Anyone need an icicle?
It reached 37 degrees on Monday. I went outside for few minutes and it felt positively balmy. Funny how it’s all relative, right? That’s when I took this photo. Honest to God, for a moment it felt like I’d been freed from captivity.
That’s what the days have been like here. Unbelievably cold. Endless snow. An extremely dry house. (Yes, we have a humidifier. It’s still way too dry.) Both of us feel lethargic, which I suppose is the universal urge to hibernate. And that 37 degree temperature is an anomaly. We’re back to below freezing.
It’s been years since we’ve had a winter like this one.
So I’ve been reading off and on, playing Solitaire on my phone, working on the puzzle (which just might take all winter to complete) and doing the usual chores. We won’t mention the news, except to say that it also consumes a lot of my time.
It’s a surreal world that we’re living in now. Thank goodness for Don, who helps keep me sane. I believe I do the same for him. Thank goodness for “Best in Show,” which we watched the other night in tribute to the late, superbly great Catherine O’Hara. It still makes us laugh and we’ve probably seen it 10 times. Thank goodness for moments when we allow ourselves to be silly and giggle. Thank goodness for Don’s music, his voice, his gift. Thank goodness for “Slow Living” videos on YouTube, which I now am addicted to. Also videos about living off-grid in Alaska. Also old SCTV episodes. Seek out the funny, the things that, for a moment, take you away from the horrors we’re living through. Or the peaceful, like those “slow living” videos.
I hope you’re all hanging in there.
Stay safe.
Happy Wednesday.

Stunning picture! Look at that blue sky! Lots of hygee going on in your house. Stay cozy. Stay warm. Stay sane. Hugs, Elaine
Thanks so much, Elaine.
Stay safe.
I actually got out for a bit of a walk yesterday as the sun was shining and the temp was upper 20s. Fresh air felt good even if it was a bit chilly.
“Look for joy” I read somewhere, It’s difficult to do these days but necessary to keep us going.
Stay safe!
Yes, very true, Ellen.
Stay safe.
I do know what you are going through right now…and that feeling of never-ending hibernation. Yes…comedies do help. Anything really, to take you out of your present circumstances. There was one day…one of our grocery stores was having a plant sale. So…I had to go, even though it was frigid out, Found a plant I didn’t have for a very reasonable price, and Jim picked me up at the door so the plant wouldn’t freeze. Distraction…yes. Mission accomplished. I will have to check out the Slow Living videos you mentioned….never heard of them before.
We all have to hang in there right now…but I believe things will change. I do have hope. Hope is all I have. Enjoy your day! ;)
I do, too. I think things are coming to a head and it’s the beginning of the end.
Enjoy your new plant, Donnamae.
Stay safe.

kathy
Have fun with all of that, Kathy!
Stay safe.
Sorry to hear that you’re still experiencing the extremely cold weather. Hope it thaws soon.
Yes, it’s very sad to learn that Catherine O’Hara has suddenly passed away. Wonderful performer.
Tomorrow, it’s the funeral of my dear friend who was also 71 and suddenly passed away.
As a group, my other library friends are all in a state of shock, we have been friends for over 50 years. I had a significant birthday meal a couple of days before Christmas and she was absolutely fine, in fact probably the healthiest of us.
We chatted on my actual birthday in January and less than a week later, after a short illness, she was gone.
Take care.
I’m so sorry, Dee Dee. How absolutely devastating for you and your friends.
Stay safe.
Have you heard about Martijn Doolaard – he’s rebuilding stone building in the Italian Alps – 4 years now – meditative to the nth degree. YouTube
No, I haven’t heard about it, but I’ll be sure to look for him, Gail. Thanks so much!
Stay safe.
37? In my dreams! I’m still avoiding outside as much as possible. So glad you were able to escape. No problems being in, though. Time to really clean my office/studio (it hasn’t been used as a studio in eons!), read, watch, write. I’ll be starting an art project this weekend and a puzzle too.
Mostly watching Josh and Jase reels on youtube and FB. Have you heard of them? Two Brits who decided to come to America, this time to Michigan where they had never been. Can you imagine coming to Michigan for the first time this winter? It’s pretty hysterical — they do all sorts of things — drink Vernors, go to Jet’s Pizza, visit all sorts of spots including Marquette, Mackinac, Saugatuck, Ford Field, a Red Wings game and give their impressions. Their take on going over the Mackinac Bridge is priceless!
Oh, don’t worry, we’re getting 20 – 40 below zero wind chills and temps in the single digits this weekend.
I miss Vernors!
Stay safe. Jeanie.
What a lovely post, Claudia. Yes, thank goodness for all of those things and for your charming blog as well!
Thank you so much, Jenny!
