and the picket fence works beautifully with the style of our porch. This is a great idea for anyone with children or pets.

Because of intermittent internet access at the hotel while they are upgrading the Wi-Fi and having to move to a new room twice in two days, I’m terribly behind in reading your posts and commenting. Hopefully, things will be better when I get back on Tuesday.

By the way, on the way home yesterday, I was asking Don my usual questions: Have the tulips bloomed? Have you seen any daffodils yet? Is there any grass growing?

Answers: Don’t know. Don’t know. Don’t know.

When I asked why, he said, ‘because I just don’t notice things like that.’

At least he’s honest.

Happy Monday.

Is there a husband in the world who does notice those things?

When I was in the class camp in February, my husband let die my very young avocado plant although I had put it on the counter and next to the coffee machine he would use more than once a day!!! I had got the plant from my son David, who had grown it from an avocado seed after he had eaten the fruit. I haven’t giveen up on the plant, and fortunatelly, it is resurrecting. Tow tiny leaves can be seen by now. :-)

At least your tulips and daffodils don’t need a human hand as much as a fragile plant in a pot.

Your gate does the trick and it looks great as well. What a clever idea, Claudia.

That’s a great idea Claudia! I could use 2 of those to put at each end of my porch just so my girls can come out in the evening if we are sitting out there. Thanks!~Hugs, Patti

I love your gate, Claudia. Brilliant just like you! Poor Don! Why do you ask him questions like that? How would he know?!!

That fencing is an excellent idea. I need something like that for my deck at the lake house and that would work perfectly. Thanks!

This is a great idea Claudia! Although my yard is fully fenced so Bentley is always safe, my Mom’s yard is not and this idea will be perfect to keep him safe when he visits his “grandma”. Thanks!

    Big Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

Hi Claudia. Thank you very much for the well wishes. I really want my energy level up so I can still be creative. Today I managed to merely undo the gray yarn and rewind it ready for a new project. Creative Hugs…

That is hilarious! Typical “MAN” answers… at least he is macho enough to say.. I don’t notice.
that must be why you love him so!

I think this gate is AWESOME! I’m trying to decide if I want railing completely around our porch– two issues, the chickens come up there and leave their ‘calling card’ so the railing and cute gate would be great. And it would keep the LITTLES ON THE PORCH…when I could be right there with every minute.
The only problem would be the porch swing… a railing all around would certainly curtail any ‘wild swinging’

    thanks for this tip~
Thanks for stopping by ‘Corn’ too!

Bob’s exactly the same when it comes to noticing things around the garden……………….and it annoys me because it’s all right there in front of his eyes! I’ve spent hours out there this past weekend, he helped some too, and I have to say that my efforts paid off as it’s looking really pretty now the pollen has been washed away, lots of deadheading and trimming done, chair cushions freshened, new bright green hanging Boston ferns added to the porch yesterday. today I may shop for my annuals as the temps. are up in the 80’s and I think the danger of a frost is long gone.

Hope life is going to get brighter your way dear friend –
    Love, Mary

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
