Here I was, ready to share a shot of the living room with you, a pretty view of the sunlight pouring into the room…and then I saw a pair of Don’s socks on the red chair.
Real life, my friends, real life.
This will be a short one, as I have to get going and run lots of errands today. I finished the script yesterday and now everything is about doing laundry, buying what I need, gathering all the bits and bobs that I need for my five weeks in Hartford.
Good news: I don’t have to live in the hotel for the first week and then move everything over to the apartments on my day off. I will be in an apartment from the start. Yay! One less hassle, especially since I’m still being careful with my ankle. The less hauling things around, the better.
Though I hate the thought of leaving my family, I find myself moving into my efficient ‘let’s do it’ mode, something I always do when I have to leave town. It’s the only way I can manage the separation and the tasks that have to be done.
Once again, I’ll take along a quilt for the bed and a quilt to hang on the wall and some pieces of pottery. I’ll buy fresh flowers and put them in a pretty vase and do everything I can to make my little apartment my own. And I’m buying a small humidifier, because those apartments get really dry in the winter.
More later – have to get a move on!
Happy Friday.

Gosh I hate getting ready to leave my home nest. I know this is necessary for you to work, bittersweet. Don’t forget to take some pictures of Scout the sweet girl. May all your errands get done quickly my friend.
Claudia says
I’m going to take a photo of the three of us. Thanks, Cindy!
Donnamae says
Sounds like a busy day and weekend ahead of you! Socks have a life of their own, don’tcha know! ;)
Claudia says
They sure do!
Janet in Rochester says
Claudia, before you buy a humidifier, try just setting out bowls of water. A couple of Winters ago I began to have nosebleeds every day, sometimes several in one day, and my doctor’s first suggestion was this low-tech, low-$$ remedy. And it worked like a charm! Within 24 hours of the bowls being out, the nosebleeds stopped and have never returned. Every 2 weeks or so I top them off [they’re down about ½ way by then]. My apartment is just under 1000 square feet so I keep a serving bowl from my china pattern on my bedside table, and a plain stainless steel bowl in the dining room on the floor behind my potted ficus tree. When I want the cozy factor too, I put a small saucepan on a VERY low simmer on the stove with water and lemon, orange and/or grapefruit peels in it. But only when I’m working nearby in the dining room and there to add water when needed! PS – that citrus scent in the air is heavenly in the Winter too. In the Summer I add lavender essential oil, and in the Fall, a little apple cider.
Claudia says
I have bowls of water set out here, and they help but it’s still dry. I’ve also done the water on the stove thing. I do it here, and I’ve done it in Hartford. But these apartments are beyond dry. You wouldn’t believe how dry they are. A humidifier is a necessity if you’re going to stay for any length of time!
Wendy TC says
You’ll get everything done quickly and efficiently, Claudia. Save some downtime to re-center, and to enjoy your family before you leave.
Claudia says
Oh, I will, Wendy.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I imagine you will be in high gear until you leave. That is great news that you don’t have to move in 2x!! You always manage to make your little apt. a true home in only a few days. And I am really looking forward to your usual trip(s) to the library there!
Claudia says
Me too! I might not have time the first week, which promises to be full of long days, but I’ll get there the next week.
Melanie says
Five weeks is a long time to be away from home; I can understand why you’re nervous about leaving. How far away is Hartford from your home…would Don be able to sneak in some visits, or no because of Scout? Good to hear you get to stay in one place this time and not have to move around.
Claudia says
It’s two hours away. Too long for a short visit from Don. But I’ll have the other car and when I can grab a day or so and come home, I’ll will. Of course, I don’t want to be away from Don, but with Scout as fragile as she is, I really want to get back and check on her.
Dawn says
So glad the apartment will be ready for you and no move will be required. Be mindful of your ankle, you don’t need a set back :)
Claudia says
I will. I have an ankle brace that I’ll probably wear on ‘move-in’ day.
Betsy says
I can only begin to understand how you must feel about being gone for five weeks Claudia. When I have to leave my Chloe for just a week, even when it’s vacation, it always bothers me. We started running a humidifier in our bedroom the last few weeks. The air is just so dry with all of the snow. I hope you get everything you need done today. My thoughts are with you.
Blessings, Betsy
Claudia says
I got a fair amount done, but still have more to do! But crossing things off my list feels good.
Vicki says
Clever and comforting to take a few things from home to make yourself feel ‘personalized’ in an impersonal space! How do you hang the quilt on the wall as a temporary thing?
Claudia says
I always take things to make my temporary lodgings a home. And the answer to your question is small push pins.
Susan says
I nearly choked on an orange slice when I read your first paragraph :-) Guys just don’t notice the socks, etc do they? But we love them anyways and can’t imagine our lives without them. I am glad you are taking two of your quilts. Quilts and fresh flowers add so much happiness to any space. I’ll keep Scout in my prayers too.
Big Texas Hugs,
Susan and Bentley
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Susan. I worry about her these days and don’t like the fact that I won’t be here to watch over her. Don will do a great job, but I’m her mom! I know you know what I mean.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I hate to see you go away again for so long…you are so much happier in your Home Sweet Home…Not having to move twice should help some…They took lots of blood at the hospital…they have to do a blood culture and I will know the results in three weeks…
Claudia says
I’m crossing my fingers for you, Nancy. Even better, prayers are being said!
Patricia says
5 weeks?!?! I know it must be hard to leave. Making the best of a situation is how we manage. So making the apartment homey helps. It will be good to be working! Will Wayfrum Holmes be a traveling companion this time?
Claudia says
He might be, Pat. I’m thinking about it!
Tammy says
Someone asked to see pictures of my living room the other day and I found myself moving around some of my husband’s stuff that he leaves laying about so that I could get some decent shots. Real life is what it’s all about. No show home stuff going on. I do love how you make your away space homey by taking personal things with you. All the best, Tammy
Claudia says
Thank you, Tammy. I’ll do my best to make it look cosy!
Janine says
Good morning Claudia love your real photo! I am looking forward to your work and apartment for the next few weeks. I love that Don calls it your “That girl” role. I have just finished watching a few episodes and thought of you! Safe travels and look after your ankle x
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Janine! I’m starting to gather things together and pack as much up as I can before tomorrow morning.
