I was leafing through the new Country Living and the decorating theme was white. I admit to a fascination with that style of decorating – the way many bloggers/decorators use white and cream and how lovely those rooms can look. And I have white and cream in my home: my kitchen table, a hutch, an armoire, some side tables and my wicker chair. I love the way white and cream brighten our rooms.
But my friends, I love color. I have to have it around me. Yellow, red, aqua, green – they are everywhere in my home. In the kitchen:
The living room:
The den:
The bedroom:
On the walls of the upstairs bathroom:
In the studio:
As I look outside at a sea of white – we’re in the middle of another major snow event – I know more than ever that I need color.
Just as our red shed stands out against the snow covered landscape, my creamy white walls are the backdrop for pops of color everywhere – some of it subtle, some of it deep and rich. All of it a necessity.
What are your favorite colors?
Kim says
I love color too- LOVE it! I admire the all white and cream houses, but I could never live in it either. My favorites are orange, red, yellows, greens- but I really don’t think there is a color I don’t like. I love the mixtures of colors in your home Claudia ♥
Julia says
Me too! I do have cream colored furniture in one room, and I really need to add some color in there, but we almost never use that room. We are thinking of doing some rearranging of rooms. If we do, that will be a priority.
My favorite color combination is green, purple, and yellow! I like other colors, too, but these are my FAVORITES. When you come into my kitchen, which is where most people enter our house, the first thing you notice are the green walls with the purple, white, and a bit of yellow in the painted border that I added.
It’s good to see that Kim is one of your faithful followers. It is funny how in this cyber world people become connected.

I am with you. I keep trying the white thing I see everywhere because it looks so pretty and calm, but I just love red and pink and green and blue and orange… Guess the white thing will never be my thing.

I am totally with you. I admire the white theme and often wish I had the discipline to stick with it, but I love color too much. In fact, things that are multi-colored tickle my fancy the most. A big bowl of different colored glass ball ornaments — love it! The oddball, goes-with-nothing colored chair — must have it! I recently came across the kitchen set of my dreams — each chair painted a different pastel color, love it! When I describe it to most people, they seem to conclude that I live in a circus tent or an Easter egg, but I don’t care — I love color.

Hi Claudia, I love color too! I know i have a lot of white, but i still love color. Yours looks beautiful.

It’s the same here for me, I decorated my diningroom last year wit only whites and a few greys. But after one month I started to add color to the room. I can’t live without color. hi,hi.

I have to say I just love blue, cobalt blue is one of my favorites. One of the first things I ever got years ago was a set of Blue Willow dishes that I bought at the “dime store’. I’ve gotten quite fond here lately of what I colors of the sea, the Caribbean to be exact and yellow i just love yellow. I too, like you have a combination of colors in my home. I think that really makes a place a real home.

I used to be all black/white/neutrals but as I get older I really want color, and so I’ve been decorating around here with more reds, creams, patterns.
Love all your spaces around the house – and the red shed in snow.
Karen says
My favorite rooms in my house are those I’ve painted butter yellow. I should have painted the whole house that color. I have a touch of red in every room. It adds interest. I use white — for bedspreads, sofa covers — just to make the colors pop! Yes, I love color, too.

I love this post, Claudia! While I love white and cream, they often serve as backdrops highlighting the colorful accents and pieces that I love to use! I lean towards greens, reds, and yellows…warm and cozy colors…

Add me to the list of COLOR lovers! Don’t get me wrong, I think the “all-white” themed rooms are gorgeous, it’s just not very practical for me and I just love color too much. My FAVS have always been yellows and pinks and turquoise with a few punches of red. By the way, I LOVE that pink hobnail vase of yours! Have a wonderful day, xxoo Nan

Your home looks very beautiful! I had always been a neutral fan most of my life and 4 years ago I went outside of my box and painted walls with alot of color, yellow, green, red, cherry cola pink, but did the master a coffee brown with the master bath an almond beige and now after 4 years the only area’s I still love are the nuetral area’s but I admire color I just change my mind too quickly……I am that way with clothes, the grey, black, white brown and tan are what I wear the most……I drooled over the latest all white’s but the Romantic country home had a brown/beige pallet with some red touches that I also love.

I love your home and all your colors. I think that I prefer the soft colors such as pinks, sage greens, creams and yellows. I like touches of it throughout me home although the basic color are mostly white and cream.

I too, love the creams and whites that we see so beautifully shown on blogs. But I am so drawn to color, that I don’t think I could commit to it.
My favorite colors are similar to yours. Blues are my favorite, oddly enough though, I do not have much blue in my home. In my art it is everywhere.
Your home looks so warm and inviting. Your crockery colors are gorgeous as well.
Hugs,
Terri

I love the colors of your home. That last photograph could easily be a painting or greeting card, or framed on your wall. Beautiful!
In the suffocating heat of summer, I long for all white rooms. In winter, I welcome color.

Okay, this is my second comment to your post….
4 Years ago I was very influenced by a mediterranean style, I have green/gold/mediterranean sun/chocolate brown etc in my home and yes I have been drooling over the whites and grays so much so that I made my sewing room grey with very parisian flavor. After reading your post and thinking and looking at my inspirations and remembering why I loved the house and why I remodelled in the way that I did inspired me to well
“Leave things alone!”
So this morning I opened all the blinds, started cleaning and dusting and remembered why I loved my little spot in the world color and all! I will add a few pieces of painted white furniture to the rustic decor that I have but the colors stay!
Thank you for inspiring me to enjoy it the way that it is!!

Love everything in your cozy cottage home………almost makes me want to start adding back some color but you know how I’ve been gradually edging toward the Nordic/French style……….agreeably a bit cold looking at this time of year, but I do love it. Just glad DH never allowed me to paint all our woodwork white, the natural wood shades are what keep my rooms warmer looking with so much white/grey/natural color.
Now dear one, please, please tell me about your beautiful wood floors, they looks gorgeous. Are they new or the original………if new, are they available still and from which company? My hoped for project here is to rip up the carpet downstairs, except master bedroom, and do wide plank hardwood flooring!
Thanks for sharing more pics of your beautiful home, and the garden shed – it’s all perfect.

Oh Claudia, I so agree. I love to look at the beautiful whites and neutrals but I could not live with that. We have color everywhere too. My little cottage is mostly red, blue, green, and yellow with white and natural wood. The only room that edges towards that neutral look (but doesn’t go anywhere near the cliff) is our bedroom.
Your trip to Magnolia Bakery sounds so fun! The bag is gorgeous. I hope you find some relief from the snow soon.
