In the Gutter

October 1, 2010 at 10:16 am by Claudia

(taken from my perch on the ladder)

Too many leaves in gutter + torrential rains = leak in kitchen. Yes, that’s what we dealt with yesterday. I’m sure you’ve read that the East Coast has been getting heavy, heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Yesterday, I looked up to see water dripping down the wall near our stove. Uh oh. We put on our grubby clothes, grabbed the ladder and up to the roof went husband. At first we thought it might be the roof itself. But we soon discovered that the gutter was completely backed up and the water had nowhere to go but into the house. Luckily, as soon as we cleared it, water flowed freely down into our rain barrel. The gutters around the porch were full as well, even though the leaves have only been falling for about 10 days.

(again, taken from my precarious perch on the ladder)

So we cleared those. Lesson learned: when rain is predicted and leaves are falling, check gutters. We love our trees, but we pay a price for their close proximity to the house. Overnight, we had more heavy rain and I’m happy to report the kitchen stayed dry. Oh, the adventures of home ownership!

In the midst of all this, my rose bush presented us with a surprise:

I thought the bloom period had long ended, but perhaps because of our recent warm weather, there are several buds ready to open. It’s going to get cold over the weekend so I am urging my little buds to open today.

    Claudia,

How lucky you were home!!! And knew what to do. Truly a beautiful rose.

We have a wind advisory now with possible heavy rains. We are trying to get everything done for the weekend in case we lose power.

Love the late blooming rose… it has such great color!

We used to get a build up of leaves in our gutters in Maryland where our property was loaded with trees up close to the house… very tall trees. Here in Virginia our trees are all away from the house which is great in the fall, but would sure love some of that shade in the summertime which we don’t get. It’s a trade-off.

Thank you for your visit and comment! It was so much fun to see Marydon and Harold “in person”! Great pictures you posted, I know the clogged eaves all too well! Hubby held the ladder so I could clean them out with a rubber glove on-ha! He cannot do anything like this any longer. We had 10 inches of rain and some flooding on frontage roads in the area but today the sun is shining and it is beautiful once more. Luv n hugs, Kerrie

Claudia, please don’t mention raking leaves. I just finished raking most of the leaves that fell from my fig tree….That’s the only downside of figs. The figs are great, but the leaves are huge. So glad that the rain didn’t do more damage to your kitchen. Nice late bloom.

Claudia, I am so glad the two of you could fix the problem. I shudder to think of you up there taking photos! The intrepid blogger. Every time I rake it looks like I did nothing the next weekend. But it is exercise. Have a lovely weekend♥olive

Yuck – that gutter work brings back some memories…leaves haven’t turned here yet let alone fallen. Summer has just gotten to the PNW I think. No rain either but that’s a given sooner or later. Happy October!

We got quite a bit of rain, too, but we were desperate for it. Hopefully now my grass seed will germinate and grow.

Our roses are blooming with the cooler days, rain and the break from the heat.

You be careful up on that ladder.♥

What a relief to hear that the leak was due to a clogged gutter. We just put on a new roof a couple of years ago and it sure is pricey! The best part of the chore was being greeted by that sweet and lovely rose! Stay dry and have a lovely weekend with your hubby and the dogs!!

    Lots of love,

Thank goodness it wasn’t the actual roof that was leaking!
We’ve just had the rainiest winter ever here in NZ and we’re very happy to be saying goodbye to it…I’m surprised there’s any rain left in the world!

It’s always something, isn’t it? Houses are a lot of work! So glad it was the gutters and not the roof. Much easier to fix! Hope you get the inside dried out and back to normal soon!

I found myself unable to pass the picture of the beautiful leaves on the roof. I have to drive up in the canyons in November to see even a tiny bit of that kind of color. I would volunteer to come rake your leaves just to enjoy it… ‘cept the cost to get there is prohibitive….’sigh’

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
