Well, it’s been a hellish week here at MHC which explains my rather prolonged (for me) absence. Sunday night I had an all night long bout with gastric problems and vomiting. I had had another experience like this when I was in Wisconsin, but this time it was worse. Monday we went to our local Urgent Care and the Physician’s Assistant strongly suspected gall stones (as had I.) But I didn’t get any better. I was very weak, had no appetite and by Wednesday night I was running a fever. Off we went to the ER where an ultra sound revealed that yes, I had gall stones but more problematic, I had a stone blocking my bile duct which was causing acute distress. Oh, and I was jaundiced. That had happened sometime that day. It’s a good thing I had no awareness of it. Don said he noticed it when we got to the hospital and wisely decided not to tell me. I was admitted and on Thursday I had a procedure in which I was knocked out and some wonderful tool was sent down to the bile duct via my throat and the stone was removed. Today, I came home. I am exhausted as I had very little to eat all week and had very little sleep. The doctor insists that my gall bladder will have to be removed but we are going to try some fairly radical diet changes in the meantime. I’d like to avoid surgery if at all possible.
The blockage explains a lot of annoying problems over the last year and the ER doctor said it probably had taken at least that long for it to get to the point it was on Wednesday night. And you know, I just didn’t feel very good most of the time I was in Wisconsin.
I haven’t been a hospital patient since I was 8 and had my tonsils removed.
I’ll probably not blog again until next week. I need to sleep and regain my strength.

Oh my goodness, yes, take a rest!
That procedure to remove the stone sounds incredible. I had stones too but instead of exiting via the duct as normal the little devils were slowly burrowing their way through the wall! If you do have to have surgery I can tell you that once you recover from that (I was on a plane for a holiday in New Zealand 10 days later) you really won’t miss it, I had imagined all sorts of dietary/digestion problems but have had no issues at all. However I agree best to do what you can to avoid the surgery if you can. Good luck!

Claudia,
So sorry that you have been so sick but glad that the cause has been found. Hopefully you will not need surgery but if you do please have it. I waited almost too long to have this hip replaced – not a smart choice on my part.
Take care my friend.

That is exactly what happened to me, and I had the procedure to remove the stone in my common bile duct. They did go ahead and remove my gall bladder the next day since I had been sick so long.

Hi Claudia,
Take care of yourself…the gall bladder seems to be a problem for a lot of folks.
I’ve been out of the loop for a few weeks…Thomas was sick for a week then Miss Morgan had to have surgery to fix a hernia and have her teeth cleaned….traumatic for these tiny furbabies…so I’ve been in the “mother hen” mode lately and not taken the time to blog.
Keep us updated,
Stephanie ♥

Feel better soon! I know several people who have had their gall bladder out – in and out in one day – back to regular routine within a few days!.. you just have to take it easy. So if this is what you must do, it isn’t a big deal.
Julia says
Oh Claudia! I’m so sorry, but happy that you found out what was causing your pain and vomiting. I’m glad the drs. were able to take care of this! I have friends who have had their gall bladders out. The procedure they use now isn’t so invasive. I hope your diet changes work, though!!! I’ve missed you. I haven’t been blogging much lately.

Hi Claudia, I was afraid we were going to hear some bad news as I have been over here a few times without seeing a new post–very unusual for you. If this will give you any comfort, I will tell you that my mom had her gall bladder out several years ago after being sick for so long, and she felt, and continues to feel, so much better. But maybe you can recover without surgery! And if you are up to it, my lab Nellie has taken over my blog again and she may entertain you and the pups (you know she has a crush on Riley). Hope you feel better soon! Linda

Sending best wishes your way.
Hope next time you feel like posting we will find you much better.

Hi Claudia! I am sorry that you were in such pain, but I am glad that the stone blocking the duct was removed. I have heard that drinking lots of water and adding more vitamin C to your diet helps stones from forming. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
